Friends Church Calgary Weekly Message

Speakers: Jeff Jarvis One Sunday, a while back, I shared the story of Nicholas Winton, the man responsible for saving the lives of 669 children from the horrors of the holocaust. I was scrolling on social media one day and came across a clip of Nicholas, who, many years later, was thanked by a large group of now adults whom he had saved. I still remember watching the clip of this moment and being so emotionally moved and inspired. At the time, I had no idea what a deeply spiritual moment, simply observing gratitude being expressed, could create. Though gratitude is a familiar concept, I don’t know how many realize all the benefits behind this spiritual practice. Sadly, it can be complicated for some who have grown up in religious traditions where it was mostly focused on a particular conception of God. This Sunday I want to untangle it from some of that and share some keys to developing a transformative practice of gratitude. Invite a friend and join us this Sunday in the Spiritual Gym. Speakers: Vince Klassen & Gerry Smiley It’s easy to talk about prayer and conceptions of God from a place of health, but what about when you're on the edge of death? When illness is relentless and suffering reshapes everything? This week, we’re stepping beyond the abstract to talk with Gerry, a longtime member of our community who survived a double lung transplant—one of the most invasive surgeries possible. Now, he lives with a new battle: a suppressed immune system, constant cancer risks, rejection threats, and an ever-present hospital stays looming. How does someone like Gerry wrestle with prayer? How has his conception of God evolved through it all? Join us for an insightful, honest, and—knowing Gerry—hilarious conversation about faith where it matters most. See you at the Spiritual Gym. Speaker: Vince Klassen As we expand our understanding of the word prayer , we begin to see it not just as a quiet wish or whispered plea to a superbeing up in the sky, but also as the expression of our deepest hopes, and with that realization comes a profoundly spiritual question: if we truly long for something, must we also take part in bringing it to life? Last week, Jeff helped us see how self-realization and working through our struggles can become a type of prayer—personal growth and healing can be spiritual acts. In this way, self-help isn’t separate from prayer ; it can be a type of prayer. This week, we’re taking that idea even further—out of our minds and into our lives. Into our homes. Into the way we spend our time, our energy, our resources. Because maybe prayer isn’t just something we think —maybe it’s something we do . Maybe it’s in our hands and feet, in the way we move through the world. Maybe prayer is how we live . Speakers: Jeff Jarvis Prayer is often seen as simply making requests to a higher power in the hope that they’ll intervene on our behalf. Last week, we challenged this view and uncovered some of its complexities. But what if prayer is so much more? What if it’s a transformative practice that changes us—empowering us to become the answers to those very prayers? This week, we’ll dive deeper, expanding our understanding of prayer and exploring how it connects to the profound stillness of contemplative space. Bring a friend and join us this Sunday for part two of Talking to the Sky . Let’s journey together into a deeper conversation. Speakers: Vince Klassen This week, we embark on a profound exploration of prayer—a practice that, for many, intertwines deeply with their understanding of God, the existence of suffering, the pursuit of healing, and countless other spiritual ideas. These are ideas that, when truly grasped, become pivotal in shaping how we engage with and navigate our spiritual journeys in everyday life. Our journey begins by unpacking the very definition of prayer, opening the door to a larger and more meaningful conversation about its role in our lives. This week’s discussion is designed to go beyond the surface, diving deeply into our personal experiences of the world. Together, we’ll begin mapping pathways to navigate these experiences—especially for those of us who Don’t Fit Church. This is an invitation to reimagine prayer in a way that resonates, connects, and empowers. Speakers: Jeff Jarvis & Bryce Ever had a question for one of our pastors but didn’t know how to ask it? Or maybe you were too scared because, let’s face it, claiming it’s “for a friend ” never fools anyone. We’ve all been there. Hi, I’m Bryce—comedy stage name: Bad Boy with a Heart of Gold—and I’m hijacking the mic (and the pastors) for two Sundays this January. That’s right, I’m grilling them with YOUR toughest, weirdest, and most awkward questions. No softballs. No pat answers. I’m going to dig deep, make them sweat, and maybe even squirm a little—all to get you the honest answers you’ve been searching for. Got a burning question? Submit it anonymously at Pastors on the Hotseat Anonymous Questions Form ( CLICK HERE ) . Don’t worry, the pastors won’t know it came from you. Think of me as the person who will make sure your questions get into the spotlight. Nothing’s off-limits. Theology? Life? Spirituality?—send it my way. Let’s see how our fearless pastors handle the Hotseat. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this. It’s going to be equal parts hilarious, deep, and maybe just a little uncomfortable (for them). Speaker: Jeff Jarvis If you’re growing, you’re changing. It’s true. Especially with the spiritual journey. Certain priorities, beliefs, perspectives, attitudes, that once served us well can begin to feel constraining – like they no longer fit who we’re becoming. Which is exciting because it shows progress – like stepping on the scale and watching our weight drop. However, these changes can create new challenges. It can be difficult for those in our lives, especially those who aren’t shifting with us. It can also bring difficult decisions for ourselves that we hadn’t anticipated. We’re going to explore some of the realities of growth and change this weekend. Invite a friend and join us in the gym this Sunday. Speaker: Jeff Jarvis The ability to learn information and recall it on demand is a coveted skill, rewarded in almost every academic and vocational setting. It can make school a breeze and impress almost anyone. But in the spiritual world, it’s not so much about what you know. In spirituality, one’s ability to learn knowledge is only made valuable when combined with another critical skill set. In fact, without this other skill set, experiencing ninja-level spirituality becomes almost impossible. This Sunday, we’re going to explore “Integration”. It is, a rguably, one of the most useful and needed practices for the spiritual journey. To donate to this podcast and support the making of more of these please visit www.friendschurch.ca/donate…

Friends Church Calgary Weekly Message

Speaker: Trevor Dreher We’re in the middle of our ‘Spiritual Ninja’ series, where we’re sharing the skillsets of ‘Spiritual Ninjas’ so that we can all be better in our own everyday life. As we really enter into the Christmas season (this Sunday is December 1st already!), how can we be our best selves this holiday season? The Christmas season is typically very busy (frantic, downright crazy) for many people. That may make it hard to be at our best, ironically, just when we’re interacting with so many people we care about. And this week is kinda funny because we’re going to be talking a lot about the importance of ‘I’. As the Mike Tyson quote alludes, the person that may get forgotten about this holiday season is you – ‘I’. What can we do to ensure everyone has a better holiday season, you included? Join us this week as we help get your – ‘I’ – tuned up and ready for the holidays. To donate to this podcast and support the making of more of these please visit www.friendschurch.ca/donate…

Speaker: Vince Klassen We live in a world that often feels like it’s spiraling into chaos. Wars rage on every level—between nations, within our families, and even inside ourselves. These battles cost us dearly, leaving wounds that ripple out to everyone around us. But what if there’s another way? What if there’s a spiritual practice—a posture, a set of skills—that could serve as The Antidote to War ? A way to break free from the cycle of hurt feelings, endless stewing, and the years lost to unresolved conflict and grudges? This week at the Spiritual Gym, Sensei James is showing us how to become Spiritual Ninjas. These are people who let their spirituality shape their every move, navigating life with grace, clarity, and a remarkable ability to avoid war altogether. If you’re feeling the weight of conflict in your life—or you know someone who is—this is your chance to learn tools that can transform how you approach every relationship, including the one with yourself. Come as you are, and invite a friend . Peace begins with us. To donate to this podcast and support the making of more of these please visit www.friendschurch.ca/donate…
