AI and digital expert Suchi Srinivasan and fintech practice leader Kamila Rakhimova from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) talk to the women at the vanguard of business, digital, and technology. They’re digging into how these powerhouse leaders got where they are—everything from the joy of projects gone right to the realities of family responsibilities. And crucially, asking: what was that moment you knew you weren't merely getting there...you had arrived? That's when you know you're in your element.

Episode #27 How Do I Keep My Sugar Cookies from Spreading? Supplies That Help Keep My Sugar Cookies from Spreading: (contains affiliate links) Food Scale- I don’t see the exact food scale I have. I bought it a few years back and I’m sure the design has changed, but I did find one at Walmart and one on Amazon that looks a lot like mine. They’d work great for weighing your baking supplies. The one at Walmart is under $20 and the one on Amazon is under $30. Like I said in the podcast, I don’t want you to use these links to buy them unless you want to. I wanted to use the links so you’ll have an idea of what I use. My suggestion is to find a food scale that’s affordable, measures in grams, kilograms, ounces, and pounds and looks like it would be easy to clean because we all know how flour and powder sugar can make your kitchen surfaces look as if it snowed indoors. Food Scale at Walmart- This looks almost identical to the food scale I use except the top piece of glass on this one is round and mine is square. Food Scale at Amazon Flexible Cutting Mats Fondant Smoother Oven Thermometer FAQ Do you have questions about sugar cookies spreading? Let me see if I can help a little. There’s nothing worse than making cookie dough, cutting out your cute little shapes, placing them on a cookie sheet and sticking them in the oven only to remove a baking sheet full of cookies that have spread so much you can’t tell what shapes you baked in the first place. It’s like your heart kind of sinks and melts like those cookies did while they were in the oven. I have a few tips that might help you prevent that from happening. Here are some questions I get asked a lot. How do I keep my sugar cookies from spreading when they bake? Good question! There are several things that can cause your cookies to spread and we’ll cover as many as we can today. When I first started baking I had an issue with baking powder. It made my cookies spread to almost twice the size of the cutter that was used. Remember when I said I’m a heavy-handed scooper of flour? I guess I have an issue with teaspoons as well. I decided to cut the amount in my recipe in half and it worked. Sometimes I don’t use baking powder at all and that works as well. If you need a recipe you might want to try my Sugar Cookie Recipe. It only calls for 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder because I already cut the amount in half for you. See if that helps keep you cookies stay closer to the size of the cookie cutter you used to cut them out. Don’t over mix your cookie dough when you make it. Cream the butter and sugar for a couple of minutes and then add the rest of the ingredients. Over mixing the dough will add air into it and cause the dough to collapse and get air bubbles when it bakes. Just mix the dough as long as you need to get the ingredients mixed. The amount of flour you add to your cookie dough when you’re making it will determine how your cookies turn out. It’s easy to add too much flour if you’re a heavy-handed scooper like me. A great way to handle this is by using a food scale because it will help you use the correct amount of flour and sugar. We’ll talk more about this later because this is one tool I truly need as a baker. I measure my flour, sugar, and powdered sugar and it really helps me get the results I’m looking for! If you sprinkle a lot of flour on the surface where you roll out your cookie dough, the dough will pick up that flour and it can cause your cookies to become dry and crumbly. That’s why I love using the Flexible Plastic Cutting Board Mats because they don’t require a lot of flour. Is your oven temperature correct? If your cookies spread in the oven it may mean your oven is too cool. This will cause the butter in your cookies to melt instead of letting your cookies bake the way they should. An inexpensive oven thermometer can help you know what the exact temperate of your oven is. One baker told me her oven was twenty-five degrees cooler then she set temperature. Once she adjusted the heat she learned how to bake perfectly shaped sugar cookies. I never imagined an oven would be that many degrees off, and the thermometer helped her realize that. Be sure your baking sheets are not warm because your dough will start cooking immediately. Keep your baking sheets room temperature or out of the freezer. We’ll talk more about that in a minute. Speaking of baking sheets don’t grease them. Grease will tell your cookies it’s okay to spread all over the pan! Guess what cookies? It’s not okay to spread all over the pan! Use parchment paper or a Silpat while baking. Once you cut out your cookie shapes you can re-roll your cookie dough. I don’t roll mine over three times because the more you work your dough, the more it will spread when you bake it. I made a post on How Many Times Can You Re-Roll Your Cookie Dough if you’d like to check it out. Help! My Cookie Dough is Sticky! I can think of two things that can cause cookie dough to be sticky. Let’s talk about them for a minute. I think your cookie dough needs to be a little cooler so place it in the fridge for a few minutes. Then try to re-roll it and I think you’ll see a difference. I think the amount of flour that was added might be off. This is why a food scale is very important to me. Ever since I bought my scale my cookie dough is perfect. So is my royal icing because I weigh my powdered sugar every single time I make royal icing. The food scale was less than $20 at Wal-Mart and less than $30 on Amazon and you can find the links in the supply list. It’s not a big investment, but a big deal to the way my cookies turn out. Another thing I do with my cookies is to place the cutout cookie dough in the freezer before I bake the cookies. I don’t set a time or anything to bake them but the time is usually anywhere from five to fifteen minutes. Chilling the dough really helps my cookies hold their shape while they bake. There are my top 10 tips to help prevent your sugar cookies from spreading. I hope you find something in there that will help your cookies hold their cute cookie cutter shape! It works for me and I hope you find something that works for you! Another thing that might be off is your dough may be too warm. This is another reason to put the butter on the counter one hour before you make your cookie dough. The dough won’t be sticky as you’re trying to roll it out. If it’s sticky place it in the refrigerator for about ten minutes and then roll it out. Hopefully, that’ll work. If the butter is too cold it won’t mix well because your cookies will be denser, and they probably won’t spread enough in the pan when they bake. Cool butter will work but cold butter won’t make pretty cookies. Another thing that works for me is chilling my cookie dough before I bake it. I’m no professional but baking chilled cookie dough helps the cookies hold their shape. Here’s how my process works: You can also watch a video on Just Flip That Sugar Cooke Dough if you want to see how I flip that mat after the dough gets cold and I’m ready to cut out the cookie shapes. Make your cookie dough and divide it into two or three dough balls. Place it on two Flexible Cutting Mats. Cover it with plastic wrap and roll it out. Chill on the mat in the freezer for 10-15 minutes Take it out and remove the plastic wrap from the top and lay it back on the surface of the dough. Flip the mat over and carefully remove the Flexible Cutting Mat from the back of the dough. Lay the mat back on the dough and turn it right side up with the dough on top. Remove the plastic wrap and cut out your cookie shapes. If your dough is frozen (sometimes things happen and we leave the dough in the freezer a little longer then we planned) let it warm up slightly because if you cut frozen dough it will form a crack and break. Or when you try to remove it from the cutter it could break. So you don’t want frozen dough, you just want it chilled so it will cut well. As I mentioned before, place the cookie shapes on a baking sheet that’s lined with parchment paper or a Silpat. Since the dough is so cold you won’t mess up the shape of your cookies by picking them up and placing them on the baking sheet. Once you get a baking sheet full (be sure to spread them out a little because they’ll rise and spread a little as they’re supposed to do) place the baking sheet back in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to get the cookies really cold. Then bake at 375 degrees for about 8 minutes. Your baking time might be a little different than mine so watch your cookies the first few times you bake to find out how long you should bake them. When you remove them from the oven and they’re nice and hot, use the fondant smoother to flatten the tops. Be careful and don’t push down hard because they could stick the fondant smoother and move as you move your hand, Gently press the surface and watch the magic happen. Nice flat beautifully shaped sugar cookies. Let them cool completely before you decorate them. I’ll also make a post and listed these steps in an FAQ under Bearfoot Basics. It has a PDF you can print out and hang on the fridge. You may not use all the steps but like I said before, maybe there’s a step or two that will help your cookies hold their shape as they bake. Please let me know if you have any questions about your sugar cookies spreading. Bear hugs,…
Are you ready for a great podcast? I hope so because we’re going to Bake at 350 today with Bridget Edwards! I’m so excited to share this podcast with you guys. Bridget Edwards is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. As you’re listening to the podcast you’ll hear about the first time I saw her in person. She was sweet, graceful, elegant and extremely beautiful. I was scared to death to meet her, but when I did, she was kind and friendly. It’s something I’ll never forget. A few years ago Karen Summers asked me to be an instructor at Cookie Con. I asked a few blogger and cookie decorators for a photo of the first cookies they made and a photo of a cookie they’d recently made. This “ Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” was the recent photo that Bridget shared with me. It’s one of my favorite cookies ever. The yellow and red look amazing and the cherries she’s piped look perfect. They look real. It looks like you could reach into the photo, pick up a cookie, and eat it! These are an awesome set of cookies and I’m very grateful she shared the photos with everyone at Cookie Con. If you want to see the photo of the first cookies she made, you can see them on YouTube in the ‘ Bearfoot Basics Sugar Cookies 101 Part 3 ‘ video. It’s a long video so if you want to skip to the part that shows Bridget’s cookies, move the video slider to 35:39 minutes to see them. It’s hard to believe they’re her first because of the pretty writing on them. When looking on the internet I see decorators using several things that Bridget taught us. The one I use most often is her coffee filter tip, If you haven’t seen it you can find it here at her Coffee Filter tutorial she made back in 2008. It’s a priceless decorating tip! If you search her blog at Bake at 350, you’ll find lots of great tips and tricks that will help you decorate cookies. Bridget also shares wonderful recipes and Trader Joe’s tips. I think you need to head on over and search her site and look at her social media links below. You’ll see amazing cookies, delicious recipes, and tips you’ll use every time you decorate cookies. Episode #25 Sweet Dani B Life is Sweet with Dani Fiori (Photo Courtesy of The Martha Stewart Show) What a happy photo with Dani, Martha and the adorable decorated sugar cookies. I love the candy and sprinkles Dani uses to make them. The display with the jars is a very smart way to display holiday cookies, The only problem I have with this display is that everyone will eat the cookies before the holiday arrives. I think I’ll take the snowman and gingerbread man with the tree or Santa and the reindeer. I have an idea, let’s all share all the cookies! (Photo Courtesy of Martha Stewart Living) Here it is! The Martha Stewart Holiday Cutters is a fun set of cookie cutters. I love how Dani decorated them. Look at that cute little Santa cookie with his friends the deer, snowman, and partridge in a pear tree. This set of cookies is adorable! I love the way Dani decorated them. When you look at each cookie you can tell they’re decorated by Sweet Dani B. The way she adds sprinkles and candy to each cookie is her signature design. It’s hard to find these cookie cutters but if you want the Santa, Dani has decorated one that’s similar. You can find Santa with Bag Cookie Cutter at Copper Gifts . She also has a Mrs. Clause Cookie Cutter . She has a lot of cookie cutters she’s designed at CopperGifts.com. I purchased her Yeti cutter back in September and I’m looking forward to decorating him soon. There he is! That little Santa Cookie-The One That Started it All for me. I remember watching The Martha Stewart Show and seeing Dani decorate those cute little Santa Cookies with those magic little decorating bottles. I had never seen the decorating bottles and I was amazed. As I watched how Dani added each color of royal icing to the cookie and then added sprinkles I was hooked! Dani and Santa touched my heart and changed my career. Thank you, Dani, for showing me how to decorate cookies and start my own cookie journey. Making cookies is a great way to share happiness and cookie love. Dani Fiori started Sweet Dani B Cookie Kitchen and Petite Party Studio about 2 years ago. I’ve enjoyed watching her in her shop online and how she teaches adult and kid workshops to show others how to decorate. Dani knows how to share the cookie love to everyone. Looking at the photos you can see the love Dani puts into her cookies and her shop. She’s made it feel warm and welcoming and a place I’d want to visit every day. The only thing stopping me is the shop is in New York and I’m in East Tennessee. Maybe one day I’ll get to visit, decorate, and share a chocolate chip cookie with her. Oh yeah, did I mention Dani is an Emmy Winner? This girl has serious skills! Here is Dani with her husband Keith at the ribbon cutting ceremony at Sweet Dani B Cookie Kitchen and Petite Party Studio. In the podcast, Dani mentioned that Keith painted and made things for the shop. He painted “Life is Sweet” on the cafe wall and it’s beautiful. What a sweet couple! Dani talked about working as a waitress and at Ralph Lauren during the podcast. That must have been super exciting. I’m glad her career changed and brought her into the cookie world. Her cookies are cute and well designed and full of love. She gave me the tips on how to start decorating which led to The Bearfoot Baker Blog, 100 Animal Cookies Book , The Power of a Cookie, and The Cookie Network. Seeing her on The Martha Stewart Show changed my life and I’m very grateful. Share the Cookie Love with Sweet Dani B. Have you seen The Cookie Architect Rebecca Weld’s cookies? She’s an amazing cookie decorator. I love looking at the different designs she creates. The colors she chooses are perfect for each set of cookies. They’re truly works of art. She’s creative, artistic, and intelligent and it shows in each cookies she decorates. When you wonder where the name Cookie Architect comes from well, it’s simple. She’s an architect with her own firm. Think about it, she designs building and that talent over flows on her cookies. They’re beautiful and one of a kind. I get lost in the fabulous designs and colors. Rebecca is also a mother to two boys and makes cookies to give to friends and family. Even though she’s running her own architect firm and makes cookies for friends and family, sometimes she finds herself making cookies to help raise money for charity. She talks about that in the podcast so you don’t want to miss it. I’ll be honest, her puzzle cookies make my heart happy. Episode #23 I’ve Got This with Melissa Blake I have to admit, I haven’t met Melissa in person. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know who she was until she sent me an email encouraging me after I had my brain tumor removed . She sent me the sweetest email and she told me of her recovery story. I couldn’t stop reading the email. As soon as I read it I sent her an email thanking her and asked if she would be a guest on The Power of a Cookie Podcast. As I read how Melissa had been battling cancer and heard about the surgery and treatment she’d gone through, I was encouraged because her story was guiding me through the things she described. Episode #22 Bouncer the Big Brain Tumor: Episode #22 Bouncer the Big Brain Tumor: Okay, the podcast will tell you several things about how I ended up having brain surgery to have a massive tumor the size of a tennis ball removed from my brain. Let’s just say the last two years I’ve been pretty sick. I did visit my doctor but I ended up leaving his office with prescriptions that I never filled because whatever they were I knew they wouldn’t help. Well, I didn’t see my mom or my mother-in-law on Christmas because I was too sick to sit in the car and ride there. I had been losing weight and couldn’t eat anything. The last week of February I was so sick I thought I was going to die. I’m not joking. I was on the couch and praying Alan would come home from work and help me. When he arrived God gave me the strength to sit up to talk to him. I told him we had to find someone to help me because there was something very, very wrong with me. He immediately got online and called a doctor some people told him about and her staff scheduled me for an appointment on March 4th. They also said we needed to plan on spending an hour with her because she was going to examine me and talk to me about my issues. I honestly have never had a doctor spend an hour with me so I’ll be honest, I didn’t believe it. Guess what? She spent one hour and fifteen minutes with me. I was shocked! And blessed because she asked the questions I wanted to talk about so she could figure out what my body was going through. I have a thyroid issue and I thought that could be the problem but boy was I wrong! My new doctor ordered lab work to check my levels but she also told me she wanted to order an MRI. I’m claustrophobic but I didn’t care. I needed the MRI so her office was going to arrange all the details and call us to let us know when the appointment was. They called and told me that Monday, March 11th at 11: oo I needed to go to Knoxville for the appointment. Perfect. I was finally going to find out why I was so sick. During the MRI the medical team that was running it saw something so they stopped the procedure and told me they needed to add contrast. When the contrast is injected into the body it improves the quality of the MRI images. The contrast is called gadolinium and some people are allergic so I requested they get Alan because I wanted to speak to him before that happened. They found Alan in the lobby and brought him to my room so I could see him. No big deal. I just wanted to see him in case I had a reaction to the contrast so we continued the MRI. I did it! I got through it without having a meltdown. We went home and I got sick again. UGH! Then my new doctor called and told me the results of my lab work. It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t great either. She adjusted my prescription for my thyroid issue and she prescribed vitamins and informed me I needed to start them soon. Alan and I went to a local pharmacy and got them. Thank goodness I felt good enough to go. It was like going to a resort because it had been so long since I’d been out of the house. We found the vitamins and they buy one get one free. That was a nice bonus! Next, the big phone call came. I was in the living room on the couch sick and couldn’t get up so Alan answered my phone. I could tell he was focused on what he was saying and I could tell the other person on the phone shared that focus. It was the day after my MRI and my doctor called to tell us I had a massive tumor and needed to see the neurosurgeon immediately. We needed to be at the office in one hour and we lived an hour and fifteen minutes away. Once we got to the office I met the nicest doctor, staff, and nurses ever. They explained how I needed surgery and it needed to happen Tuesday. I finally knew what was wrong with me. It felt good to know that there was something and people were willing to take care of me. So Tuesday at 5:30 am I was at UT hospital and at 5:39 they were preparing me for surgery. Surgery went well. I woke up pain-free, I have my vision back, and I remember things without asking the same question three or four times in a row. Then I felt something. I felt YOU ALL! I felt you praying for me. My daughter and son read me Facebook messages, Instagram messages, and texts messages. They told me how much money was being donated on the Go Fund Me page and I was overwhelmed! You know I didn’t cry because I had a brain tumor. I cried because of how much love I felt from you! I had no idea that so many people knew my blog or me. You all are the reason I’m healing so well. You’re the reason my recovery is going so well. You’re the reason I can look at the hospital bills and know that everything will be alright. It’s you. You’re the angles that have lifted me and carried me through this. Thank you! For some reason, the words thank you don’t seem like enough. I want to give you all bear hugs and share a cookie with you. I want to show you how much you mean to me because you showed me so much love that I’ve had a pain-free recovery. I still feel the love you’re sending me. I still feel the prayers you’re praying for me. I still feel the speedy recovery taking place and it’s because of you. Thank you! Please keep praying. I go back to the doctor tomorrow to have my 2-week follow-up appointment. I will also have another MRI in six months to make sure “Bouncer” the Big Brain Tumor doesn’t come back. I have to admit, for the past few days, I’ve been working on this podcast. It’s been 2 weeks and one day since my surgery. I haven’t felt this good in years! That’s because “Bouncer” has been growing in my brain for the last five to ten years. Now he’s gone and God is showing me what to do with my life. He showed me before but because of your love, I see things very clearly. I’m going to do what He wants me to do and the first thing is to tell you how you’ve blessed me. You’ve blessed me more than any of us will ever know! The second thing we all need to do is continue to show this love to others. Who knew having Cookie Camp with a few people I knew online would lead to such a strong, kind, loving community? Not me. I thought it would be a fun weekend. Nope. It was a weekend that changed my life and showed me how much love is in this world. Again, it’s because of you. Thank you! I’m getting a few tears now so I’m going to share a few pictures of my family with you. Then, I’m going to have a talk with God and tell him again and again how thankful, grateful, and blessed I am because of you. I love you all and you’ll never know how much you have touched my heart and my life! God bless you all! This is my oldest son Chase cutting my chicken so I can eat it. The first meal I’d had in weeks. UT has good hospital food! Thanks, Chase for the help! When I woke up from surgery I asked Tylor, my other son, to make me chicken and dumplings. He said he’d make them and we’d eat them. Well, thanks to the drugs I was under I told him I didn’t want to eat them. I just wanted to watch him to make them! Well, he made them when I got home and we all ate them. This guy can cook! Thanks Tylor! This is my daughter Madison. She is smart, beautiful, and can do anything in this world! She is wearing a “Bouncer” Band! I didn’t know that I had to have my head covered every time I go outside for the next two years but the doctor said the sun could cause my incision damage so I bought some super cute headbands from Amazon. Once Madison saw them she made a purchase herself. Then, she sent me a text telling me she is wearing her “Bouncer” Band! Made me very happy! bobbimscott named the headbands “Bouncer” Bands and I love it! My mom and daughter-in-law even ordered some! Thanks bobbimscott for the cool name for them! Heres the gang with “Bouncer” Bands! Alan, Tylor, Heather, Madison and me! I love headbands! This is Anne, Chase, Brooke, and Tripp. They’re at the Georgia Aquarium today and they’re sending me pictures. It makes me feel like I’m there with them! Thanks for sharing the pictures with me guys. #20 Mama Mayer Bakery with Diane Mayer #20 Mama Mayer Bakery with Diane Mayer I met Diane at Cookie Con and we formed an instant friendship. It started off by having breakfast together and inviting someone we didn’t know to sit with us. It was a great breakfast and an even better friendship that started that day. We don’t talk often because of busy lives, but when we do, we know why we’re friends. The power of a cookie brought us together and will help us stay friends for years to come. This is why this podcast is so important to me. You can take a little sugar, butter, and eggs and turn it into cookies that form friendships that will last a lifetime. Diane has lived in different states and has made cookies along the way. She donates them to fundraisers, gives cookie gifts to people she meets, and to those who volunteer their time and efforts to something they’re passionate about. This is what The Power of a Cookie is about. Diane makes everyone she knows feel as if they are the most important people in the world one cookie at a time. She fills the cookie box with love and cookies made just for them. She’s a beautiful person on the inside and out and she makes a difference one cookie at a time. This podcast is full of inspiration and how to come up with cute ideas on cookies to make. Mama Mayer Bakery will share how she comes up with the cookie puns and ideas. It makes me want to go into the kitchen now and begin baking something like Diane does with cookies and a lot of love. If you want to know where to find Mama Mayer Bakery just follow the links below. I promise you’ll love her cookies and you won’t forget them! Mama Mayer Bakery Instagram- Mamamayerbakery Bear hugs,…

#18 Clough'D 9 Cookies with Amy Clough #18 Clough'D 9 Cookies with Amy Clough Are you ready for a fun podcast? I hope so because today we're bringing you Amy Clough from Clough'D 9 Cookies. She has a bachelors degree in biology, a master's degree in education, and taught middle school science for 15 years before she decided to become a full-time cookie decorator. Her mother taught her how to decorate cakes and her grandfather was a classically trained pastry chef so you could say that baking runs in her family, but Amy didn't always want to be a cookie decorator. So does the question, "How did she become a cookie decorator?" cross your mind? It did mine. Her mom would give her cookie cutters as a gift and Amy would say thank you and then wonder why someone would spend that kind of time decorating them. She learned that adding a little icing and a few sprinkles are not the same as decorating them with royal icing. One day she was bitten by the decorating bug and now look at her. A full-time decorator that clearly understands how to decorated cookies as much as she does biology. Of course, a trip to Cookie Con back in 2012 may have given her a little push in the icing direction. So what's a girl to do when she's a teacher and wants to decorate full-time? Well, if she's like Amy and married to Mike, she'll quit her teaching position, build a commercial kitchen in the backyard, purchase some office and storage equipment, get all the approvals she needs to sell cookies, and decorate some of the cutest cookies you've ever seen. It worked for Amy. She has a place in the backyard that holds her cookie dreams and she makes magic there. Now I can continue to tell you all about Clough'D 9 Cookies because it's a great story, but I want you to listen to Amy's podcast. She'll tell you that she's now a cookie decorator (she's very good), loves cookies and making people happy by sharing the cookies she's created for them! What she describes in the podcast is exactly what The Power of a Cookie is. Seriously, you need to hear it from someone with a masters degree in education because you know she'll tell you the truth just as I've been telling. Flour, sugar, butter, and love can make a person feel really special and I'm so glad the cookie community has people like Amy to help spread the love across the globe! So, what are you waiting for? Go listen to the podcast and then go tell Amy how much we love her. Where can you find Clough'D 9 Cookies and Amy Clough? I'm glad you asked! #18 Clough'D 9 Cookies with Amy Clough Clough'D 9 Cookies Facebook CloughD9CookiesSweets Instagram: amy_cloughd9cookies Thank you, Amy, for sharing your story with us. You're one of the sweetest people I've ever met. You're inspiring, and one cookie decorator that deserves an A+! Thank you for sharing The Power of a Cookie and your talents and kindness with the world! Bear hugs,…

Alan and I've have been working on a few things on the blog and now it's time to add The Cookie Network! Are you excited? I know I am. If you've listened to the podcast I'm sure you heard about the wonderful people I've found that help me create The Bearfoot Baker and I want to tell you about them. First of all, they're kind and know how to make things happen. I don't know about you, but that's huge to me. They're extremely professional, make things look great, and everything works the way it's should. Talk about huge! Most of all they make you excited about the things you're doing and encourage you to do it by providing the "blog tools" you need. Did I mention I love these people? Are you ready to meet them and get the resource links that helped me tremendously with my blog? Here we go. Purr Design- Lindsay and Taylor designed my blog and I love it! They have a blog, own a small business, and know what we need to make things work. Check out their site and see what they offer. I know you'll be glad you did. Melissa Rose Design & Branding - Melissa is an amazing designer and she can talk my lingo. Check out her site about blogging & branding, sign up for her foundation workbook, and join her Design Clubhouse where you can connect with other food and DIY bloggers. I promise you'll learn and grow confidence like I did. Once Coupled - Lauren is the founder and developer of Once Coupled. She's a very talented woman who knows how to code and make your blog work perfectly! I don't know how she does it, but she does. She takes my ideas and asks me the right questions to find out what I want and then she explains how it will work. I don't know about you, but this is very helpful in making the right decisions so my blog will be beautiful and efficient. #17 What's New on The Bearfoot Baker All of these companies are professional and organized and they see how to help us make our blog designs come to life. Every now and then you meet someone who has a different view of life and it makes you stop and think. I met Michelle Jones from Sweet Charity Cookies at Cookie Con and she's one of those people with an amazing view on how to help others. When I think about donating cookies or selling them to raise money, I never would've thought about selling them to raise money for children's hospice, but that's exactly what Michelle does. Michelle designs and decorates thousands of cookies and sells them to raise money to donate to the families in need. When you first hear 'children's hospice' you probably get sad because we all know that hospice provides care for the sick, especially the terminally ill. When you think about a child needing that kind of care you automatically feel your heart breaking. If you listen to the podcast, Michelle talks about how hospice is a happy place. The children go to rest, but there is also sensory games and activities for all the children including the brothers and sisters. It makes a difference and helps support the families during this time. Michelle has made and sold thousands of cookies to help support Frances House which is the children's hospice that's local to Michelle's area. She and her family donate all supplies it takes to make packages the cookies. Then they go to the Christmas market to sell them. As you listen to the podcast you will hear how kind and sweet Michelle is. She's truly passionate about helping the Frances House Families. If you hear about a child with life-limiting illnesses I hope you'll think of how Michelle and her family use the power of a cookie. Raising money to help families facing these challenges is a very smart way to use a cookie to change the world. Thank you, Michelle. The world can use more people like you! 9 Sweet Charity Cookies with Michelle Jones Follow Michelle at Sweet Charity Cookies on Instagram. Bear hugs,…
There are so many things to do as the holidays approach. We need to make Thanksgiving dinner, buy Christmas presents, find the perfect gift for our spouse, and dress our cookies so they'll be the shining star on the dessert table! Do you feel the pressure? You don't have to be that stressed because I know where you can find the perfect accessories for all your sweets! Hillary Ramos at The Cookie Countess will show you how to add a little sparkle, stencil a pattern, or airbrush some unique designs to make sure your cookies and sweets will be set apart from the rest. Her store has products you'll love along with tutorials that will help you become a better decorator. Have you seen The Cookie Countess Black Friday Deals yet? You can get a sneak peek and make a plan for supplies you need. I'm sure you're going to find inspiration for all your sweets when you start looking at the products on her site. I feel like Hillary keeps me up to date on new products. Did you know what Roxy & Rich Sparkle Dust Pumps were? I didn't until she showed them on her site. It looks like a great way to brighten a cookie or add a little sparkle to your cakes. I can't wait to try them. Speaking of new tools, the Precision Rolling Pin is my new favorite. Don't get me wrong, I still use my J.K. Adams 19" x 2" Maple Wood Rolling Dowel for pies, biscuits and chasing away bears (not really, I have a cowbell for that), but the Precision Rolling Pin is now the fav for making cookies. The cookie dough is the perfect thickness every time no matter how hard I push down when I roll it out. So Hillary keeping me up to date on products and gives me options for perfect accessories like stencils, molds, food gel colors, airbrush colors and so many things that make me a better decorator. She inspires me. She helps supply my cookies with personality, sparkle and video tutorials that makes things simple. Thanks, Hillary! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHhwPRK9b6c&feature=youtu.be If you've listened to the podcast I'm sure you've heard how Georganne and I decided to take some money from Hillary's poor husband Jon at Cookie Con 2014. We gave it back, but the look on Jon's face and the joy on Georganne's face were hysterical. So here's a tip for you, if you go to Cookie Con, don't carry your money in your back pocket. Who knows what Georganne and I might do! ;) Now it's time for The Perfect Accessories for all Your SWEETS! I'll contact you by email with the Gift Card information! Congrats again!! UPDATE: I like the name for Hillary's Precision Rolling Pin. I don't want to change the name of it. If you want to decorate with royal icing, buttercream, or fondant you need to stalk (I mean that in the nicest way) Autumn Carpenter. She is an author, teacher, and an award-winning designer that has skills that are sure to inspire us all. Do you see why I named this podcast Decorator & Inspiration to All? That's because she is! Not only does she decorate, but she's also served as a judge in cake decorating competitions, she's been a member, teacher, and demonstrator at the International Cake Exploration Society (ICES) for nearly 20 years. Autumn is a co-owner of Country Kitchen SweetArt which is a cake and candy supply store. I could live there with all the amazing products they sell, but that's against the health codes. Oh well, I guess I'll continue to stalk her online. #7 Decorator & Inspiration to All Do you see why I think we should all stalk her? She has all those wicked mad skills and she's one of the nicest people I've ever met! As a matter of fact, you'll find out for yourself in a minute why we are doing this podcast. It's not to talk about all the books she's published, or how amazing she is and let me tell you, she's pretty darn amazing. She's here to talk about something special that Autumn, myself, and other decorators have been working on. Listen to the podcast to find out more. I know you're going to love it and support it. In the meantime, here is where you can find Autumn. Country Kitchen SweetArt Autumn Carpenter Designs Cookie Decorating Sweet Elite Remember when I mentioned Autumn's books? Here are some of them. Samantha Baughman is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee and owns and operates Sammie B’s Sweets. She started Operation Cookie Takeover in 2013 when a friend, Natasha was deployed. Samantha and a few friends wanted to send her a little cookie love to show her they missed and supported her. They thought they would send ten to twelve dozen cookies, but Samantha said, “Cookiers have a tendency to go overboard” and before they knew what happened, they had 10,000 cookies pledged. Natasha didn’t receive ten dozen cookies. Nope. She ended up organizing a huge event on base and helped pass out thousands of delicious cookies that you all sent. What better way for to show support by sending a box of beautiful cookies. The comfort of home, a few homemade cookies, and baked goods is a great place to start. The first year they sent ten thousand cookies and within the last four years, they have sent over eighty-thousand cookies! If you’re not a cookie decorator, don’t worry. You can send chocolate chip cookies, brownies, or any kind of baked goods you want to send. Just send something amazing so the soldiers will know we support them, want them to stay safe, and are sending love their way. During the podcast, Samantha tells us about an elementary school who worked together to send to send hundreds of cookies overseas. If you have kids in elementary school, you’re a teacher, have kids in scouts, on a sports team, or maybe even talk to your Sunday School Class you can organize a cookie takeover. All you have to do is ask! Don’t stop at baked goods. You can have the kids write letters or make cards to show them we are thinking of them. The troops will love it. If you work with a large number of kids, it can get expensive shipping the cookies. Samantha said sometimes people want to help and show support, but don’t have time to bake. They’ll give money so you might be able to get a scholarship so everyone is involved in making sure the soldiers know how grateful we are for all the sacrifices they make. So don’t feel like you have to take all of this on by yourself. People want to help so more soldiers get cookies. How great is this! Each year Operation Cookie Takeover has a theme and this year its Thanksgiving. You can also send patriotic, Christmas cookies, those cute little slice and baked cookies from the grocery store or other baked goods. If you want to send cookies they will be shipped November 13th-November 17th. If you can’t ship cookies within those dates, don’t worry. Samantha has a backup plan so you can still participate. You’ll have one extra step, but you can still ship the cookies to let a soldier know you care. Send an email to Samantha and let her know you can’t make the shipping date and she’ll tell you what you need to do. If you want to send cookies in November, visit the Operation Cookie Takeover Volunteer Sign Up page. Expect an email on November 9th or 10th which will contain the address of your soldier. The spring event hasn’t been scheduled yet, but if you signup you’ll receive an email about one month before the cookies are due. The cookies need to be individually wrapped so soldiers can share with each other. Operation Cookie Takeover: If you need packaging, shipping information, printables, or info on a special box from the post office here's where you’ll find it in the links: Facebook ‘Submit A Soldier’ A printable flyer Thank you, Leslie, at Gingerhead Cookies (Facebook) for helping Samantha organize things this year. I know she’s going to love all the help your giving her! Bear hugs,…

Share the Cookie Love is a perfect title for this post because that's exactly what Maryann Rollins aka The Cookie Artisan does. She's is one of those special people who make you feel as if you've known her forever. She has a bubbly personality, awesome smile and she's always full of positive things to say about other people. She's special to me because she takes the time to inspire, encourage, and help others with her cookie decorating. Words are powerful and I don't have enough to describe this amazing hero of mine and what she does with her power of a cookie. In this episode, we're going to talk about how Maryann uses cookies to "bake the world better one cookie at a time." She gave cookies to her daughters pre-school class so the kids would feel special. Maryann sold cookie classes to 5 women at $500 each to raise money for elementary school. She makes cookies for the band kids and they call them "show cookies" and won't eat them because they're so beautiful. There are so many different fundraisers she makes cookies for that I can't possibly name them all. One of the charities Maryann is working with now is Limbs for Life. It's a program that helps people all over the world get prosthetics and they even collect used prosthetics so they can use the parts to repair those that break. They work with missionaries to deliver and repair them in foreign countries. Sometimes when you mail things, they don't arrive because of various reasons. Limbs for Life sends people to deliver them personally to make sure those in need get help. Maryann met Adrianne Haslet, the ballroom dancer that lost her leg in the Boston bombings. Maryann said that Adrianne's story changed her forever. She recommends we visit Adrianne Haslet-Davis on Facebook and her website www.adriannehaslet.com to see her life after the tragic event. She's a motivational speaker who works tirelessly all over the world to raise awareness for Limbs for Life. She's also a board member. The list of things she does goes on and on. I know a little about how a prosthetic arm works because my son Tylor was born without a left hand. He wore his prosthetic for a short time in his life, but he chooses not to wear one. With or without it that boy can do anything! He rock climbs, plays the piano, works on computers, fishes, and anything else you can imagine. I'm always amazed by him. Maryann told me that on average, 507 people lose a limb a day. That's number is shocking. I never dreamed it was so high. I think the most shocking part is most people don't have insurance to cover it. They cost thousands of dollars and you need to replace them every 6 years or so. If you want to help, make a donation, or find out more on how to donate used prosthetics, you can find information on the Limbs for Life Give Now, page. Do you see why Maryann is one of my cookie heroes? You don't have to have anything more than butter, sugar, royal icing, and love to bake the world better one cookie at a time. You can give cookies to kids, your postal worker, firemen, police officers, or someone random. It will put a smile on their face and make them feel special. Maryann is really good at giving people a cookie hug! Who do you want to Share the Cookie Love with today? No one knows how to host a cookie party like Karen Summers from Cookie Con. She invites people to teach us the latest cookie decorating techniques, brings tools and supplies so we can roll up our sleeves and learn how to use them with experts standing by to help, she throws a great banquet with lots of giveaways, and she does so much more! On the Cookie Con home page, it says "Inspire & be Inspired" and that's exactly what Mike and Karen do. 3: Inspire & be Inspired Karen Summers In this episode of the podcast, Karen talks about her first job. I'll bet you'll never guess what it was. Yep. A cookie decorator. She actually started making cakes and quickly found a love for decorating cookies. When I met Karen we had an instant bond and friendship that has continued to grow stronger each year and it all started with a weekend of cookie camp. Now with Cookie Con, Karen and Mike continue making a place where decorators can get together and experiment with supplies, meet new friends, and form friendships that will last a lifetime. We all know the many talents of Karen like how she can juggle four kids. Decorate cakes and cookies. Organize a huge cookie convention with one hand tied behind her back. And has a million other talents that I'm totally jealous of. But did you know that her husband Mike is a very talented painter? The paintings are breathtaking! You can find Mike Summers Art here. There is a painting of a butterfly that looks so real you'll think it's photograph instead of a painting. Not to mention the other incredible works of art. His work is incredible! You really need to see his artwork! Episode #2: All Things Good-Callye Alverado Sweet Sugarbelle I'm so happy to have Callye of Sweet Sugarbelle as our guest today. When it comes to decorating cookies, designing cutters, teaching us tips, tricks and showing us cookie decorating techniques, no one does it better than Callye Alverado from Sweet Sugarbelle. You’ve probably heard me mention her and have seen me share links to her amazing tutorials on the blog. She has taught us everything from how to make the perfect royal icing color to how to bend a cookie cutter to the shape we need. Now she’s busy with her product line designing cookie cutters and products that will change the way we make cookies. I’ve watched her go from a mother who fills cookie orders and shared her photos on Flickr to a businesswoman who is making cookie cutters, shapeshifters, and decorating tools. In this episode, Callye is going to talk about how she made cookies from her home, started her Sweet Sugarbelle blog, to designing products we can’t wait to get our hands on. Callye doesn’t let anything stop her from creating and designing beautiful creative cookies and helping us reach our decorating goals. “Most of the worst things that happened to me, with time and a little bit of effort and work on my part, end up being the best things that happen to me.” -Callye Alverado From showing us how to make royal icing colors to shape-shifting cutters, I think Callye has taught us all things about cookie decorating that will forever be part of our decorating foundation. The Power of a Cookie is about baking the world better one cookie at a time and I can say Callye has changed one decorator at a time with all the tips, techniques, and helping us find and embrace our creativity. I know you probably already know where to find Callye and her amazing cookies, but just in case, here are a few links to help. The last link is to Flickr and I think you should go see where Callye's cookies began. Episode #1 Success doesn't come to you. You go get it! When I think of Frances Du Toit of Banana Bakery I can't help but smile. I met her at Cookie Con 2017 and she has left a forever happy place in my heart. Maybe I should start from the beginning. Every time I go to Cookie Con I make new friends and sometimes, they introduce me to some of their sweet friends. Well, that is how I met Frances Fu Toit and I'm glad I did. My friend Diane from Mama Mayer Bakery brought Barbara Poirrier from Cajun Home Sweets, Amanda Morris from Semi Sweet Confections and Frances Du Toit to breakfast with her. As my husband and I sat there enjoying 'cookie company' I decided to ask everyone how they got started decorating cookies. When Frances spoke, I sat there with my jaw on the floor. She started telling us her story and we all were completely amazed, speechless, and inspired. Even my husband, who doesn't even eat sugar cookies, was listening to every word Frances had to say. I won't tell you any thing else because I think you'll like it a lot better if you listen to the podcast. You're gonna learn how nothing could stop Frances from her success. If her story doesn't inspire you the way it did me I'll be shocked! Before we did this interview, I sent Frances a little questionnaire. I asked if she had any advice or tips she'd like to share and here is what she said: "What works for someone else may not work for you. The best way to learn is to experiment and to practice, practice, practice!" Franceses never give up attitude is contagious. After listening to this podcast I feel as if I can do anything and achieve success. Hard work, practice, and knowing nothing can stop us is something we all need to practice so we can achieve our dreams. She's the perfect example. Episode #1 Success doesn't come to you. You go get it! Be sure to visit Frances at the links below and show her some love. Anyone who takes a 45-minute ferry ride with a backpack and a rolling suit case to purchase baking supplies is definitely my inspiration.
