A profound silence has fallen across the world today as Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Catholic Church, has passed away. In his final months, his health visibly declined, bringing an end to a papacy marked by transformation, compassion, andbold leadership. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his path to the Vatican was anything but traditional. Entering religious life later than most, he brought a unique worldview forged from years of real world experience. From his first days as pope, he broke with convention, bypassing lavish tradition for humility, dialogue, and reform. Pope Francis’s legacy is undeniable. He spoke openly about climate change, inequality, and the need for inclusivity within the Church. He reached across borders: geographic, ideological, and spiritual, to build bridges and heal wounds. His papacy has left a lasting impact not only on the Church but on global consciousness. In today’s special episode of the Spanish Loops, Fran and I reflect on this monumental figure. With reverence and depth, we explore his life, unexpected path into the Church, and the institutional transformations he inspired. This episode also poses essential questions: Will his reforms hold? Who will lead next? Fran and myself, like millions around the world, hoped this reflection would not come so soon. But death, inevitable and indifferent, reminds us of the finite nature of human legacy, even one as vast as Pope Francis’s. His deep spirituality, love for the marginalized, and vision for a modern Church will continue to be studied, debated, and cherished for generations. As we grieve, we also give thanks to a leader who dared to change, to question, and to love beyond tradition. Rest now, Pope Francis. Your voice may be gone, but your words will always echo.…

Hola amigos!, welcome back to Spanish Loops! Today, we're digging into the life of Miguel Servet, a 16th-century Spanish polymath. Born around 1511 in Villanueva de Sigena, Aragon, Servet was a theologian, physician, and humanist. He had a knack for languages, mastering Latin, Greek, and Hebrew early on. His academic journey took him to Toulouse for law and later to Paris for medicine. Servet's medical insights were groundbreaking. He was among the first Europeans to describe pulmonary circulation, detailing how blood moves from the heart to the lungs and back—a revelation that challenged existing beliefs. But it was his theological views that stirred the pot. In works like "De Trinitatis Erroribus" (1531), he questioned the concept of the Trinity, ruffling feathers in both Catholic and Protestant circles. Facing backlash, he adopted the pseudonym Michel de Villeneuve and relocated to France. In 1553, Servet published "Christianismi Restitutio," further challenging mainstream theology and including his findings on blood circulation. This led to his arrest and trial in Geneva, where, under John Calvin's influence, he was condemned for heresy and burned at the stake on October 27, 1553. Servet's legacy is profound, influencing religious tolerance debates and advancing medical science. That's it for today's episode on Miguel Servet. Stay curious, and keep looping in!…

Hey everyone, and welcome to a brand-new episode! This week, we're diving very deep into the shifting global panorama, analysing the latest moves from the Russian government, the new dynamics in the White House, and how Europe is responding to these ongoing challenges. First up, the concept of a unified European army takes centre stage. With the U.S. adopting a more reserved stance on international engagements, Europe is moving towards strengthening its own defence mechanisms. The challenge lies in whether a coalition of European nations can develop military capabilities comparable to those traditionally supported by the U.S. Next, Europe's efforts to reduce dependency on Chinese communications components continue to gain power. In an era where data is the new gold, securing independent communication channels has become a big priority. The transition is very challenging, requires strategic planning and a lot of investment to ensure stability and security. We'll also discuss the buzz around Norway's potential EU membership. With its substantial oil reserves, Norway's entry could reshape the EU's energy landscape. But what does this mean for other member countries and the wider geopolitical balance? Ukraine remains central in global politics. Despite halted U.S. military aid, its forces resist Russian advances. The impact of this suspension shapes the region's future. The Middle East, always in flux, feels the effects of shifting global dynamics. Join us for this insightful discussion, where we peel back the layers of these pressing issues and offer our humble perspectives. Don't miss out!…

This week in Spanish Loops, we talk about the quintessential Spanish culinary tradition known as the "Menú del Día." Established in 1965 under a law enacted during Francisco Franco's regime, the Menú del Día was initially introduced as the "menú turístico", (tourist menu) to promote tourism. This legislation mandated that restaurants offer a fixed-price midday meal, ensuring both tourists and local workers had access to affordable and nutritious lunch options. Traditionally available during lunchtime on working days, the Menú del Día typically includes three courses: a starter (primer plato), a main course (segundo plato), and a dessert (postre). Often, a beverage such as water, wine, or beer is included, and some establishments may also offer dessert and/or coffee to conclude the meal. This format not only provides a hearty meal but also reflects the Spanish custom of enjoying a substantial lunch, known as "la comida," which is the main meal of the day. Over the decades, the Menú del Día has become a tradition in Spanish restaurants, particularly during working days lunchtimes. It offers lunches with a variety of choices at reasonable prices, making it a popular option among both locals and visitors seeking to experience authentic Spanish cuisine. Despite changes in meals habits and economic conditions, the Menú del Día remains a cherished institution, embodying our rich culinary heritage and commitment to communal gatherings.…

In this week’s episode of Spanish Loops, we develop a portion of the fascinating historical connections between the Crown of Castilla and the guerrilla wars against the Ottoman Empire in the 1600s. The 17th century marked a critical point in European history, with the Ottoman Empire’s expansion posing a significant challenge to Christian kingdoms. The Crown of Castilla played a pivotal and critical role, supporting efforts to counter Ottoman advances through strategic alliances and funding guerrilla-style resistance. These conflicts shaped the geopolitical landscape of Europe, forging fragile alliances and deepening the divide between East and West. Sicily, a key stronghold under Spanish control, served as a crucial barrier against Ottoman incursions into the central Mediterranean. Its fortifications and naval bases became essential in halting further Ottoman expansion. The island’s position not only protected Southern Europe but also allowed Castilla to project power across the Mediterranean, reinforcing the cultural and political boundaries that defined Europe’s development during this era. Dive deep into this compelling chapter of history with us as we explore how these events influenced the balance of power in Europe, laying the groundwork for the continent’s modern political landscape.
