At the dawn of the social media era, Belle Gibson became a pioneering wellness influencer - telling the world how she beat cancer with an alternative diet. Her bestselling cookbook and online app provided her success, respect, and a connection to the cancer-battling influencer she admired the most. But a curious journalist with a sick wife began asking questions that even those closest to Belle began to wonder. Was the online star faking her cancer and fooling the world? Kaitlyn Dever stars in the Netflix hit series Apple Cider Vinegar . Inspired by true events, the dramatized story follows Belle’s journey from self-styled wellness thought leader to disgraced con artist. It also explores themes of hope and acceptance - and how far we’ll go to maintain it. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews executive producer Samantha Strauss. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched Apple Cider Vinegar yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts .…

Critical Thinking Could Gaza become the USA's 51st State? The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0010 In this week's Black Spy Podcast we attempt to answer the question on most people's lips who have an interest in geo-politics - could Gaza really become the US's 51st State: President Trump's proposal for the U.S. to "take over" Gaza and transform it into the "Riviera of the Middle East" has sparked widespread controversy and criticism. The plan involves relocating nearly 2 million Palestinians from Gaza to other countries, with the U.S. assuming ownership and redeveloping the territory into a luxury destination. While Trump claims this would bring peace and economic prosperity, the proposal has been condemned as a violation of international law, akin to ethnic cleansing, and a threat to regional stability . Arab states, including Egypt and Jordan, have rejected the idea, emphasizing the need for a two-state solution and the protection of Palestinian rights . Critics argue the plan is impractical, risks radicalizing Palestinians, and could destabilize neighboring countries . Despite Trump's assertion that "everybody loves" the idea, the global backlash suggests it is unlikely to gain traction and may further complicate Middle East peace efforts. Once again this week's Black Spy podcast has attempted to today’s burning questions, from which we might all learn. Don’t forget to subscribe to The Black Spy Podcast to never miss an episode. Is Britain Corrupt (Part 2) The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0009 This week's Black Spy Podcast asks the question: Is Britain, and indeed the West, corrupt? During part two of this fascinating discussion, Carlton King and Dr. Rachel Taylor suggest that what is all important is the definition and perception of what corruption is. The Black Spy Podcast team argue that corruption involves the abuse of power for personal gain, encompassing both overt acts, such as bribery, and more subtle forms, such as cronyism or undue influence. So, although there are, in Britain and in many Western nations, robust legal frameworks, independent judiciaries, and a semblance of a free media, supposedly contributing to transparency and accountability, it can not be taken for granted that these measures work. Hence, although the UK has bodies like the the National Audit Office and parliamentary committees tasked with scrutinizing public spending and governance questions, the issue remains live. Western countries often rank relatively high on indices like Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, reflecting lower levels of perceived corruption compared to many other regions. But is this correct? Criticisms of corruption in the West often center on systemic issues rather than overt illegality. Examples of this include lobbying, where wealthy individuals or corporations wield disproportionate influence over policy-making and opportunities for enrichment. This raises ethical concerns, even if it adheres to legal frameworks. The "revolving door" between politics and private industry is another area of lack of scrutiny, as it can blur lines between public service and private interests. Furthermore, scandals such as the 2009 UK parliamentary expenses controversy or financial misconduct exposed during the 2008 economic crisis demonstrate these vulnerabilities. Similarly, some argue that offshore tax havens linked to Western jurisdictions enable global financial corruption. Hence, in conclusion, while Britain and the West exhibit relatively low levels of overt corruption, systemic practices and scandals often come to light that suggest that the region is not immune to its own ethical and accountability challenges. Moreover, the Black Spy Podcast team note that perceptions of corruption often depend on the accepted societal norms, expectations, and evolving definitions of those compiling corruption indices. TRUMP 2.0 - War or Peace? Black Spy Podcast - Season 18, Episode 0007 This weeks Black Spy Podcast looks at the potential for the new Donald Trump presidency. What will it bring in the short and the long term to the USA and the world at large. Will Trump presidency 2.0 bring a return to his signature policies of MAGA and thereby a continuation of his populist approach. We can expect a focus on America First initiatives, emphasizing domestic manufacturing, energy independence, and stricter immigration controls. Trump may also seek to revive tax cuts and deregulation efforts, aiming thereby to stimulate economic growth and appeal to his MAGA base. In foreign policy, a Trump administration might prioritize bilateral agreements over multilateral engagements, thereby seeking to end the war in the Ukraine and intervene more strongly in the Middle East to the detriment or possibly advantage of peace. His actions could also potentially lead to a more US isolationist stance. Relations with China could remain contentious, with a focus on trade imbalances and perceived national security concerns. Trump's approach to NATO and other alliances may also be re-evaluated, emphasizing a transactional view of international relations. Socially, a Trump presidency could intensify the polarization seen during his first term. Expect a continuation of culture war rhetoric, particularly around issues like education, race, and gender. His administration may push for conservative judicial appointments and policies that align with his base's values. Overall, a Trump presidency could be characterized by a blend of populism, nationalism, and a contentious political climate, with significant implications for both domestic and international landscapes. The potential for increased division and debate over governance is likely to remain a hallmark of his leadership. Downfall! - The coming end of the US Empire (Part 2) The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0006 As we enter 2025, the perceived decline of the U.S. Empire is marked by a confluence of economic, political, and social challenges. Domestically, increasing polarization and political instability have eroded public trust in institutions, leading to a fragmented society. Economic disparities have widened, with a shrinking middle class and rising inflation contributing to discontent. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed vulnerabilities in the healthcare system and supply chains, prompting calls for systemic reform. Internationally, the U.S. faces growing competition from rising powers like China and Russia, which have expanded their influence through strategic alliances and economic initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative. The U.S.'s withdrawal from global leadership roles, exemplified by its handling of climate change and international agreements, has diminished its soft power and credibility on the world stage. Moreover, military overreach and prolonged engagements in the Middle East have strained resources and public support, leading to questions about the sustainability of U.S. foreign policy. As global dynamics shift, the U.S. must navigate a multipolar world where its dominance is increasingly challenged, prompting a reevaluation of its role and strategies in an evolving geopolitical landscape. The combination of these factors signals a significant transformation in the U.S. Empire's standing. Christmas and New Year TV - What’s the hidden message? (Part 2) The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0003 In keeping with the Christmas spirit the Black Spy Podcast team continues its geo-political analysis of Xmas and its commercial and state psychological hidden messages: The scheduling of Christmas and New Year television broadcasts in the UK and beyond often reflects a hidden agenda that intertwines cultural, commercial, and political interests. During this festive period, networks curate programming that emphasizes nostalgia, family values, and community spirit, aiming to attract large audiences. Classic films, holiday specials, and live events are strategically placed to evoke emotional connections and reinforce cultural traditions. However, beneath this festive veneer lies a commercial motive. Advertisers capitalize on the increased viewership, leading to higher advertising rates and significant revenue for broadcasters. The scheduling often prioritizes big-budget productions and celebrity appearances, which can overshadow smaller, independent projects, raising questions about representation and diversity in media. Moreover, the choice of programming can subtly influence public sentiment and national identity. For instance, certain narratives may promote specific political ideologies or social values, shaping viewers' perceptions during a time of reflection and resolution. In this way, the festive broadcast schedule serves not only as entertainment but also as a tool for cultural reinforcement and economic gain, revealing the complex interplay between media, society, and commerce during the holiday season. So, enjoy this and next week’s episodes and continue to be entertained whilst learning and above all don’t forget to subcribe to never miss an episode. Critical Thinking - Syria: How, Why & What Next? The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0002 The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011 as part of the broader Arab Spring, has evolved into a complex and multifaceted civil war involving numerous domestic and international actors. Initially sparked by protests against President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the conflict quickly escalated into a violent struggle as the government responded with brutal crackdowns. Over the years, the war has drawn in various foreign powers, each with its own interests and agendas. The United States has been involved in the conflict primarily through its support for rebel groups, some radical Islamists and due to its fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). Washington has provided military aid and training to these opposition forces, while also conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets. However, the U.S. has been cautious about overt direct involvement against the Assad regime, focusing instead on counterterrorism efforts. Russia, on the other hand, has been a staunch ally of the Assad government, providing military support that has been crucial in turning the tide of the war in favour of the regime. Since 2015, Russian airstrikes and military advisors have bolstered Assad's forces, allowing them to reclaim significant territory. Russia's involvement is driven by its desire to maintain a foothold in the Middle East and to counter U.S. influence in the region. The United Kingdom has also played primarily a covert role utilising humanitarian aid plus limited military support to opposition groups. The UK has been involved in airstrikes against ISIS and has supported diplomatic efforts to find a political solution to the conflict. However, its influence has been overshadowed by the more direct interventions of the U.S. and Russia. Turkey's involvement is particularly significant due to its concerns over Kurdish groups in northern Syria, which it views as extensions of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party), a designated terrorist organization. Turkey has conducted military operations against both ISIS and Kurdish forces, seeking to establish a buffer zone along its border. Additionally, Turkey has supported various rebel factions, aiming to counteract both the Assad regime and Kurdish influence. Israel's role in the conflict has been more indirect but nonetheless impactful. Israel has conducted airstrikes against Iranian positions and Hezbollah in Syria, viewing the presence of these groups as a direct threat to its national security. Israel has also provided humanitarian aid to Syrian civilians, but its primary focus remains on countering Iranian influence in the region. So recent development of the fall of Damascus after Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, took Idlib changed matters totally adding another layer of complexity to the conflict. HTS, which evolved from the al-Nusra Front, is clearly the dominant force in the region, albeit that HTS is often at odds with other rebel factions in addition to the Assad regime. Al-Jolani has sought to rebrand HTS as a more moderate entity, attempting to gain legitimacy and support from local populations and international actors. The takeover by HTS has raised concerns among the major powers involved. In summary, the Syrian conflict is characterized by a web of alliances and enmities among local and international actors, with the recent developments surrounding HTS and al-Jolani further complicating an already volatile situation. The interplay of U.S., Russian, UK, Turkish, and Israeli interests will still continue to shape the trajectory of this war weary country. Oh Oh Oh - The Contemporary Geo-Politics of a Christmas Carol The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0001 In keeping with the Christmas spirit the Black Spy Podcast team brings you an analysis of a classic piece of Christmas literature through the prism of contemporary events, so hold your Victorian horses and step inside this brilliant and entertaining Christmas podcast. Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," while set in Victorian England, offers profound insights into socio-economic disparities, moral responsibility, and the human capacity for change, themes that resonate powerfully in the context of contemporary geopolitics in 2024. The narrative revolves around Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who embodies the era's capitalist excesses, and his transformative journey prompted by the visitations of three spirits. This tale can be viewed as an allegory for the moral imperatives facing today's global leaders, particularly in a world grappling with inequality, climate change, and the consequences of capitalism. Economic Inequality and Social Responsibility In "A Christmas Carol," Scrooge’s initial indifference to the plight of the impoverished reflects a broader socio-economic divide that is alarmingly prevalent today. As of 2024, the world faces stark economic inequalities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and geopolitical tensions. Wealth concentration among the elite has reached staggering levels, with a significant portion of the global population struggling to meet basic needs. The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals to Scrooge the harsh realities faced by the Cratchit family, particularly Tiny Tim, whose health and future are jeopardized by their poverty. This aspect of the story mirrors contemporary discussions around social safety nets and the need for governments to intervene in markets to ensure equitable access to resources, healthcare, and education. Just as Scrooge is called to acknowledge his moral responsibility to others, today's leaders are similarly challenged to address systemic inequalities and implement policies that foster social welfare. Environmental Concerns and Global Responsibility The spectre of climate change looms large in contemporary geopolitics, echoing the moral awakening experienced by Scrooge. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and greed. In 2024, the planet faces unprecedented environmental challenges, with extreme weather events and biodiversity loss underscoring the urgent need for collective action. Many governments and organizations are grappling with the ethical implications of their environmental policies, much like Scrooge's eventual realization that his actions have far-reaching consequences. The Paris Agreement and subsequent climate accords represent attempts to foster global cooperation, yet the disparity in commitment levels among nations reflects the ongoing struggle between economic interests and moral imperatives. Scrooge’s transformation symbolizes the potential for leaders to evolve from self-interest to a broader commitment to sustainability and stewardship. War, Peace, and Humanitarian Obligations The geopolitical landscape of 2024 is also marked by ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises, from the war in Ukraine to various regional disputes in the Middle East and Africa. The indifference of Scrooge to the suffering around him parallels the apathy of some global leaders toward humanitarian needs. In Dickens' narrative, the moral awakening of Scrooge leads him to philanthropy and community engagement, a lesson that resonates with the contemporary need for nations to prioritize diplomacy and humanitarian aid. As nations grapple with the consequences of war, including displacement and poverty, the call for empathy and action becomes increasingly urgent. Just as Scrooge’s character is redeemed through acts of kindness and generosity, modern leaders are similarly tasked with recognizing their interconnectedness and the moral obligation to assist those in need, regardless of borders. Conclusion In conclusion, "A Christmas Carol" serves as a timeless reflection on the human condition and the responsibilities we hold toward one another. Through the lens of 2024's geopolitical landscape, Dickens' narrative underscores the importance of addressing economic inequality, environmental degradation, and humanitarian crises. The lessons learned by Scrooge are as relevant today as they were in the 19th century, reminding us that true leadership requires compassion, accountability, and a commitment to the common good. Biden & Starmer are playing Russian roulette with your life! (A critical thinking special edition) Black Spy Podcast, Season 17, Episode 0009 This week’s Black Spy Podcast had to be recorded. If one cast one’s mind back two weeks, regular listeners will know that because I feared that the USA, the UK and collectively NATO were effectively goading Russia into nuclear war, I recorded three episodes on the issue. Unfortunately, I’m now explaining how this has got extraordinarily more critical! So, how has this occurred? I postulate that by giving Ukraine a blank cheque, a’ la that given to ‘little’ Serbia that lead to WW1 or frankly, that given by the US to Israel today, nuclear war has become almost inevitable. You see, whenever the tail wags the dog, great damage can be done. Therefore, with the Ukraine sponsored and supported to fire US, UK and possibly French missiles directly on to Russian soil, a line has been crossed that highly likely leads to WW3. In short, I fear for our lives! With Starmer attempting to make the UK relevant post Brexit, by being the bull dog in NATO that allows its personnel to target our Storm Shadow missiles directly at Russian soil; and, with Biden’s Neocon administration desperate to give Trump no choice but to continue propagating the Ukraine war to sustain US Hegemony by hitting Russia with its longer range missiles, miscalculations can easily lead to direct war with Russia. Hence, I highlight to listeners how close we are to the point of no return. This episode explores, analyses and assesses this situation, which in the blink of an eye, could leave hundreds of millions of us in Europe dead; not to mention the USA and possibly many other parts of the world. So don’t be afraid to contact us and put any questions you might have to any of the Black Spy Podcast team concerning this or any other of our episodes. Critical Thinking Return of the Trump! (Part 2) Black Spy Podcast, Season 17, Episode 0008 President Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election so now this week what we needed to concentrate on in part 2 was his choices - vis-a-vis his top governmental team. The team he has chosen since I recorded this episode fills me with disappointment and not a little fear, as many of the team are clear Zionist and even Neocons. Hence, albeit that Trump says he doesn’t want war, his Neocon time may well lead us to war particularly in support of Israel and possibly also against China. So, although we need to wait and see, last weeks right up below is still applicable. Trumps administration, even though Neocon will most likely prioritize a return to Trump’s previous domestic economic policies, emphasizing tax cuts and deregulation to stimulate growth. Trump may reinstate tariffs on foreign goods, particularly targeting China, to protect American industries and reduce trade deficits. This approach could lead to heightened tensions in international trade relations. In foreign policy, Trump has expressed a desire to end U.S. involvement in the Ukraine conflict, advocating for negotiations rather than military support. His stance on Israel may remain supportive of Prime Minister Netanyahu, potentially overlooking the complexities of the Gaza situation while emphasizing Israel's right to defend itself. Trump's administration might adopt a more hands-off approach regarding the West Bank and Palestinian issues, focusing instead on strengthening U.S.-Israel ties. Regarding China, Trump could escalate confrontational rhetoric, particularly concerning Taiwan, as he aims to assert U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific region. However, he may also seek to avoid direct military conflict, preferring economic measures and diplomatic pressure. Overall, Trump’s presidency would likely reflect a blend of nationalism and isolationism, with a focus on American interests while navigating complex global challenges. This is another must listen episode with every angle being assessed, analysed and discussed. So don’t be afraid to contact us and put any questions you might have to any of the Black Spy Podcast team concerning this or any other of our fascinating subject. Surviving the Nuclear Conflict (Part 2) The Black Spy Podcast, Season 17, Episode 0006 The first two episodes in this three series view of nuclear war spoke covered running up to nuclear war and the second episode discussed whereabouts we were on the path towards nuclear war. This week’s and next week episodes are aimed at discussing what will happen if the nuclear missiles actually begin to be fired! The First World War broke out due to competing empires lobbying for power. A waning British Empire sought to maintain its number one position in the world, The Russian Empire, seeking to maintain its position in the East vis-a-vis the Austro-Hungarian Empire, supported Serbia. An industrially expanding German Empire, which had come late to the imperial game, provided Austro-Hungary with a blank check to draw on Germany's resources and military power to hold Serbia and hence Russia in check, limiting Russia's power throughout Eurasia. France, noting with alarm the increasing German power, sought British assistance to outmanoeuvre the German Reich. Hence, when expansion from limited war to an all embracing conflict appeared inevitable; the patch work of alliances still held strong and the various guarantees of mutual support came into play. So, it was, that in July 1914 war on a global scale broke out, as after all, warfare is nothing more than diplomacy by other means as noted by German General Carl Von Clausewitz. In Britain, this war to end all wars, was sold to the masses as a conflict to prevent the expansion of negative forces set on dominating the free world. So the question was, who were these negative forces? In an imperial world, which empire’s subjugation of other peoples and countries, was in any way benign? Where not all empires negative and exploitive? And indeed, by definition, wasn't the biggest empire the most exploitive. Finally, why did these empires believe that the threat of the use of arms against a competing empire/nation, would prevent armed conflict, rather than stoke it? Hence, a hundred years later, we can see the same mechanisms at play as in 1914, only this time, there is one major difference. Any armed conflict between the major powers and their allies, is highly likely to lead to thermonuclear war, thereby threatening the very existence of human kind! Over the next two weeks we will also assess how a nuclear war could/will occur now, and after the nuclear exchange what any post nuclear world will be like. The road to nuclear armageddon The Black Spy Podcast, Season 17, Episode 0004 This week's Black Spy podcast is a continuation of last week's but with the direct reflection on the present situation in the world as we actually travel on a road that almost inevitably leads to thermonuclear war. Hence, last week's explanation of our present situation and the geo-politcs of war still holds true for this week's episode: The First World War broke out due to competing empires lobbying for power. Consequently, this week's Black Spy Podcast continues the theme of how nuclear war could/will occur in the very near future and next week's episode will try to provide an fully assessed view of what the aftermath of a nuclear exchange might well be like. Is mainstream Western media news, often FAKE News? (Part 2) Black Spy Podcast, Season 17, Episode 0002 In this week’s Black Spy podcast Carlton King asks specialist New journalist and PR DAPS Agency boss, Firgas Esack, about the mainstream mass media, its hold on Western citizen’s Weltanschauung and questions whether the media properly undertakes it role as the fourth estate - which in our so called democratic system is meant to hold governments, state bodies and the powerful to account! Dr Rachel Taylor additionally explains how the brain works to the advantage of governments wishing to inculcate their citizens with particular points of view that are favourable to them, their agencies, their leading officials and their billionaire backers. Thereby, fake news' modus operandi is to effectively narcotise the masses who utilise the mass media for information. Finally, in this debate, Carlton also points to the dark arts utilised by governments their intelligence and security agencies and the various other bodies that politicians control to pump their propaganda via the media and other tools to their citizens. In short the Black Spy Podcast asks citizens to think for themselves, to assess situations from an analysed and researched perspective and to dig as deeply as possible into history to gain a full and proper overview of ant situations or conflict. Shocking Truth - How the USA destroyed Germany’s economy! Black Spy Podcast , Season 16, Episode 0007 This week’s Black Spy Podcast is one in Carlton’s series of Critical Thinking and hence, asks a question that for most listeners might appear insane - “Did the United State of American set out to destroy its primary mainland European ally’s economy?” Moreover, Carlton postulates that the Neocon powers that be, will also have considered that by doing this, the US might cause German citizens to seek an alternative form of government which might potentially lead to the demise of the European Union? So is it crazy to think that the US would purposely undermine the primary economic powerhouse of the European continent? Well listen to this week’s Critical Thinking Black Spy Podcast to find out. White Riots! UK on Fire! Are the government and the media to blame? With Dan the Man Black Spy Podcast , Season 16, Episode 0006 This week, Dan the man seeks Carlton’s thoughts on the UK riots that have plagued areas of the UK over the previous month and asks are these riots the consequence of various UK governments and the British mass media creating a climate of hatred and division throughout British society? Dan asks whether UK society and indeed the West have created an everyone against ever one society? Instead of community, there are now communities. Women are against men, gays against, straights, young against old, black against white against brown; religions of all types scapegoated by those with no religion or those with other religions, not to mention rich against poor and the British middle, upper, working class and indeed no class against each other. Moreover, in particular, white men are feeling scapegoated by all, with the so called woke see men, in particular, white middle and upper class men given responsibility for all ills of British society, whilst women have no responsibility. Consequently white working class men deflect all their problems onto the perceived none native citizens of colour or indeed actual non-white immigrants! And finally, and indeed possibly most importantly, bad political actors from the right and left wing (extremist or not), utilise all of the above to form even greater fissures and fractures in British society, to create their aims of White supremist and Nationalist race wars or a revolutionary Socialist nirvana buy utilising Britain’s middle class powers that be to undermine British society. Most importantly, the body tasked with keeping this whole issue in check, the police, are utilised as a political football by all in power. Finally, the previous tactic utilised by police to assess and monitor all of the above groups that would undermine British society is no longer available to the body; which leaves the courts to seemingly control the situation by over sentencing white rioters as a deterrence and hence playing into future white supremacist recruitment.
