Key Text: John 2:13-25

But Jesus on His part did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all people John 2:24 What is the quality of our commitment to Christ?

We may have been accepted into membership by the ‘church’, approved by your friends and entrusted with responsible office but what value are any of these, if our commitment to Christ is such that He is not willing to commit Himself to us? The value of our commitment to Christ, will only be the measure of His commitment to us. (In other words we can say we love and are committed to Jesus but it is only of any value if Jesus Himself is committed to us.) Matthew 10:32-33 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 7:6 Do not give dogs what is holy and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you.’ Jesus refused to be committed to the narrow-minded restricted thinking of His own day and generation; He was not committed to the political situation in Palestine, or to the freeing of the Jewish nation from Roman oppression and rule. He was not committed to the pressing social problems of His time, nor to one faction as opposed to another, any more than today He is committed to the West against the East, or to conservative against Labour (as though either were less wicked than the other!). Christ was not even committed to the needs of a perishing world; It is not that He was indifferent and unmoved by all these other issues but as perfect man, He was committed to His Father and only to that which His Father was committed in Him.

John 15:19 ‘… Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

The basis of His commitment to the Father is the same basis upon which Jesus claims our commitment to Him; you are committed to Him for all that to which He is committed in you exclusively! We are not committed to a church, to a denomination, or to an organisation; We are committed to Christ and for all that to which Christ is committed in us and again I say exclusively!" We commit to Christ not to conform Him to our expectations but in order that we might be committed to His. Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world,[a] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Jesus didn’t need us to bring about His kingdom. He didn’t need our support, our vote, our money or political power. He offered to create the whole thing on His own and then give it to us, if we will do but one thing: create a relationship with Him where we acknowledge that He did it all, we don’t deserve any of it but receive it from Him and give ourselves to Him. What are you committed to? Who are you committed to?
