The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization of survivors of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for its activism against nuclear weapons. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said Friday the award was made as the “taboo against the use of nuclear weapons is under pressure.”

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Florida residents are repairing the damage caused by Hurricane Milton and figuring out what to do next. The storm smashed through coastal communities, tore homes to pieces, flooded streets and spawned a barrage of deadly tornadoes. At least eight people are dead, but many are relieved Milton wasn't worse. The hurricane spared Tampa a direct hit, and the lethal storm surge that scientists feared never materialized. The state’s vital tourism industry is beginning to return to normal. Florida theme parks including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld planned to reopen Friday.

DENVER (AP) — Authorities say one person has been killed and 12 people have been rescued after being trapped for hours about 1,000 feet below ground at a former Colorado gold mine when an elevator malfunctioned at the tourist site.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says his predecessor Donald Trump should “get a life” and try to help people impacted by a pair of devastating hurricanes, rather than spread misinformation about the federal response.

In other news:

  • Blinken tells ASEAN the US is worried about China's 'dangerous' actions in disputed sea.
  • Immigrants brought to the US as children ask judges to keep protections against deportation.
  • Social Security recipients will get a 2.5% cost-of-living boost in 2025, smaller than in recent past.
  • Ethel Kennedy, social activist and wife of Robert F. Kennedy, has died.
  • May trial date set for Sean 'Diddy' Combs to face sex trafficking charges.
  • A former DEA agent is convicted of protecting drug traffickers.
  • Company recalls nearly 10 million pounds of meat and poultry dishes for listeria contamination.
  • US inflation reaches lowest point in 3 years, though some price pressures remain.
  • US jobless claims hit 258,000, the most in a year. Analysts point to Hurricane Helene, Boeing strike.
  • The Yankees advance to the ALCS, the Guardians stay alive against the Tigers, the 49ers were finer than the Seahawks, the Lynx win a Game 1 thriller in the WNBA Finals, and a tennis great serves notice he is retiring.
