Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.
This week I wanted to talk about a subject that is very dear to me - the OSR (aka Old School Renaissance)! Maybe you have heard of it before, or maybe you are a die hard OSR veteran - either way, all are welcome! The OSR is the true beating heart of this hobby (in my humble opinion). A grassroots movement made possible by the OGL, it has only gained steam as time has gone on, and with the continued success of games like D&D 5e and Pathfinder, the community has grown exponentially! If you dare to delve into this niche of the hobby, you will find the wonder and awe that defined much of early D&D and tabletop roleplaying games and made a generation of players fall in love. The OSR has a flavour for anybody and a very active community. In this episode I give an overview of the OSR with the help of the Principa Apocrypha document, partially authored by OSR luminary Ben Milton of Questing Beast and Knave fame!
