This episode is also watchable over on my YouTube channel. Daniel “Rickard Guy” McRorie is a Metis artist and craftsman born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dan’s body of work takes on many forms that include designing and selling T-shirts at age 14 to building custom cars and motorcycles over the long Winnipeg winters, collaborative projects such as a Louis Vuitton wrapped BMX with Nigel Sylvester to fine furniture upholstery with designer Ben Erickson. Dan began working with shoes in 1999 as a cobbler. He worked as an orthotic technician for two years, spent some time in a cowboy boot and roper factory. Daniel built and ran his first shoe repair and custom leather shop in 2004 in Winnipeg, then again in Brooklyn in 2011, and in 2013 co-founded the Brooklyn based Knickerbocker Manufacturing. Dan’s work has been featured in art shows and pop-ups in Winnipeg, Vancouver, New York City, and Philadelphia as well as magazines such as Vogue and Atlas Quarterly. Dan was also honoured to be invited to speak at MoMA during the “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” exhibit. At the time of recording, Dan lives in Philadelphia and continues to create unique one-off pieces in collaboration with other businesses and individuals. In today’s episode, we chat about entrepreneurship, art, and creativity, making big life decisions such as moving to another city, changing careers, etc. If you enjoyed the show, please rate and leave a review.
