Welcome to season 2, episode 23.
This week I am joined by my special guest cohost M. Quentin Williams, Founder and CEO of Dedication to Community. Together we interview Dave Alpern, President, Joe Gibbs Racing. Dave was born in Frankfurt Germany, the son of a high-ranking CIA official. When arriving in the states at two years old his family landed in Northern VA. His plans to pursue an MBA were put on hold when he was offered an unpaid internship at the then startup NASCAR team owned by Coach Gibbs. We talk about when the who you are working for is greater than what you are doing.
Dave has since held every position in the company’s front office. As one of the longest tenured executives in the sport, Dave has worked with senior executives and Ceo's of many of the country’s largest companies. He has been to the white House multiple times after winning NASCAR championships.
Dave is also the author of the book Taking the lead: winning business principles that fuel Joe Gibbs Racing.
In this interview Dave touches on many lessons learned along the way. He shares a bit about dealing with Tourette syndrome. We also discuss how he always remembers how it all started, as an intern working out of a closet as an office without even an outlet for a light or a phone. Listen in to hear how Dave went from unpaid intern to t-shirt guy to President of Joe Gibbs Racing.
Next week my guest is Dennis Miller, Founder and Chairman of DCM Associates, Inc. He is a nationally recognized expert in nonprofit leadership executive search, and a board and leadership performance coach. He wrote the book the book 'Moppin Floors to CEO'. That was Dennis' journey. Listen in to hear more about his incredible story.
