Holiday Season Reflections: Our Problems with Others are Problems within Ourselves
I was sent the perennial question - how to cope with difficult relatives and house guests over the Holiday Season?
The short answer - 'our problems with others are problems with ourselves' is one of my favourite - and most hated - sayings.
Favourite - because it implies and encourages personal responsibility, self-mastery and freedom.
Hated - because it removes the possibility of blaming the other person, and implies investing in difficult personal exploration at times when we might prefer to allocate responsibility elsewhere!
Some of the themes in this Episode:
~ The value of robust resolution of differences in a healthy and growing relationship.
~ How our overwhelming and intolerable negative reactions may signpost our own inner problems.
~ The difference between someone else crossing the line and an over-reaction on our part.
~ Ways to explore stuck negative reactions and find acceptance, resolution and ways forward.
