Who is your podcast for exactly? A lot of us know what we want our show to be about but what a lot of people need to put more thought into is, “who is their show meant for?” and “what kind of audience are you trying to attract and connect with”.

Do you know what their interests are? Do you know what their background is?

Do you know what pain points they may have?

As the saying goes, if you try to help everybody, then you wind up helping nobody… well the same goes for podcasting. But with a little time and insight, you can identify who it is your show is for and enjoy the clarity it provides you when you are planning your episodes and deciding on what kind of value it is you need to offer.

In this episode we will cover:

+The benefits of Identifying your target audience

+Some ideas and exercises that will help you identify your target audience

+The questions you need to be able to answer about your listeners to understand the direction you need to have for your show

Resources talked about in this episode:

How many downloads is considered “good”? How am I performing compared to the rest of the industry? How many downloads should I be getting if I want to be the best? I get these questions a lot, and Id like to break down my answer for you in this episode. Just remember not to compare yourself to shows that are not in your niche In this episode, I talk about: +Industry data on downloads +Where you are compared to your competition +Who NOT to compare yourself to Got Questions? Can everyone see your show in search? Can YOU see your show in search? When you open Spotify or apple, does your podcast even show up? If there was one thing I could change about podcasting, it would be that they would do a better job with their search engine. One of the advantages of YouTube that we dont talk much about is that YouTube is treated as a data base. You can type in a question and get video results. Podcasting is nothing like that, I can ask a question or list a topic and get results that have nothing to do with what I say. So how do we get around this? In this episode, I talk about: +Tips for getting more eyes on your show +The problem with podcast searchability +Why being on YouTube might be an advantage for your show Got Questions? What if you could pick and choose the people you wanted to network with? What if you could prequalify a lead and have a 30-minute relationship-building conversation with them? Would that help your business? Podcasting is an amazing place where you can pick and choose the people you talk with. If you need to meet other professionals who can help you, you can have them on. If you are needing to generate leads for your business, you can have on potential clients and potential partners for other opportunities. The only catch is you need to have a podcast to make it happen. So let me ask you, are you leaving business on the table by not having one? In this episode, I ask Angie about: +The business benefits of having a podcast +How to network as a podcaster +The business that can take place between a well-chosen podcast guest and show host. How do I get to be a guest on another podcast? How do I get invited? How do I find shows that are in front of my target audience and will lead to audience growth? So want to be a guest on another person’s podcast. Be cautious, because there is definitely a right and wrong way to go about doing that. A lot of requests to be a guest on another podcaster’s show go unread and unanswered. The key to getting invited isnt just to stand out, it is also to be short, direct, and respectful of their time. So many podcasters who reach out make it all about “me, me, me”. Lets talk about how to avoid doing that. In this episode, we will talk about: +What is wrong with how a lot of podcasters reach out. +How you can make your request simple and direct while standing out. +The importance of making your request about the show’s audience and not about you. Is it too late to start a podcast? It seems like everyone has a podcast, isnt the market flooded? In the last episode, we talked about how there were around 3 million podcasts available to the public today. In this episode, we are going to talk about how that impacts and how you are not really competing with 3 million podcasts. Only 500K of podcasts are active, and most of those shows dont upload weekly…that means you are only competing with 17% of the 3 million podcasts in existence…and get this, not all of them are targeting the same audience as you. In this episode, we will talk about: +How many active shows there are +Why your show has a chance of rising through the ranks +How consistency is key to winning in this industy Got Questions? How many podcasts are there? Where is the market going? How many active podcasts are there? There is a lot of data out there for podcasting, and in this episode, I do my best to cram the interesting points into a short and sweet episode. Now that is quite an episode for me to want to make, especially given my biases in podcasting, but I save my predictions and own opinions for the end of the episode. If you really want to know what this podcast producer thinks, you'll have to listen through to the end.
