Welcome to the Construction Tales safety topic video series! Written blog content: www.ConstructionTales.com For the MP4 audio version of this podcast episode, head over to the Verbally Disastrous YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/V6Uqa9V4UFw This 36th safety topic being presented is on the subject matter of Beta Max electric hoists and Gar-Bro concrete buckets that are used for high-rise buildings. This topic arose from a recent minor accident on the job while in the middle of a brand-new concrete pour. Thankfully, this accident was minor yet it did require a DOB inspection that resulted in a partial stop work order. The objective of this video series is to share the sequence of events that happened to create the concrete pour accident and the resolution that was required in order to lift the partial stop work order that happened on one of the building scaffolds. Ultimately, I'm sharing with you the root cause of the concrete accident and the matching resolutions that were required in order for the partial stop work order to be eventually lifted. The hoist safety checks and guidelines both prior and during concrete operations while using the electric roof hoist is required. The goal is to provide information and help my crew members go home in the same condition that they came in. Leslie M. Jasper is your narrator for this video. For this podcast episode, I opted to share with you my first (7) weeks as a brand-new New York City DOB Site Safety Manager. I landed on a project where I will learn about installing custom engineered scaffolds. The crazy part is that there will be tenants walking onto the scaffold during the concrete breezeway demolition and re-pour. This is supposed to be a 12–14-month project. I describe the current conditions and a description of my fellow site safety manager co-workers. I'm looking forward to the learning experience. I have been off the grid lately since I just released my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls". This book is available on Amazon in paperback & Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and iTunes. The Audible version is coming very soon. Check out my blog at www.ConstructionTales.com for more information.…

For this podcast episode, I am sharing with you the release of Leslie M. Jasper's first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls". This children's book is about a little girl named Kenna was born into a family where anything is possible. Kenna developed an instant paternal bond with her father, named Sam, at birth. Kenna’s mother, named Marie, watched lovingly as the dynamic duo became even more and more attached to each other over time. Sam spent many years teaching Kenna how to work on cars and trucks in the family garage and at Sam’s truck shop where he worked as a diesel mechanic. Kenna’s little sister, named Susan, stayed back with her mother since she wasn’t interested in working with her hands. Ever since Kenna was a toddler, Sam always told her repeatedly that, since she is smart and strong, she can do anything that she sets her mind to do. As Kenna grew up following her father’s guidance, she realized that she really liked working with tools. Go with Kenna on this life path as she grows up and follows the career path of where her talents lie. Kenna joined the military and made a non-traditional career choice with her father’s love and encouragement the entire time. The goal of this book is to inspire boys and girls to allow their natural talents to guide them into their career paths and life goals. Gather the courage to chase those dreams even in the face of doubts from others around them in society. After all, it is your life to live and choices to make. You can do it because you are talented, smart, and strong! This book can be found on iTunes, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble in paperback and e-book. For this episode, Leslie discusses the era where she juggled raised her two sons, Tom and Johnny, along with her career path as a union journeywoman electrician in New York. Leslie speaks about her biggest challenges as well as many lessons learned and developed talents she picked up as a single mother. As a very young widow, Leslie was forced into working 120/hours a week, via multiple jobs. This was in addition to finishing her college business degree and 5-years of electrical theory training that were a part of her apprenticeship. This topic was suggested by a young, working professional mother. The objective of this podcast episode is to inform as to what is involved and offer encouragement to men and women who are currently in the single parent era. For more information and to suggest topics, head over to the website at www.ConstructionTales.com. This is Part B of the two-part discussion and the last half of the chat. Look for Part A, in the podcast platform of your choice, to start the discussion in case you missed it.…

Leslie is kicking off Season #2 with this podcast episode about early lessons learned while she was an apprentice electrician back in the 1990’s. Additionally, she shares descriptions of a few unusual characters along the way. Leslie also shares her experience with facing gender discrimination as well as witnessing prejudice against her minority brothers and sisters in the trade. Leslie shares that sexual harassment was just an accepted behavior on the job if she wanted to be there. Leslie learned to develop thick skin and a wicked sense of humor to combat any form of harassment. Apologies if you detect a rough voice since Leslie has been ill with congestion and speaking has been a challenge. Leslie also warns about freely sharing personal information since it can become the source of jobsite rumors on the job site. This is Part C of a 3-part discussion with my friend and fellow journeyman electrician, Brian Reyes. Brian works on photography, in his spare time, under his website that is entitled, “Photacular Imagery”. For the past few years, Brian has been signing the visitor book as a traveling Local #3 IBEW NYC journeyman out in unions throughout vast parts of California. The union traveling term for a visiting electrician has been known as a “tramp”. Therefore, Brian shares with me about the vast cultural differences between New York and California and his traveling stories and his struggles to find simple home comforts such as New York style pizza. In this podcast episode, I also discussed with Brian about his work adventures with fellow traveling journeyman; many were also from the Bronx, Texas, Chicago, and many locations throughout the Midwest and even Californians. Additionally, I asked him to share some of his funniest and scariest stories during his +20-year career as an electrician. We even got into a brief discussion on the evolution of thick skin, a survival technique, that was used to navigate racist old-timers. This is the third part of a discussion that I had with Brian. If you missed the first or second third of the discussion, look for either Part A and/or Part B in the podcast platform of your choice to start the discussion. This is Part C that is intended to finish the final third of the discussion. Check out my website at: www.ConstructionTales.com for more information.…

For this podcast episode, Leslie decided to share with you on how she shifted, as an apprentice, to begin working on railroad projects for most of her career. Prior to working on brand-new deck jobs, commercial renovation projects, and railroad platform phase projects, Leslie was being groomed for low voltage projects. During the first few years of her apprenticeship, Leslie was becoming a "data fairy" and needed to switch it up. As a female in a male-dominated field, Leslie knew that she needed to both push herself and leadership to allow her to step out and work on the hardest projects as an electrician in order to become more well-rounded. The worst thing for Leslie was the fear of not obtaining the necessary skills during her 5-1/2 year apprenticeship. Without the necessary skills, a worker ends up always becoming the first person on a layoff when a job winds down and requires less manpower. Always being on the first layoff translates into not having enough financial means to feed your family. Leslie shares some job stories that are either/both funny and scary in nature from working on the railroad and outside. For more information, check out the website at: www.ConstructionTales.com This is Part B and the last half of the discussion. If you missed Part A, head back into the podcast platform of your choice and start the first half of the discussion.…

For this episode, Melissa and I had a discussion on a risque topic. This podcast episode is Part B and the last half of the discussion that is intended for adults only. Melissa and I decided to chat vaguely about our one-night stands that we managed to get in on during our lifetime. Our random encounters, over the past 30-years, appear to very spicy, unexpected, and humorous in nature! As older women, it is interesting to discuss a topic I would have shied away from when I was younger. We also spoke about other situations that we either witnessed or experienced as well as various current events. If you are looking for the first part of the discussion, look for Part A in the podcast platform of your choice. For more information, head over to the website at: www.ConstructionTales.com.…

For this episode, I was finally able to get a hold of my long-time, close pal and fellow electrician Don Raffa. Don opted to create a 40-year career as a highly-demanded high voltage splicer throughout Westchester County, New York and nearby areas in the event of an emergency. Don was quite possibly in every man hole throughout Westchester. He enjoyed his time while working with the tools as a retiree. I asked quite a few questions that I would think the listeners would want to know. Yes, there is a squeaky chair in the background that adds character to the story. If there is a popular demand, I will have him come back on in the future with questions from the audience, if applicable. This Part B of the discussion. Look for Part A to start the discussion on his high voltage career in case you missed the first half.…

I apologize for a delay in releasing this episode. I have been rather busy lately. For this episode, I am sharing with you my path on working to earn my NYC DOB Site Safety Manager license. A site safety manager is the head of safety on a project. I am sharing what I used to study and the exams that I needed to take as well as professional memberships. This episode to geared to guide others who desire to work on this process or give the listener a perspective of what this process is like as an observer on the outside. I also offer a list of lessons I wish I knew prior to embarking on this journey. I have my own homemade study guides on my Leslie M. Jasper YouTube channel. Head over to my blog/website at www.ConstructionTales.com . I will share a quick reference material for anyone interested in this process or one similar.…

In this episode, I explain why I have not released a podcast episode in a few weeks. I share my experience of being flooded during a flash flood that was a result of Hurricane Ida in Queens, NYC. I shared the current struggles with the aftermath of the hurricane. I shared some flood videos on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube Channel. Head over to my blog at www.ConstructionTales.com for more information.…

In this episode, I take you back in time to my earlier years when I worked with the tools in the New York suburbs. I shared some funny stories of that happened on the job with my fellow co-workers. I also shared stories on one of the worst electrical apprentices I have ever crossed paths with in my career. The guy, nicknamed Lucky, earned the nickname on the job as an apprentice. Lucky was missing manual dexterity, depth perception, and had two left feet. He was an Olympic athlete going for gold in the Worker’s Compensation claims arena. We were all worried about him hurting himself, again, and others nearby. Despite sounding like he was a lucky man, it appeared to be quite the opposite. He had very distinct characteristics where you can recognize who he is, from a mile away, as he hobbled onto the jobsite. Nope, I am not politically correct. You are either going to laugh your ass off or be really pissed off at me. Choose wisely grasshopper. For more information, head over to my website at www.ConstructionTales.com.…

In this episode, I share a recent collaboration between Leslie M. Jasper, from the Verbally Disastrous Podcast, and Rick Horne from the Piggly Dogg Podcast. I am sharing this recently released interaction that can be found on the back of the Piggly Dogg episode entitled, “Can’t Buy Me A Job” that was released on August 8, 2021. Rick graciously honored my request and offered me the episode clip with both of us. Therefore, I am able to share this funny exchange between us with you. Mrs. Canatuna is complaining on a voicemail to Meat Man, at the Piggly Dogg grocery store, about his bad meat and the ghastly things that happened to her lodge patrons. Meat Man responds to Mrs. Canatuna’s complaints in his own hilarious manner. Go check out Piggly Dogg on Spotify and various other podcast platforms that can be found on the Piggly Dogg hosting platform at Anchor.fm. I can’t forget to include the Piggly Dogg YouTube channel. Let us know if you enjoyed this episode clip and want us to continue our battle about bad meat!? Yes, I am the double entendre queen and I had a tremendous amount of fun working with Rick on this project! For more information, head over to my website at: www.ConstructionTales.com.…

In this episode, on a Sunday afternoon, I passed the microphone around in the group to bounce back and forth a wide variety of topics. In this second section, the main theme is the the importance of trying to find a decent partner to start a family. The ladies share their various past experiences and try to both warn and inform my two sons about different stages of dating. I appreciate that Donna often took the reins in this discussion. Donna gives her perspective on navigating life as a woman who didn’t marry nor have children. She also shares about how you lose your friends at different life stages. Donna shares that she has discovered the power of going on adventures solo and meeting new random people along the way. Amongst the group, we have my co-host Melissa, our pal Donna, and my two sons Tom and Johnny. We try to understand each other's current view in life on dating and relationships. This is Part B and the last half of the discussion. For more information, head over to www.constructiontales.com.…

In this episode, Leslie is your host while she takes on you a journey through her eyes to see what it was like to work as a pregnant electrician in construction back in 2004 to 2005 in New York. Leslie made the choice to expand her family, back in 2005, when she welcomed a 8 lb., 3 oz. baby boy named Johnny. Today, Johnny is a 16-year-old active teenager who is working on finishing high school and then moving onto college to become a future electrical engineer. Leslie shared how she tried to hide her pregnancy as long as possible in order to keep working while dodging discrimination. She also shares stories of different jobsites, co-workers and peers, and the various challenges she faced along the way. We do not recommend that you work as far along as Leslie did during her pregnancy or tackle the various hazards faced while on the job. Leslie gave an overview of what it was like for a pregnant woman to have toxemia over 16-years ago. Always speak with your obstetrician and follow the physician’s orders to ensure a safe labor and delivery for both mother and baby. If a triggering discussion, enter this episode at your own discretion and risk. Check out the website www.ConstructionTales.com for more information.…

This podcast episode is about our Friday to Saturday adventure where Melissa and I decided to take a ride up and check out the town of Newport, Rhode Island. We drove up early on a Friday morning and strolled the Cliff Walk, checked out the shops, some beaches, and ocean front mansions along the way. After checking into our run-down hotel, we discovered that a plunger was required to be used after each flush. Booking.com sure got a scathing review because of this disappointing experience. I have a video of Melissa pissed off plunging the toilet on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel. Once we were done plunging the toilet, we stepped out to visit some pubs, downtown along Broadway, for dinner and drinks. We got to socialize with some locals and tourists alike. Shout out to the bartenders at the Fastnet Pub in Newport for putting up with us! Melissa opted to record our newly discovered pub friend Bobby. She asked and was granted permission to record his drunken antics. Our new pal we discovered was very funny already with his delivery and observations about life. As the evening progressed, Bobby became even more drunk, incoherent, and an absolute rambling mess! Eventually, Bobby’s sister came into the bar to persuade him to go home and stop embarrassing himself and the family. I have the audio clips, from this podcast episode, also posted to the Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel. Check out this episode to get a few laughs and experience Newport in July vicariously through us.…

Leslie hosts this episode on the time she had gotten into an altercation with a dude. This challenge happened on a large project in Stamford, CT back in 2007. She shares what goes on during a brand new job coming out of the ground. Leslie introduces some co-workers and foreman during the build-up to the showdown between trades. This episode is dedicated to a fellow journeyman we lost this year, Scott Gross. He is gone way too soon. May he RIP and his family find comfort and healing.…

Leslie is your host in this episode. She dives into how a person finds their voice, some jobsite stories, and advice given to teens as they grow up with her son. Leslie gives a snapshot of what it is like navigating around construction jobsite humor as well as strategies for coping with jobsite "ball busting". This topic came up as a blog post and inspiration from a question on Quora. The post is intended to offer advice while diving into speculation on how to acquire one's voice and lose the fear of speaking up. Head over to my blog/website at: www.ConstructionTales.com for more content and information.…

Your host Leslie shares some funny stories from when she worked with the tools earlier in her career as a journeywoman electrician in New York. Leslie discusses some crazy job antics amongst her crew, coworker personalities, as well as interactions with both correctional officers and inmates while working at the Westchester County Jail almost a decade ago. The work crew was responsible for installing cameras throughout the entire jail. It is with these stories; you get an idea of what it was like for a woman to work while behind bars within a male-dominated trade. Leslie is the author of the book entitled, Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey To Become An Electrician on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Audible. These short stories belong to the ongoing #ConstructionTales book series. For more information, head over to the website at www.ConstructionTales.com and check out further content.…

Your host Leslie reviews a Tedx Talk, hosted by attorney Marilyn York, YouTube video entitled, " What Representing Men in Divorce Taught Me About Fatherhood ". This Tedx Talk presentation was delivered by family law practice attorney Marilyn York from Reno, Nevada. Ms. York shares several lessons learned during her +20-years of practicing law, on behalf of fathers that are going through divorce, within her family-owned law firm. Ms. York is joined by another nine women lawyers who exclusively represent over 650 fathers, since 2001, in family court. Her law firm believes that men are the "underdog" in family court and crucial in the development of rearing children. Leslie maps out the lessons learned in this presentation while offering her thoughts on the importance of fathers in a child's life. As a daddy's girl growing up, Leslie wholeheartedly believes in the importance of a father's role in a child's evolution through childhood. She learned powerful lessons from her father that would have never been taught by her mother. This podcast is in honor of Father's Day that was observed last weekend. For more information, head over to the website at www.ConstructionTales.com and look for this blog post and YouTube video link to the Tedx Talk.…

This episode was hosted solely by Leslie. Leslie opted to discuss this Tedx Talk that she watched awhile ago on YouTube. Yes, her topics swing wildly from side to side. Leslie does not like to look at only one angle ever. She is very open minded and willing to evolve with her thought process if it seems to be logical in nature. Leslie reviewed a YouTube video entitled, "Meeting The Enemy" that was presented by filmmaker Cassie Jaye. Cassie walked into a project with one line of thinking and walked out totally evolved. Leslie shares the take away points as well as her opinion on the topic.…

I hope for better episodes moving forward. We invited special guests Juana and Vanessa to discuss their choice to not have children. This is Part B and the last half of the discussion. Melissa and I also give a snapshot into our earlier lives as mothers of young children. This topic was chosen from the list as per Episode #2: Upcoming Podcast Topics to discuss. In this episode, Leslie speaks about how she initially felt compelled to avoid fellow trade women in an effort to avoid tarnishing her budding reputation as an electrician apprentice back in the 1990's. There was a tremendous amount of pressure in the beginning to work harder than her male peers, strictly stay on task, focus, and avoid anyone perceived as a threat to the working reputation. She has evolved since the early days and has embraced her role as a mentor and guide to anyone in need. This podcast episode attempts to explain how Leslie perceived the early years of her trade, personal challenges faced, along with the evolution of her career path over the past 28 years.…

In honor of Women's History Month, I put together a slide show of a handful of women who were early pioneers in construction. The video has been loaded to YouTube: https://youtu.be/y5QgKC3sUW4 My choice to research these women stemmed from an overheard discussion where a man was challenging a woman and claimed that there were no women contributors to the creation of modern society. The woman could not respond with some women's names. Knowledge yields such power. The early women I researched include: Zaha Hadid, Solveig Erikstad, Edith Clarke, Lillian Ann Baumbach-Jacobs, Deanna Dunlevy, and Josephine Striano. I also found the first union female carpenter, back in 1935, Margaret Ellings. I discovered Dawn Gladwin as Ikea's first female, from UK & Ireland, carpenter. I also read about a group of women tradeswomen who worked on Altit Fort that sits in Hunza Valley in Pakistan back in 2003-2009. The leader of the non-profit group Ciqum is Aqueel Bano as well as the first female carpenter Amina Bibi who came from the Ciqum group. I hope to carve out time for next year's 2022 Women's History Month to honor and showcase even more women. All of these women made history with their contributions to the construction industry throughout the globe.…

I got together with my two sons, special guests Tom and Johnny, to discuss a wide variety of topics. 15-yearl old Johnny wanted us to talk about content from YouTube channels James Freeman and Audit the Audit. We discussed Jessa Reed's comedy stand-up skit discussing meth urine. We talked about construction since my eldest son Tom followed my career path to become an apprentice electrician. The boys have their own viewpoints and are not afraid to discuss and disagree with me.…

We try each one together and offer our opinions. We had an unexpected mishap with the dirty cookie shots. This was a fun episode.…

Ms. Brown became a viral sensation after sharing her problem on Tik Tok in an effort to get a solution. Melissa and I discuss her wild ride in this episode.…
