1 S6 Ep67: Dr. Antonia O. Franco Chief Operating Officer and President of Digital Nest Is Helping To Create Economic Equity through Technology Skill Centers 38:18
Our 6th season opens up a deeper conversation, regarding higher education, community and resources for the next generation of workforce for our Latine Youth. Our guest is Dr. Antonia O. Franco, COO and President of DigitalNest.org . D r. Antonia O. Franco’s career spans nearly thirty years of executive and management experience in the nonprofit, philanthropic and government sectors advancing access, equity and a voice to marginalized communities. She has worked extensively on leading organizational change, creating strategic partnerships and community building, and scaling the work of programs, initiatives and organizations. She oversees the programmatic and operational initiatives that support the scaling efforts spanning the five rural communities of Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Modesto and Stockton . Dr. Antonia and I discuss her inspiring journey into higher education, through perseverance and by highlighting the pivotal role her family, community support, and how she saw that representation matters. If you can see it, you can be it. Growing up in an agricultural community in Arizona, Dr. Franco's story is a testament to the power of nurturing curiosity and providing opportunities for young people to envision and achieve their aspirations. Dr. Franco and I discuss the current lack of diversity in tech and educational leadership and stress the importance of motivating more of our Latine community to pursue careers in education, technology and the STEM industries. By showcasing various career paths, organizations like Digital Nest are guiding young people toward building economic equity by fulfilling impactful careers by utilizing tech and helping them into their first career within tech organizations. We both emphasize how important it is to pay it forward to our future generations by the change we are setting in motion through organizations, such as Digital Nest and by using this podcast platform to lift our voices. We are delighted to have Dr. Antonia O. Franco and the Digital Nest team help make this audio production also as a recorded live video episode, which you can watch in full length on our YouTube Channel, at Latinasb2b and subscribe to follow us on longer content videos. 1 S5 Ep66: Pride and Progress With Deputy Director of Equality Illinois Mony Ruiz Velasco on LGBTQ+ Rights and Challenges 47:30
Our special guest, Mony Ruiz Velasco - Deputy Director of Equality Illionios, and proud queer Latina, wife and mother who shares her extensive experience as a human rights advocate and attorney, emphasizing the importance of continued advocacy and visibility for LGBTQ+ communities. In this episode we reflect on her personal journey growing up in Mexico and South Texas, and her commitment to making it easier for future generations to find support and acceptance, as many young Latine LGBTQ+ youth don't feel safe or supported. The conversation underscores the importance of providing an inclusive environment, to feel safe in expressing their identities, especially for LGBTQ Latine youth and within our communities of color, who experience higher rates of verbal assault, physical violence, homelessness and suicidal thoughts compared to their peers. We also discuss and celebrate significant legislative victories, such as the requirement for LGBTQ history to be taught in schools, showcasing the resilience and vibrancy of the LGBTQ community, such as the Stonewall riots, the ACT UP movement and learning how to find community and resources. The significance of voting this year is not over-hyped nor should be sidelined, as over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been initiated, and some advanced into law, to ban books, advance incarceration sentencing and deny access to healthcare for LGBTQ+ youth, which significantly impacts marginalized communities of color. With the stakes so high in this election year, the impact of state bills that aim to undermine our freedoms and civil rights will significantly create a humanitarian crisis over the next few years. We highlight the need for community unity and the role of truth in combating these challenges. We are so thankful to have truth sources, such as Mony and the representation of Equality Illinois on our podcast, to continue our needed education and resources to keep communities safe. 1 S5 Ep65: Professor Fatima K. Espinosa Vasquez: Unveiling the Complexities of Technology and Community Activism 48:14
Fatima Espinoza Vasquez. Ph.D. Associate Professor University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information School of Information Science will share with us her dedication to leveraging Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for positive social change, which originated from a panel conversation from the Latina Futures Symposium created by the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center and the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute earlier this year, to bridge a conversation across our social media usage, AI for businesses and also for political misinformation. Fatima's roots in Honduras and her role at the American embassy during the tumultuous events of 9-11 gave her a profound insight into the significance of information management. She shares with us her pivotal moments that helped reshaped her perception of technology—from an initial optimism about its universal benefits to a more critical awareness of the power dynamics and societal influences that mold its use and to holds and harnesses the access. In the heart of our conversation, Fatima shed light on digital inequity, making a vital distinction from the oft-cited digital divide. She argued that digital inequity goes beyond mere access to technology—it is deeply intertwined with broader social structures such as race, gender, immigration status, and economic conditions. Illustrating this point, she brought up inspiring cases like rural Argentine communities creating digital infrastructures through cooperatives, challenging the normative corporate grip on technological advancement. Join us in learning how communities learn how they have power to leverage digital knowledge and infrastructure within their own communities. 1 S5 Ep64: The Legacy of Leadership: Ella Baker's Influence on Modern Advocacy With Executive Director Marlene Sanchez 40:54
We are incredibly honored to host Marlene Sanchez, the Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. As the Executive Director of theElla Baker Center for Human Rights, Marlene is a proud San Francisco native, and Chicana, where she has spent more than 20 years building power with youth and formerly incarcerated people. Through her work, Marlene has created pathways to invest in the leadership of people directly impacted by the criminal legal system and helped center the voices of young people to bring youth justice. For the past decade, she has helped pass policies focused on youth justice, reproductive justice, LGBTQ discrimination, police accountability, and sentencing reform. Marlene came to community work at age 15 looking for employment and a way out of the juvenile justice system. She is the result of change through a resourced community. In this episode, we discuss how incarceration breaks families and communities apart and it’s not the answer to keeping communities safe. The United States prison system has the highest incarcerated population of brown and black men , and the legacy of prison systems stems from slavery and economic exploitation that this country was built upon. ( Author, Nicole Hannah Jones mentions within the first chapters of her book, The 1619 project, ) By holding accountability of elected officials, for housing, jobs and healthcare, instead of increasing funding to police and prison job creations, the Ella Baker Center has created impactful policy reform, recognizing their instrumental role in the passage of the Racial Justice Act. As we transition to the crucial topic of voting rights, we spotlight the advocacy groups like All of Us or None and Initiate Justice, tirelessly championing the electoral voice of the incarcerated. Ella Baker herself was the champion of civil rights and justice by fighting racisim and organizing the first non-violent youth movements, for the civil rights movement and championing our power to vote. Marlene shares with us an open invitation to join the Ella Baker Center's newly launched membership program, starting May 22nd, here in Oakland California and online, to provide opportunities for you to participate or support their upcoming political organizing initiative and “Get The Vote Out” training programs for the summer of 2024. Marlene is a testament to the power of community activism in shaping a democracy that truly represents us all. Gracias Marlene.…

Today, we're joined by the creative and innovative founder of Nopalera , Sandra Lilia Velazquez. Sandra takes us on a journey through a powerful narrative of embracing Chicana identity , to her band Pistolera , to crafting beauty products with the Mexican cactus, the Nopal, that encapsulates Mexican heritage. The Nopal cactus isn't just a plant; it's a testament to the untapped potential within Latino communities, as we, Latinos, know how utilize the entire Nopal: From The pads, which have medicinal purpose in being cooked, to the yummy “tunas” the reddish/purple fruit that grow from the cactus pads that you can eat! But Sandra’s mission for Nopalera is clear: to be bold and worthy of luxury. Together, we discuss how we can elevate Latino goods in the marketplace, much like the esteemed European luxury brands, and to ensure these products evoke the respect and value they deserve from consumers. It’s about self worth, as we clearly saw in her famous SharkTank episode , and her pivotal start up journey, where the challenges of learning the operational ropes with technology and trademarks, demonstrated her resilience in entrepreneurship. Overall, she presents a passionate appeal to all listeners to support Nopalera's mission, by showing the power of customer advocacy in shaping a brand's success-We need to ask for the products where we shop, such as Ulta and Sephora, the higher end retailers where we see other European beauty and bath products. We belong there too. Sandra's story is one of resilience, identity, and the bold spirit of entrepreneurship to change our narrative. If you would like more information about Nopalera, you can visit their website at Nopalera.co and if you would like to learn more about Sandra, you can visit her website, which is full of valuable information, you can go to Sanda Lilia Velazquez.com Highlights: (06:57 - 07:23) The Ordinary Nopal in Everyday Life (09:40 - 10:41) Community Power Dominates Brand Influence (16:48 - 18:11) Latinas in Leadership and Ownership (21:08 - 22:06) Importance of Business Licensing and Trademarks (26:19 - 26:45) Cost of Learning the Hard Way (34:57 - 36:04) Empowering Latinas in Corporate Leadership Connect with Latinas From The Block To The Boardroom Website: www.latinasb2b.com YouTube @Latinasb2b Join newsletter: www.latinasb2b.com Facebook: @Latinasb2b.marketing Instagram: @Latinasb2b X.com : @LatinasB2B Podcast Executive production by Theresa E. 1 S5 Ep58: Nancy Flores Founder of Cultura Media and Austin Vida for journalism that centers the voces of Austin’s comunidad 41:12
Nancy Flores, former journalist of the American Austin Statesman, founder of Cultura Media and Editor and Publisher of Austin Vida , and I discuss how do Latinos find trusted news sources within our communites especially after Covid-19 and the election of 2020. Before the pandemic hit and the elections of 2016, local news resources began to disappear, leaving many community members vulnerable to fake information through social media and ROBO calls of false information of voting by mail, due to a lack of local news resources, that left many rural and suburban areas as News Deserts. However, Nancy is changing this narrative by creating trust and transparency from her community by asking the community what they want to hear and see and then by sharing through her platform of local news and cultura, Austin Vida a bilingual digital news platform. Nancy has won numerous awards , including the HABLA (Hispanic Business Advocates Business Leaders of Austin) and LION (Local Independent Online News Publishers Local Journalism Awards) Awards in Austin, TX. Austin Vida is growing and looking for your support online! Let’s support more local news outlets in the coming 2024 election year and beyond! How do you build a technology platform from the ground up with music as your first passion? Getting to point A to point B is what Patrick Hill is doing with his new engagement platform, Disctopia, for content creatives and content owners to drive engagement and monetization. From his experience of 15 years in technology design, mar-tech, and internal communication software development, and from those around him in the community, he saw how folks can set their price on what they see as value for their content. 1 S5 Ep56: Women Building Socio Economic Change in Puerto Rico. Verónica Colón Rosario Executive Director of Fundación de Mujeres en Puerto Rico 41:40
Veronica Colon Rosairio. Executive director of Fundacion de mujeres en Puerto Rico was founded by women in the Diaspora and within Puerto Rico, which promotes social justice and supports the economic security, safety, health, reproductive autonomy and general empowerment of women, girls and gender-fluid individuals in Puerto Rico. Why is this so important? The women and outer communities of PR have continuously been left on the margins, particularly women, since colonial times of the island and it has been a corporate tax free haven to exploit folks and keep them in poverty. Think Hawaii 2.0. After Hurricane Marie hit her home country of Puerto Rico , Veronica went back home to leverage her US top tier educational background, with an 11 year career within a Washington, DC think tank, to help rebuild the country through an ecosystem of non-profits creating an entrepreneurial environment to help communities see ownership and organizing women at the forefront to lead a new transformation of Puerto Rico. Veronica and I discuss the importance of this new leadership and a socio-economic change for women to be at the forefront due to the history of Puerto Rico and the US relationships over the years. Particularly the big corporations and Pharma which has had a long history of creating clinical trials with the first birth control pills tested on Puerto Rican Women which were hugely controversial and was also known as The Pill Trials to lead into the first testing distribution of Opioids in Puerto Rico. The history of Puerto Rican people has long been colonized by Spain and the US by creating more profits to the wealthy since the early 1900’s as per this documentary we refenced call “La Operacion '' which at minute 7, is where we see the economic displacement begin of the farming communities and lower income neighborhoods, then by sterilizing women to control the populations. There is a lot to unpack in this episode, but the goal is to start discussions of our histories that are slowly being erased and how these policies of colonization, which clearly opened our eyes to the concept through social media with Gaza and Israel, has long been a thing here in the US starting with the Indigenous populations. It’s time to start healing and moving forward by learning more and advocating for those that are not resourced to live humanely. By providing women leadership and entrepreneurial skills to help rebuild communities, creates a pathways for the right investments getting to the people that need them the most, not to those who profit from the land ownerships and corporations that feed the broken policies of Puerto Rico. It’s time for us, women of color and our allies, to invest in social equity that builds communities into better women’s healthcare and a new economic sustainable society for future generations. For context in this episode, we referenced the Madrigal sisters which is in reference to the Madrigal ten, which was a legal case of Madrigal v. Quilliga n in Los Angeles California from the 1970’s challenged the forced sterilzation of latina women without their consent. But this is not anything new, and can not be forgotten, just as UnidosUS provides us with more information and context on forced sterization of Latinas here that is also happening in ICE detention centers. Today, we are going to hear from CiCi Rojas, 1st Latina in the 171-year history of YMCA of the USA to serve as Chair, National Board of Directors!! Congratulations! CiCi shares her DYI experience as a mother of 4 children, and college graduate, that by leveraging her Spanish, gave her the confidence to build alliances to work within Kanas City as a car salesman, to becoming the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President in Dallas, Texas! The work into the boardroom she says, " was building my confidence to saying yes, put me in this role, I can do it!" which opened up more opportunities and also sponsorship into leadership roles. CiCi also mentions how sponsorship is just as important as mentorship, but the difference is this... "that people advocating for you as leader, while you're not in the "room," is someone who is really going to the line for you." WOW! CiCi's tenacity lead to her building a multicultural marketing agency, Tico Productions and Sports, for professional sports media to be broadcasted in Spanish for the NFL, MLB, and Hockey. She says, "this is the wake up call for all sports agencies on and off the field through technology and media regarding the Latino population." Understanding the importance of saying "yes!" to building community, sports advocacy for youth and creating important healthcare business alliances gave CiCi the opportunity to be the 1st Latina in history for this role as National Board Chair for YMCA of the USA. Thank you CiCi, for breaking a 171-year-old glass ceiling leading into the boardroom of the Y's national resource office here in the U.S.. In this episode, we discuss the power of healing the belief systems that we have grown up with as Latinas to help us pursue our dreams without guilt. Denise Soler Cox, a first generation talking to a third generation, Theresa E. Gonzales , who both grew up in the United States, discuss the guilt and shame that is often tied to our cultural norms if we don't speak fluent Spanish or we want bigger career opportunities to leave our home and cities. Our identities to our Latinidad culture is everything to us, but to our families and to our culture, being selfish in wanting more is sometimes seen as "whiteness" or betrayal, not greatness. We discuss how our power is tied to our culture and the opportunities we are provided here in the US, and as Latina women, we are stronger together when we can heal from the past by sharing our stories. Noelle Silver has been in the tech ecosystem for over 20 years and an AI executive at IBM. We discuss how technology companies are reaching new AI based product designs but still not being inclusive of communities that make up a third of the population that uses all technology products. How do you build for the future when the door is not open wide enough for community members to be on the product teams or when the C-Suite layers of leadership are not diverse to be considered inclusionary on product design. Gael and I connected at Podcast Movement Evolutions in Los Angeles, March 2022, and talked about how podcasting has been making an impact into our communities. I wanted to learn more about his podcast, Teenager Therapy and the collaboration began. Gael Aitor, host of Teenager Therapy started his podcast before Covid-19 at the age of 15, with his friends, because he saw the power of social media technology at a very young age to leverage connection for teenagers who needed to talk about what they were experiencing and what they like talking about in their social circles. Gael and his co-hosts created a talking space for teenagers to not feel alone, to laugh, to connect while being at home for months during Covid-19! Gael, now 18 years of age, and I also discuss how Generation Z is the going to be the latest generation to up-end all things that we know today in marketing, technology and health. Gael tells us that this journey is not a one time thing for him and his Teenager Therapy co-hosts, who are continuing the conversations post Covid-19. 1 S3 Ep34: 25 years as a Latino Owned IT Services Family Business, Principal Michelle Londoño shares how "Supporting the small business community is an extension of our family values." 34:14
Latinas From The Block To The Boardroom podcast is very excited to share this Small Business Week 2022 collaboration podcast, with Proactive Network Consulting . As a Latina from New York City, Michelle Londoño , wife, mother of 3 children and principal of Proactive Network Consulting services of San Francisco, shares with us how her entrepreneurial journey started by her grandmother immigrating from Colombia. She tell us the unexpected journey of transferring her nursing skills that she acquired through USF, here in the Bay Area, into a skill set to help her husband, Lawrence Flores , start and keep an IT services company growing for the next 25 years. How she managed to support her family and business clients through some of the most disruptive times, and for any small business, relied on the family values that she grew up with through her grandmother, her strong partnership with her husband and her nursing education. As we discussed in this podcast with Michelle, and in previous podcasts with Latinas who are building and or working in technology companies, the skill level for technology knowledge is absolutely a new requirement in any job market or small business. Today, many small businesses struggle to keep up their knowledge of new technology applications or platforms that can help support their small business and it can be overwhelming. This is where a small IT services firm, such as Proactive Network Consulting can help and they offer technology assessment services. As we are in the month of May for Small Business Week, it's also graduation time. Now is a great time for any college grad to look into a small business IT services firm as an entry way to start a new profession. 1 S3 Ep33: Founder and Social Justice Attorney, Monica Ramirez of Justice for Migrant Women, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, Co-Founder of Poderistas and The Latinx House is amplifying the Latinx… 53:16
Monica Ramirez, Activist Organizer, Founder of Justice For Migrant Women , and Co-Founder of Poderistas, The Latinx House and Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, talks to us through her journey that inspired her to ask questions at a very young age to her migrant farm working parents, “why are farm workers not celebrated when it's time to work in the fields, but fisherman in our town are welcomed back with celebration?” She pursued that question to become “ The Voice of The People” in her hometown newspaper at the age of 14 when someone gave her that shot to write a column that would give visibility to the farm workers who came every year. What started as her curiosity and passion for writing, led her to her life’s purpose as the daughter of migrant parents to be a social justice attorney for migrant farm workers and her projects, “The Humans That Feed Us” and her 15 year anniversary of “ The Bandana Project” . Monica has also created pathways for change to the way Latinx is seen within the larger media lens, through The Latinx House and Poderistas, which has created a powerful advocacy circle of Latinas in Hollywood, such as America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, and Alexandria-Martinez Kondrake. As April is known as Sexual Assualt Awareness Month, (SAAM), she tells us of her protest letter for Time’s Up Movement, which was later published in Time Magazine as “Dear Sisters” that became the reached into Hollywood's storytelling foundations, such as Sundance and Netflix, that will be creating more open door opportunities for the Latinx community to be the writers and producers of our own stories. We need to tell our own stories, and now is our time. Monica is listed on Time’s 100 list for 2021 and she is bringing us all with her. In this episode, we discuss heading into the 2024 elections and communities most at risk, and how we can not afford to stand on the sidelines. Raising awareness of the unseen in our communities, giving voice to the power of movements are creating unbelievable change within US policies and new technology that big media does not cover or follow. Podcasting our local movements and community initiatives has created a “boots on the ground” medium, with the change makers of tomorrow. This also builds our voices on the future of AI, which will represent us in more empowering light when prompted correctly. Closing out our season 4 with Elsie Escobar from She Podcast and Libsyn's "The Feed" podcast! Elsie is a podcasting pioneer with 17 plus years as a podcaster, El Salvadoran immigrant, Co-Founder of She Podcasts with 20K members and the Director of Community and Content at Libsyn- a hosting, distribution, and monetization podcasting platform. However, she did not start out in podcasting, it came to her after being denied multiple times in Hollywood for not looking like what should be a “traditional stereotypical Latina.” Why are we deemed to all look like Jo-Lo, Selma Hayek or a ganster chola, with various degrees of accents in Hollywood! This is the lens we are still perceived in throughout many roles in our careers or have encountered here in the US, whether you’re an immigrant, 1st Gen, 2nd Gen or a 3rd generation Californian-Aztlan Mexican American, like myself. Podcasting has accelerated tremendously with the influx of technology, specifically for our community narratives and the technology that is leveraging our voices. We break down the numbers, within the Latino community of listening and to recognize the opportunity to invest in our platforms. The Latino Edison Podcasting Report shows the data, and all the receipts of what our community is listening to our podcasting. Podcasting is leveraging many voices and narratives, but it's our own narratives, not AI, as an uninterrupted 1:1 dialoge. As Elise states in this podcast, “it’s unbelievably freeing to me, to not be judged by who I DON’T look like.” More POC/women of color podcasting and our LGTBQ+ communities are moving into podcasting, to share HerStories, our ancestral narratives, and our legacy that will not be erased by AI, but will give power to new and stronger generations. Covid shut down gave us a whole new avenue to search for our narratives, and our cultural dialogue. Meet John Murillo, Founder of Chicano Hollywood, a media and film streaming platform based out of Los Angeles California, that brings their own narratives of the barrio and Chicano culture through their Chicano Hollywood App, ROKU, Amazonfire TV, AmazonTV, and through their website, Chicanohollywood.com. Chicano Hollywood is a movement born on the set of the feature film, " Horchata with Oat Milk ". While on set, a bunch of Chicano filmmakers created a story about the adjustments and effects of gentrification with the theme of "whether good or bad change happens". In similar fashion that story epitomizes the current social standing of Chicanos nationwide, including how we are hired within Hollywood. Chicano story tellers are growing in prominence, standing and influence as Producers, Directors, DP's, Crew and especially Talent. We are becoming a voice that reflects the majority of the English speaking Latinos of any decent here in the United States. You only have to look at the power of influence in the current narratives to know, now is our time as a community to build an ecosystem of support through these powerful platforms that share our voices, our lens. To Learn more about Chicano Hollywood and their upcoming event, “Elevate” Conference, September 8th and 9th in Los Angeles, CA., you can view it here . 1 S4 Ep49: Bianca Lopez Co-Director of Valley Improvement Projects Seeks Environmental Justice For California Farm Working Communities 48:11
Did you know California is the largest producer of almonds and dairy here in California and largest exporter of fresh fruits and vegetables in the nation? The United States is fortunate to have fresh foods grown here in California. 90% of workers that support the industry are Latino farm workers, with the highest poverty and live disproportionately in housing that is in the poorest conditions. The Agricultural Industry could not survive without the Latino farm workers that have been supporting this now 25 billion dollar industry for decades. The California Ag industry is one of the larger contributors to the worst air quality due to toxic emissions pollution, green waste incinerators and pesticide spraying, which are mostly concentrated around communities of color , here in California. Climate change is real within California, and the Latino and BIPOC community members are being left out the conversations for climate change initiatives and policy making towards cleaner air, regulation of pesticides and clean water! The 25 Billion dollar agricultural industry and commercial real estate developments. are building the self serving and tax free incentives to build and buy more land to create more wealth for the few. These new initiative directly affect the rural and low income communities. Today, my guest Bianca Lopez of the Valley improvement Projects will discuss how she and the VIP organization is working diligently to bring our voices to the California State policy making tables for lower emissions programs and pesticide notification technology and data solutions for our Latino and BIPOC central valley communities. The California Ag Industry can not be a sustainable economy without the Latino farm working expertise and collaboration over these EPA policies that are lobbied for the benefits of the Agricultural Industries. Latino farmworkers and rural communities can be the solution to help create effective policies for our future generations, here, and across the nation. 1 S4 Ep48: The State of Latino Entrepreneurship with Latino Business Action Network COO, Jennifer Garcia 38:59
The journey to being an entrepreneur to a multi-million dollar company can be challenging when you don't have an uncle that's a banker. Jennifer Garcia, COO at LBAN , Latino Business Action Network, a Silicon Valley based non profit, discusses how we can move beyond just the side hustle, to entrepreneur, to multi-million dollar business with conversations when we can build stronger networks. Latinos are the fastest growing entrepreneurial group and yet, we lack the financial backing to scale our business. Why? We discuss some of the financial barriers, that are not associated to the Latino Business but to the institutions that support the business entrepreneurship community. Fast facts: The odds of loan approval from national banks are 60% lower for Latino-owned businesses above $50K and Government Contracts are smaller and take longer for approvals. Latinos are the highest indexed to start a technology business, but receive less than 2% overall in VC funding. Latinos are 20% of the US population. LBAN is partnered with the Stanford Graduate School of Business in this 8th annual report State of Latino Entrepreneurship for 2022 and was released earlier this year, from a national survey of 10,000 business owners across the country. The survey respondent pool consisted of 5,011 Latino-owned employer businesses and 5,017 nonHispanic White-owned employer businesses, which served as a benchmark comparison group. All the companies sampled generated at least $10,000 in annual revenue and had one employee beyond the owner. You can find the report here. As Latinas who are multi-generational and indigenous, who continue to live in the Southwest in what was Mexico before 1849, our stories are steeped in survival and strength. Angela Salazar is a rising Arizona Phoenician leader who came from the block and found her ancestral light to break generational poverty. As she describes the “risk vs. reward” mentally, in her pursuit of leadership in a job for 20 years, she took a leap of faith into a new role that would put her onto a leadership path for her community. In a time of uncertainty, she believed in herself and to build a narrative of seeing the value in our communities as untapped talent. As a lifelong learner and sharing her success and gratitude towards mentors who challenged her thinking, she now shares the knowledge back to those on the block and in her sphere of influence. 1 S4 Ep43: Central Valley Latinas of Modesto Building Digital Equity for Marginalized Communities. 48:34
What happens when you bring three fierce Latinas who are inspired by the power of technology and their passion for building digital equity for their communities? Women Tech Makers of Modesto are championing the next generation of tech literacy, confidence and digital community to an area that is least seen as the next technology hub of technology skilled labor, the Central Valley of California. Women Tech Makers of Modesto: Daisy Mayorga-Fuentes , Karlha Arias-Davies , and Roxanne Finks , share their stories of how Latinx representation matters in the technology industry, especially where the Agricultural Industry and larger business industries are outsourcing most of the tech labor force from outside the region, when they have the most knowledgeable workforce right in their own backyard. Daisy, Karlha and Roxanne are on a mission to help close the digital divide and create change for tech equity, higher education, and legacy wealth creation in an area that sees Latinos as low wage workers. 1 S4 Ep42: Theresa E. Gonzales CEO of Latinas From The Block To The Boardroom Discussing AI Bias Within Technology Platforms Against Women Of Color 18:03
Have you ever “googled” yourself? Have you ever googled yourself as a person of color? There is a dominant narrative that has been encoded into the largest search platforms in the world and they have all made their money off the backs of our identities. Our stories and our histories are being written and often rewritten due to the lack of representation in the technology industry. We are less than 4% across the board in the technology industry. Latinas, and other marginalized communities are too often perceived by dominant historical perspectives that diminish our rights and digital equity. And yet, AI technology and other platforms continue to advance, through the greatest power we hold in our hands today, the smart phone. The questions to ask of AI is who is this technology advancement for? How can we give more equity to communities of color and more specifically, communities of color and the LGBTQ+ communities the power to share and write their future narratives? How can Brands show up for true accountability all year long and beyond? Building more digital equity for our communities will allow us to speak our truth. #sisepuede Join the conversations at: Apple Podcasts Spotify IG: @Latinasb2b FB @LatinasB2B TW@LatinasB2B LinkedIn@ theresalatinasb2b Learn more about us at Latinasb2b.com and subscribe This show is part of a recording from the Dallas Podcast Movement Conference, August 2022. Let's talk about the power of networks within our global communities. Maricella Herrera Avila , CEO of the Ellevate Network is creating new leadership in a global community of professional women+. Maricella is the first Latina to be the CEO of this global organization and she brings with her the financial tenacity and leadership to build strength in numbers for a new diverse community. We open with her journey from El Salvador to Mexico, where she worked in corporate real estate banking, and worked on providing credit funding for low income housing development projects in the north of Mexico. As we discuss her leadership journey, we both acknowledge how the pandemic and the recent overturning of the Roe vs. Wade has provided enormous set backs for Latinas in the job market, and that leadership, particularly middle management or managers are where the most impact for real change can happen. 1 S4 Ep40: Nicole Lopez for Congress Starts A New Generation of California Latinas Running For Office 42:16
This episode was recorded in the late summer of 2022, before the release of the recorded racist comments and frustrations on redistricting certain Latino communities in Los Angeles from City Council President, Nury Martinez and her council colleagues, Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo. Our guest, Nicole López was running for a district-42 in the past June primaries, and the youngest Latina on the ballot to run in her District 42. She only lost by a few hundred votes. But that is not stopping her from running in 2024. She discusses how a larger Latino community in East LA and South Central, was part of redistricting initiative after the 2020 census and why it's important for all of us to fill out the U.S Census. We discuss the impact of redistricting for voting and how she brings a new generational voice to those disenfranchised communities that are still financially impacted post Covid. Still active in her community, she saw first hand how her families own small business, Fronteras del Norte , a transportation company for farm workers who follow the seasonal work, was not contacted for PPP loans even through they are an integral part of the community. In fact, she mentioned, banks and local officials were was almost non-existent in outreach to her community and many businesses went under. Nicole is not the first young Latina to run for Congress as we share our admiration for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and recent cover feature on GQ Magazine and discuss how we can stand in our power. Although the June primaries are done, we are in the height of the mid-term voting season for November 2022 and this is not the time to be silent. There has been a lot of hurt in our communities, post pandemic and with the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in some states, putting more pressure on women of color and the LGTBQ+ community. WE have to reach out to those communities, get our facts from trusted sources and participate in this democratic process. Nicole is running for 2024 for her congressional seat and she will not be silent. To register to vote, please go to your local state online voter registration page, such as this one for California Online Voter Registration.
