In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I respond to Ethan from Virginia, who asked about writing in-session notes during child-centered play therapy (CCPT). Ethan wants to know what kinds of things to document and how to categorize them effectively. I explain my personal note-taking system, breaking down how I organize observations, themes, significant quotes, and other key moments from the session to make parent consultations more efficient.

I emphasize that note-taking is not so much for the therapist’s benefit, but is crucial for accurately conveying a child’s progress to parents. I also offer practical tips for developing the habit of taking notes in real time without losing focus or engagement with the child. If you’ve been hesitant to start taking notes during sessions, this episode may help you get started with a simple, replicable system.
