A thought-provoking discussion recorded 28 June 2024, exploring the evolving landscape for Gen Z boys. Recent studies show significant divergence in views on gender among young people (16-19 years). While many Gen Zs embrace progressive beliefs, a considerable number of young men still feel pressured to conform to traditional roles and behaviours such as stoicism and being the breadwinner. In a recent survey, one in five men overall said it’s harder to be a man than a woman today (emerging-tensions.pdf, kcl.ac.uk). This tension can be heightened by online content, commonly known as the ‘manosphere’, promoting more aggressive masculinity. Despite these pressures, Gen Z is at the forefront of redefining masculinity to be more inclusive and emotionally expressive. Social media and pop culture also has a pivotal role to play in promoting these trends, supporting young men to value vulnerability and empathy as key aspects of manhood. Our panel includes: - Daniel Guinness, Managing Director at Beyond Equality – an organisation supporting men and boys to develop healthier identities and behaviours through conversation - Kirsty Ruthven, Head of Education at Lifting Limits – an organisation developing a whole-school approach to gender equality through education and voices from the youth…

With guest speakers Hannah Phillips and Jess Phillips MP. Polarised and vitriolic debates are a problem for democracy, yet increasingly politicians and public officials are having to deal with intimidation and abuse – sometimes with tragic consequences. This is particularly an issue for women and those from minority backgrounds. With a general election looming in the UK, the tone of political debate, both online and in-person, is already steeped in anger. A short podcast with two of the guest speakers from our November 2020 virtual conference on Faith & Belief 2040, looking ahead to the likely changes to the UK's faith and belief landscape over the next 20 years and how society might need to respond. Our Programme Officer, Emily Gow, speaks to Professor Linda Woodhead (Distinguished Professor of Sociology of Religion, Lancaster University) and Mamataj Begum (a representative of the Faith and Belief Forum's Youth Council). This podcast explores what academic research suggests is going to change in terms of the UK's faith and belief landscape, over the next 20 years. It looks at how a growing proportion of people in the UK identify as having 'no religion' and no longer want to identify with any one organised religion, to the extent that this is now the majority identification. It also remarks on the declining influence and prominence of Christianity in British life today, and the increasing diversification of faith and belief in the UK. Linda and Mamataj discuss how these changes might affect the way people identify themselves. Mamataj approaches this from her perspective as a second-generation immigrant to the UK, and a member of the 'Millennial' generation, who tend to approach their faith in different ways to the older generations, finding new spaces (including virtual spaces) for religious observance and prayer. Both speakers reflect on the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on these ongoing trends. This podcast also looks at how the way communities use their religious buildings might change over the next 20 years, focusing on churches and mosques as examples.…

A short podcast with leading anthropologist Professor Harvey Whitehouse, ahead of an evening seminar at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Harvey speaks to Cumberland Lodge Principal, Ed Newell, about what motivates extremist behaviour. Public policy is driven by the principle that violent extremist beliefs cause violent extremist behaviour, but building on a vast body of evidence from anthropology and experimental psychology, Professor Whitehouse argues that the real motivation for extreme behaviour is ‘identify fusion’ (an especially powerful form of group bonding) coupled with perceptions of out-group threat. On this view, religious beliefs are just post-hoc rationalisations, rather than the real drivers of extreme behaviour. If the hypothesis above is true, then a startling conclusion follows: the suicide bomber who claims that he is acting because of religious beliefs is wrong, and deluded about what is motivating him. It also means our countering violent extremism strategies should focus less on the hot-air produced by extremist beliefs, and more on what really motivates violent extremism. When fused groups feel threatened, they are liable to exhibit extremist behaviours and to perceive their actions as primarily defensive. If this is the case, then should countering violent extremism strategies focus on disrupting or redirecting the fusion process, rather than challenging the extremist’s explicit religious beliefs and arguments? The Cumberland Seminar that followed this podcast recording took place at Cumberland Lodge, the educational foundation, on Wednesday 8 November 2017. It brought together leading social commentators, parliamentarians, NGO leaders and researchers, to discuss the issues. cumberlandlodge.ac.uk…

Our climate is changing. As global temperatures increase, the risks to human populations become more severe. We are already seeing the impact of more extreme weather events (e.g. flooding, coastal erosion) and shifting climate patterns (i.e. food and water shortages). But it is not just these environmental risks that we need to consider. Hidden associated risks such as population health, and political and economic stability, are also of global concern. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report written and released in 2013 by the world’s leading scientists there is no doubt that climate change is occurring, and based on nearly 7 years of new climate change research, human activities releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere since the 1950s are “most likely” the dominant cause. To avoid experiencing the worst climate change impacts, the governments of the world have agreed to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in an attempt to limit global warming to a maximum of 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The only way to achieve this will be to work together. In December 2015 the world will come together in Paris at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC). At this meeting all of the nations will meet to agree on a legally binding and universal global climate change agreement, with emission reduction commitments from all countries. The aim will be to bring together all of the existing binding and non-binding agreements under the UN climate convention into a single comprehensive regime to be adopted from 2020. But how will this affect us here in the UK? How do the scientists know that we are causing climate change? What social and economic impacts are we likely to experience in the future, and how are we preparing? How are the global negotiations going? What is the UK Government going to do about cutting our emissions? These are all questions that were covered during a one day conference at Cumberland Lodge on Monday 6th October 2014. Professor Sir Mark Walport, the Chief Scientific Advisor for government, provided our keynote public lecture, which summarised many of the key facts outlined during the day.…
The UK government’s counter-extremism strategy, Prevent, is coming under heavy criticism. In particular, it has been said, that it inhibits discussion in schools about issues of terrorism and extremism, and that it stifles freedom of speech on university campuses. Some Muslims have said they feel as if they are under surveillance and even that their children are at risk of being taken into care. On 4th May 2016, the independent reviewer of the UK’s anti-terrorism laws, David Anderson QC, came to Cumberland Lodge to introduce some current issues relating to Prevent and explain why he thinks there should be an independent review of the strategy. In this short interview he outlines what the Prevent strategy is, why it is proving to be controversial, what can be done to address the issues the strategy raises…
