In 1966, two Brazilian men were found dead on Vintém Hill under bizarre circumstances that continue to perplex investigators and conspiracy theorists alike. Lying side by side, their bodies were discovered wearing matching lead masks—shields with no eyeholes—alongside cryptic notes. Were they victims of a cult ritual, a failed experiment, or something even more otherworldly? Join Courtney every week where she disseminates wellness woo culture for the curious careerist. Episode 19. Flipping the Script on Call Center Work with Richard Blank When you think of call centers, you’re probably thinking of telemarketers and scammers, or maybe even thinking back to a time you had to call a customer service line and hung up the phone feeling frustrated. Wouldn’t it be nice if that story was different and you left those interactions with a smile on your face, feeling cared for and heard? Richard Blank is training his employees to be those call center workers — and they’re even doing it in two languages. In this episode, Richard and I are chatting about his love for the Spanish language growing up, how that led him down to Costa Rica, and how that eventually sparked his CEO journey owning a call center. Richard is such a kind, open soul, so it’s no wonder he brings that light to his employees and everyone around him. It’s a refreshing departure from what we normally expect out of call center experiences, and for that, we can thank Richard for humanizing a statistically dehumanized industry. https://youtu.be/Ww4MUb3vkO4 https://youtu.be/U_2DFeR1b1w Richard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Resume Well, Courtney Page, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending Hosted on Acast. Hosted by Kevin Brierton – a voice of clarity in the cacophony of 'could haves' and 'should haves' – this podcast is your weekly ticket to breaking the chains of procrastination and inaction. https://youtu.be/3yoXzYlDQvM https://youtu.be/JXZLgv0sQ2M The Future of Call Centers: AI and Human Touch In 10 years from now, 99% of us could be replaced. Think about an automatic telling machine for your cash. You don't need to go in the banks anymore. If AI keeps assisting people, moving them along, gathering the information and converting those calls, it's gonna work. Like IVR is integrated voice response you put in your things on the phone. But I tell you what, there'll always be a certain market that presses zero, that's willing to speak to the person at the ticketing counter, paying extra 20 bucks just to make sure it's done. Maybe we're concierge, first class, or just rare. But yeah, it will be adjusting my industry accordingly. And is that a good thing? I think it's a fantastic thing for the consumer. But I don't want people today to fully focus on nonverbal communication. I think the texting and emails and chatting, there's a miscommunication, misinterpretation. If you have the certain skills to be able to speak with somebody, you'll have a much more solid relationship, more memorable. You can transfer that electromagnetic energy. And you'll find your job much more fulfilling. But Kevin, my man, I can't thank you enough. I had the best time today on your podcast. You're all over the place. You didn't give me a specific industry. I don't know how long this cat's been doing this. Who trained them? What sort of onboarding? You're generalizing, making it seem like telemarketing is bad. Okay. Oh, I'm not. No, I'm not generating at all. But no, seriously, let's do the zero conversion ratios every day. Okay. That's why, as I always said as a telemarketer, how can I use them? What am I going to get out of this crappy-ass job that is paying me per hour and I can't get a single freaking commission because the list is bad or the product is bad, the price is bad, everything's bad. Okay. Well, as I said before, this is the romantic death that you have. I can't guarantee the 95 rest of the call. That's up to Billy and his stuff. But at least that 5% with Steve and myself, Prior to the introduction of that company, I'm an ace. What does that mean? I got to pass the pitch. What does that mean? It's a positive reinforcement that wherever I plug Richard or Steve, we are going to be successful. It just so happens that we are not in the right environment at the right time. It's a little bit, but we've overgrown that cage. And so two things, three things should happen if you're signing your name to something, you give it the best that you got. It's gaming through work, through play, through bonding. Now, I never thought that spending your free time doing company exercises was the correct thing. That's your own time. I was never really into going out having beers with the boss afterwards. I'm not a drinker, but I believe that during office hours, during break time or during certain sessions, this is a happy medium. It gives somebody a chance to let off steam, recharge batteries, try the machines that you and I grew up with that virtually today don't even compare to on the Internet. Elton John had it perfectly when he's talking about a pinball wizard, really filling this machine as you were mentioning earlier. Remember not to tilt the machine. People fall in love in my game room by the Pac-Man machine. I've had individuals really compose themselves before sparring out of control to quit or just to have a bad day. And for me, I have this space and one man's trash is another man's treasure. What is one question that you wish I'd asked you? And how would you have answered? I guess... what is the moment in your life that everything changed? And for me is when I sat down with my parents at 18 years old and I convinced them that I was following in my great-grandparents footsteps. He came from Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th, learned English, made our money during the depression. It's in my blood. Skipped a couple of generations, but I'm going south. And Allow me to live a poet's life. Allow me to have a true life. And at 18 years old, making that sort of long play decision, it's kind of crazy. It's kind of risky. It's madness. But looking back at it now, I couldn't be more proud of myself for standing strong and tall and following through on a commitment that I gave myself back in 1991 to continue this and not stop. Additionally, Richard highlights the power of humor and storytelling in creating meaningful connections over the phone. Season 4 Episode 9. March 20th, 2024. Experiencing Costa Rica's Pura Vida and Mental Decompression And the culture here, it's a very united culture. It's a very proud culture. We mentioned Pura Vida, which means pure life. They're really into nature. So, I mean, with all the national parks that you visited and the monkeys that are hanging around, the sloths and iguanas and butterflies, it's like being in a painting. It really is. Maybe when you decompress, my friend, and you put the phone away and you sit under that palm tree next to a waterfall out in the rainforest and no one's around you, maybe that's the sort of thing that can recharge your batteries and get you in a healthier state of mind. The shame that I see is when people bring that mental baggage with them and hoping that that will erase it when they come here. But no, they need to separate the two. Or when people are here, they go maybe a little above and beyond in regards to adventure. https://youtu.be/P0ZIdIAveek https://youtu.be/68QHH2qszcU Richard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Lifelong Learners Collective, Ella Catherine, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. Don't miss this opportunity to elevate your business with invaluable insights from Richard Blank. Topics Discussed: What is BPO, and who utilizes it? When does a business typically start outsourcing its services? When hiring agents for BPO services, what soft skills, characteristics, and qualities should you look for in a candidate? What is Phonetic Micro Expression Reading, and how can it be leveraged in call centers? https://youtu.be/_3M0cyLKQyk https://youtu.be/uM3SWevsxaI https://youtu.be/2DyaWZoz-Dk The Importance of Diligence and Endurance in Business And at the end of the day, Daniel, when you're talking about leverage, you got to choose between 10 companies. I'm not into the Philippines, might be a little more expensive. Look at the way I treated your assistant. I called you back on time, followed through on that email. How about this? I did so much due diligence on you from your LinkedIn profile on your website that I custom made your voicemail and email. He loved me. It was almost mine to lose. And so I'm earning these things by getting a lot of first downs and moving it forward through momentum. I'm not angling my way in there or pretending to be. And so if you have that sort of pace and rhythm, your supervisor needs to calm down. He should remember when he was on the phone and what it's like to do this sort of forced march. Now also, my friend, you need to build up that endurance for it. You're talking about manual dialing. We have machines now that do that for you. But the old school players off of those Cisco phones, remember how to do those dials? And there needs to be some self respect. I like people that make their bed in the morning, if they're capable of hitting the gym, so they can release and retain. And if you can have a better diet, so we just don't do fun food all the time, we have food that can maintain and give you protein. You know, I always believe that regardless of any sort of outcome, at the end of the day, if you know you did things with honorable intentions and good faith, you should be able to live with yourself because a lot of people compare way too much and that's okay. My favorite actor is Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney. I mean, Basil Rathbone, that's my mentor. He was doing stuff in the thirties and forties. So when the client called me and said, Richard, do you know anything about classic movies? Yes. Wiffle ball pitch. Here we go again. I started rattling off all my Alfred Hitchcocks and Steve McQueen's. And I mean, come on, man, I'm all over the place. And the guy's like, man, you know this better than I do. I go, could you imagine how I'm going to be pushing this and selling this? Yeah, absolutely. Getting excited over the spaghetti Westerners of Clint Eastwood. I mean, you've got to be kidding me. These were classics. But I tell you what. One of the greatest things people can do is to watch these movies because if you're speaking, let's say for an example, you're 20 years old now and you wanna call someone like myself a business owner, You should be watching Fast Times at Richmond High and Failure Spielers Day Off. Why? Because that's what I grew up on. That's right. So when you call me up, you go, come on, man. You know Mike DeMone's five-point plan. Or you mentioned Scotty Palmer from the movie Hard Bodies when he talked about the BBD, the bigger, better deal. If you say that to me on a phone call, I have my credit card at the ready. And then I say, hey, Billy, you mind if I make a suggestion? Yeah. And then I rope-a-dope them. Real good. And at the end, they thank me. I will... Let them know times when they missed the beat. I will ask certain questions that they never followed up on. They'll glance over it. They'll hedge it and repeat it. But they won't ask a second or third question, which shows depth, interest, and anchoring, as we spoke earlier. I bet you at the end of the phone call, if I asked them to give me the meeting minutes, they couldn't even tell five of the answers that I gave or five of the extra things that I mentioned. And he said something earlier really stuck out to me when it came to leadership. When you're talking about how you wanted to make the people feel like people are not numbers. And I feel like that's a really big thing, especially nowadays when you work for these different companies and these different corporations that they just look at you as a number, you know what I mean? Not as an actual person. So for you to have that intuition to understand that, you know, if I had these people understand that they are people and I care about the person, then it's like everything else will come to respect will come. 1 Inappropriate Growth Podcast by Paul Angelle. Leadership and Starting a Business with Richard Blank. 44:36
Paul Angelle welcomes Richard Blank, who shares his journey to Costa Rica and insights on leadership, the call center industry, and time management. Richard offers advice for starting a business in Costa Rica and discusses the benefits of podcasting. Specialized Virtual support for your law firm At Stafi, we’re not just staffing providers—we’re growth partners. Our goal is to help your firm thrive, enabling you to focus on winning cases while we handle the rest. Whether you need to fill multiple full-time paralegal roles, find the perfect assistant to handle intake and marketing, or just need some help with the phones after-hours, Stafi has your back. Richard Blank, our latest guest on Inappropriate Growth, shared his unconventional journey to starting a business in Costa Rica. It began with a passion for languages, a spark that no traditional education system could extinguish. He went above and beyond, spending his weekends and evenings pouring over books, watching movies, and engaging with people to grow this passion. His grades might not have been Ivy league standard, but his determination caught the attention of a dedicated Spanish teacher who, along with the late principal Norman Schmidt, believed in him and got him into Arizona for their language program. But how did he convince his parents to let him pursue this path instead of the traditionally coveted fields like Ivy League education or medicine? He invoked his great grandparents. Sounds intriguing, right? Richard's story is a testament to the fact that the road less traveled can sometimes lead to the most exciting destinations. His dedication and commitment to his passion is truly inspiring, and a reminder to us all that success is not always linear. Tune into this episode of Inappropriate Growth to hear Richard Blank's fascinating journey. Who knows, it might just spark your own path less traveled. https://youtu.be/dGgbmWYXEDk https://youtube.com/shorts/BXniUNkkN-I https://youtube.com/shorts/K1E8QnY-zR8 Richard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Paul Angelle, Inappropriate Growth Podcast, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending, Sunset, Louisiana, United States Hosted on Acast. I believe in preventative measures instead of cures. So instead of a 10 minute conversation, Andrew, it's 20, 30 second conversations that you need to land. You need to get the checkpoint, the underwater thumbs up scuba diving because people rush their calls. You do agree with positive or negative reactions, reinforcements, Gotta take a breath, see what's going on in this boxing round. What are they doing? How are they reacting to you? Are you lowering temperatures and getting closer? And so these things are very important in these soft skills. So you're asking me to tie this thing in a bow and make it cookie cutter for everybody. You gotta be kidding me. These calls zig and zag. And so if you try to read your script, if you try to interject at the wrong time, cross-talking, interruptions, nice, and a bad call and you wonder why. And so there's certain timing, it's a two for a one, you take back and go in, you repeat and chisel, and you tell Billy with the coffee bread yelling at you to keep making phone calls your supervisor to calm down. because I'm looking to be engaged right now. I'm looking to be in the moment so I can capture that one or two things on that call that will completely diffuse the situation. The Power of Personal Connection in Communication They didn't have matters. They didn't do their due diligence. They didn't look at your LinkedIn profile or website. They were not prepared to talk with you. And so, as I say, make these calls and emails and voicemails custom made. And if you do, at least you're gonna capture their attention so they'll listen to it. How about this? Richard, why are we leaving voicemails? That's a good point, Andrew. Tell you what, how many texts do you get a day? A thousand? How many emails do you get a day? 500? How many voicemails you get a day? five yeah so i'm gonna leave you a great voicemail tell you how great judy is so maybe you'll call me back and um all i know is this when i do call your company back and judy does pick up the phone she'll say richard i've been here for 10 years the only person who's ever complimenting you on the phone to andrew i'm gonna put you right through oh thank you It works, it won't compromise your ethics and it's gonna make somebody's day. So separate yourself from other people, pay that compliment, pay it forward. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. With a mix of motivational public speaking style backed by tactful and appropriate rhetoric, Richard shared his knowledge and trained over 10 000 bilingual telemarketers. CEO of Costa Rica's Call Center since February 2008. https://youtu.be/Jo_QcNreecM Hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Shawn Day,Hire Lead chill Pocast, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending Overcoming Guilt and Naysayers to Forge a Unique Path That's beautiful. And there we go, my friend. I was willing to take, and also you have to get past certain guilt, either as parents, friends, and you have to avoid the naysayers and great believers, take them into consideration, but you can't have them stop you. And so sometimes you need to be selfish if you want to go on these adventures. And so my intentions were honorable, but I really had to hold course because I literally had nobody to compare notes to. Nobody was doing this. So I was off on my own and I said, you know what? Be bold and brave and see where life will take you. Excellent. So there's a story that aligns a little bit with that, with hire, lead and chill the company. That is, we were much less intentional, but there was still this path that we followed and we didn't have a roadmap either. So we super unintentionally started Hire Lead Chill in that nobody else was doing this recruiting for the home service space back at seven or eight years ago. It was not a consideration to outsource recruiting really in the home service space for 98% of the businesses out there. The Art of Handling Gatekeepers and Creating Positive Momentum It's really an adjustment of mass. Yeah. And in the beginning, people have these ego defense, especially with their mechanisms. And they're black and blue and we're good, thanks. And you sound like a salesman and just send me information. Fine, I'll take that romantic death. But you're at least going to say that to me seven minutes in because I'm going to ask you a bunch of questions in charge of your secretary. You have to understand there are things like positive escalations where if I get a gatekeeper on the phone and I get the pass to pitch and I get transferred to you, I will definitely let them know verbally and in writing how amazing that individual is. So when I call your company back, they remember me. And they add to my momentum. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

And so that allowed me to have a governor. you know, really to pace myself accordingly. So I wouldn't burn out too fast or hurt myself. And, um, we had multiple setbacks. Sure. You want to get a free cappuccino. But that's not the point. The point is to hang for that electromagnetic energy that you have through a smile, through a hug. Because at the end of it all, cash is not going to make you happy. And fortunately for me, doctor, I chose a lucrative industry and got very lucky, and the stars were aligned. And there's only so many dinners you can eat. And so there are certain stages of individuals where they want to pay it forward in one way. And thankfully, I have a linguistic environment where people do want to learn advanced soft skills so they can manage conversations and retain relationships. And I have them study even You know, Helen Keller, for an example, the master communicator that I try to explain, and this is with all due respect. There is a Helen Keller Institute in Desemperados. It's for blind and deaf children. But when you remove one or more senses, others get expanded. She was such a genius where her taste, touch, and spell, she connected to our world, created a language with Ann Sullivan, and the rest is history. We're removing our taste, touch, and smell. Location: Melbourne, Australia Wednesday May 31, 2023 Richard Blank - CEO Costa Rica’s Call Centre Following a Different Path It's impossible for me to share notes with my parents that went to Columbia Business School and did all this finance when I was a Spanish major at Arizona. Yeah. My great grandparents came from Europe. Okay, great. So I can compare myself to a couple generations back that were nomads. That was my argument to my parents at 18 years old and why I wanted to study languages compared to going to Ivy League. Because look what our great grandparents did. They were entrepreneurs. They left Eastern Europe, came to New York, were in the fashion industry, made their money Persistence and Perception But from that component, you mentioned before about walking across the dance floor. Right. Getting up there and you've listened to a number of my podcasts. So apologies if you're getting the same story that you've heard before. But for the audience, the new audiences that haven't heard it, others have. But I had a friend in the army. I wasn't really a friend, but it was someone I was in the army with. He was a good looking guy, but he was a bit dumb. um in my opinion and but he was always dating these amazing women they were beautiful they were doctors and lawyers and and just really genuinely good people that would help out and we're looking myself and my friends are going how you know you're not that bright and you know yeah you're good looking but we were always thinking you know he must be well hung or something like that was you know i was 19 years you know those are the thoughts that go in your head And one day I asked him, and I said, Shane, and I did say this. I said, Shane, you're not that bright. How is it that you're dating all these amazing women? And he turned into this wise old soul, put his arm around my shoulder, and he said, Damien, what you don't see is I ask a lot. Most of them say no. You just see the ones that say yes The Vintage Limo Experience you were mentioning the limo not the kind of limo that your audience is thinking it's a restored 1984 300d lang that's why i want to be in it it's like awesome yeah put in a put in a bar I painted it black. I got the white walls and I found old school, like, hubcaps on it. It's cool. It's real cool. My influence from that was Remington Steel. https://youtu.be/nYS1nbv7aFM https://youtu.be/gshrP2PyzB0 Growing Revenue and Profit, Damian Andrews, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending Hosted on Acast.
