×Clare's newly elected senator claims it would be a 'retrograde step' for the county if Clare had no representation in the upper house of the Oireachtas. First elected to the Seanad in 2011, Martin Conway was reinstated for the fourth time as a member of the administrative panel surpassing the quota on the tenth count yesterday afternoon. The Fine Gael man at the moment stands to be the county's only senator for this term after fellow Ennistymon native Ann Marie Flanagan, Clarecastle's Leonora Carey and Shannon Councillor Tony Mulcahy were unsuccessful in their election campaigns. Conway says the Seanad plays a vital role in the country's political system and says he now offers an extra voice to highlight the major issues and concerns within Clare.…

It's claimed Clare's economy will experience a major lift if the Cliffs of Moher's northern trail can be fully reopened by St. Patrick's Day. It's after the Clare Local Development Company, which manages the trail, confirmed the 6km southern route from Hags Head would likely remain closed for the rest of the year for urgent health and safety works. A 500m stretch connecting the visitor centre to the Doolin trail has also been closed since August, but the CLDC has expressed hope than an agreement can be reached with the relevant landowners to carry out works in time for the peak season. Ollie Gleeson of Ollie's Tours says it's crucial for the region.…

There's been a call for greater regional balance in Clare County Council's gritting operations. During the recent cold spell, the local authority treated roughly 12,250 kilometres of road using over 1,600 tonnes of salt. This week's meeting of Shannon Municipal District has heard Westbury Sinn Féin Councillor James Ryan ask for grit boxes to be strategically placed around the county in times of bad weather going forward. He says there are areas in the south-east of the county which are neglected during extreme weather events.…

1 Hopes For Uptake In Electric Vehicles On Clare Roads As Banner Ranks Fourth For Charger Availability 6:24
Its hoped the wider access to electric vehicle charging stations will encourage more people to make the switch away from petrol and diesel cars. It comes as new data released has identified that the Banner county ranks fourth in Ireland for the availability of public electric vehicle charging networks. The figures released by Geotab identify that Clare has one public charger for every seven battery powered cars in the county, with only Kerry, Mayo and Longford registering greater countywide availability. Chair of the Clare Electric Vehicle Owners Club, John Casey, claims greater research is now being produced, which dispels misconceptions around electric vehicle chargers.…
One of this county's general election candidates claims he is 'holding out no hope' for a resolution to the healthcare crisis from HIQA's impending interim review. A report by the health watchdog analysing the Midwest region's case for a second emergency department is set to be released in the coming weeks. Kilkee native, Dr Tom Nolan, claims HIQA put the nail in Ennis' coffin in 2009 as part of the reconfiguration of the region's hospitals. Nolan, who ran for Fine Gael in the recent general election, says an adequately staffed urgent care unit situated in Ennis would be more than capable of catering for the county's healthcare needs.…
The head of roads policing in Clare is encouraging people to check their vehicle's condition, following the recent spate of inclement weather. The recent cold snap paired with Storm Éowyn have had significant impacts countywide and motorists should be aware that remaining debris left coupled with surface water may present difficult travel conditions. Head of the Roads Policing Unit in the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division Superintendent Eddie Golden, claims people should pay particular attention to the condition of their windscreen wipers. He says any wipers that are in place for an extended period of time will not be as effective and may cause visibility issues.…

The Cliffs of Moher's southern walking trail is expected to remain closed for the entirety of 2026. Roughly 8km of the North and Southern route combined were closed for remedial works last Summer in light of two fatal incidents and a Sport Ireland report which found visitors frequently veer of the trail engaging in risky behaviour. Large scale structural works are in the pipeline for the landmark , and discussions are ongoing with the 38 landowners who provide access to the trail to find a solution. 1 Clare MEP Fearful Speed Limit Reductions Will Result In Greater Disregard For Speed Restrictions 5:39
A Clare MEP is fearful that an impending reduction in the county’s speed limits will be ‘impossible to adhere to’ and result in greater numbers of people disregarding speed restrictions. From February 7th many of the roads across the county will see a reduction in speed limit with national roads changing from 100km/h to 80km/h, local and rural roads from 80km/h to 60km/h, while built-up areas would be limited to 30KM/H. It follows a review carried out by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Road Safety Authority in 2023, which sought to protect vulnerable road users and reduce the number of fatalities seen on Irish roads. Scariff Independent MEP, Michael McNamara, claims existing speed limits are already not being respected and that the proposed changes will be counterproductive.…
