Your speaking pace is an important key component of engaged, entertaining communication. Mastering your speaking pace and knowing when to slow down versus speed up is important in ultimately communicating your message clearly. I've said it before but it's not what you say, but how you say it that is important.

Practicing this skill is helpful to communicate certain ideas and knowing which ideas are best delivered slowly or fast is helpful to your listener. Your job as a speaker is in packaging the content in the correct context.

100 word stories

Speech rate guidelines:

  • Slow: Less than 110 wpm
  • Conversational: Between 120 wpm and 150 wpm
  • Fast: More than 160 wpm
  • Radio hosts and podcasters: 150-160 wpm
  • Auctioneeers: 250-400 wpm

Calculating your Speech Rate = # words / duration of time

About the Show: AccentOutLoud is your weekly source for English communication, insights, experimentation, and inspiration. Every Thursday (and sometimes more) I'll share my personal take on English communication, tips of English communication and what I think is important in clear communication. If you have an interest in improving your English communication, learning a speech-language pathologist's perspective on the field, or just want a uniquely interesting podcast, you're sure to find something useful in each episode. It's my hope that you'll become a fan and gain a better appreciation and understanding of what is involved in your accent as a result!
