Every child is a great leader in the making. It is up to us, the parents and teachers, to shape the child. And we can do this correctly, or in a way that has disastrous consequences, both for the child and society.
No one says it like the Zulu people: there is an old isiZulu saying that "the bull is among the calves", which means that among any group of children, there are leaders waiting to emerge.
This is a summary of my keynote at the Department of Basic Education Summit in Johannesburg.

According to a book I read recently, the answer to the question in the title is: Yes! It's not only that they can, but they actually did! I review the book "Ornament of the World" by Maria Rosa Menocal, where she describes life in Al Andalusia, in Medical Spain, under the Umayyad Dynasty. She describes the immense wealth of Al Andalusia, its dazzling architecture, its world-class universities, and its massive libraries. We know that the modern schooling system has its flaws. But I maintain that it is more than just a mundane yet flawed system: It is, in fact, a harmful system that has some very ominous objectives. If you look into history of the schooling system, you will see that it was designed to produce simple, obedient factory workers, not thinkers and scholars. It is designed to keep kids ignorant by HATING learning. How so? 1. By teaching subjects that are irrelevant to life and work. 2. By making learning so boring that kids end up demotivated and hating learning. 3. By providing a skewed understanding of the world that promotes obedience to certain masters. The key to success in the future is in learning, and it's our responsibility to ensure that our kids love learning. How? 1. Establish a learning culture at home 2. My super power is the ability to see opportunities that technology provides in pretty much any industry. In the past 8 weeks I've spoken at a bank, an educational conference, a Halaal food conference and a conference for religious leaders. Naturally, people wonder how I can speak at such a diverse range of places, to such diverse people. As much as I'd like to think so, I'm not all that amazing. I simply follow a set of rules to identify these opportunities: 1. Critical Thinking: I look at everything form a perspective of: "How can I make it better" 2. Change mindset: Rather than being scared of change, I see it as an opportunity for growth and profit 3. Chunking: I take the time to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable chunks. 4. Creativity: next, I apply my creativity to solving these smaller problem chinks. 5. Collaboration: I know my weaknesses, so I bring on others who are better than me, and work WITH them. 6. Communication: You can have the best ideas and solutions, but if you cannot communicate them, they will remain in your head.
