For the newest edition of The Seltzer Salon, I talked to trumpeter, composer, and so much more, Matthew Halsall, about his new album, An Ever Changing View. It's a stunning album. I've been an admirer of Halsall's work for a while, but this album really swept me up in this lively, vivid world he creates with it. His compositions and trumpet playing are, of course, top notch, but the percussive elements of the album heighten its impact considerably. Add in the full package - custom fonts, cover tapestry, etc - it's an incredible listening experience. It was great to chat about it and hear him discuss those elements and how it came together to produce something so special. Matthew Halsall “An Ever Changing View” https://matthewhalsall.bandcamp.com/album/an-ever-changing-view Tickets for Royal Albert Hall: https://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2023/matthew-halsall/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. Brad Rose is the the principal writer and editor-in-chief of Foxy Digitalis, an online music magazine and has run various DIY record labels for the last 30 years. I interviewed Nick Millevoi just over a year ago, but when his new album, Digital Reaction, came out, a lot of new questions started popping into my head. Then, he shared the video for "Spins of the Axis" and mentioned it's inspiration from the movie RAD, a favorite of mine as a kid that I a) hadn't thought about it years (decades!?) and b) thought nobody else had seen (I had no idea it was re-released in 2020), and so I knew I needed to do a Seltzer Salon with him. Nick is one of the best guitarists on the planet, but it's the way he uses his skill and technique to explore unexpected zones and, perhaps most notably, have some damn fun always grabs me. Digital Reaction is an absolute joy to listen to. It's no surprise that I am drawn to fellow lifers, and the great Bob Bellerue certainly fits that bill. This was the first time the two of us actually sat down and talked, but having occupied similar and adjacent worlds for the better part of two decades, it was a quick connection. In addition to continuing the great Ende Tymes festival, Bellerue's solo music practice has been expanding and evolving along with his collaborative work. We get into two recent projects - an album with Francisco Meirino, and his new duo, Eternities, with Katie Porter. Lifers for life! On this episode of The Seltzer Salon I'm joined by Canadian composer, musician, and dramaturge, Christopher Willes. He recently spearheaded the Resonance Gathering project which has evolved over its lifespan, but began as a large-scale ensemble performance of Pauline Oliveros's To Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe in Recognition of Their Desperation (1970). It grew to become more than that, culminating in a double LP and book release that includes the performance (which happened in the Council Chambers at Toronto City Hall), a sound poetry piece from Oliveros's partner, IONE, and a book documenting the work. It's a stunning document of an incredible piece of work. Willes goes into detail about the origins of the idea, how it came to be, and all the various setbacks they had to overcome to make it a reality. A fascinating conversation about one of 2023's most memorable releases. I've been pretty floored by a lot of the music coming out of Beirut over the last few years - and I realize I'm a bit late to the party here - but the city's scene has produced a handful of my absolute favorite albums in recent memory. One thing many of those records have in common is Fadi Tabbal and Tunefork Studios. I've been in touch with Tabbal for the last few years, and have written about a fair bit of work he's involved in, but it felt long overdue to have a conversation about his work and all that's happening around him. His recent album with Charbel Haber, Enfin La Nuit, was a perfect opportunity. Next up in The Seltzer Salon is the wonderful Eve Maret. Her new album, New Noise, is such a fantastic surprise (wrote a little more about it in last week's Capsule Garden). I love when an artist goes into a new(ish) direction, especially when they take elements of their work and reconfigure them into something different. This album definitely feels like she's taking a risk in doing something outside her comfort zone and the results are great. It was wonderful to talk to her all about it. Hope you'll check out the record!…
