Run by William and Lila Young in the 1920s to 1940s, it presented itself as a sanctuary for unwed mothers. However, behind closed doors, the Youngs operated a black-market adoption scheme, selling babies born at the home to willing adoptive parents. These infants often suffered neglect and mistreatment, with some being buried in small wooden butter boxes on the property.
