He had a strong partnership with Peter Taylor, who complemented Clough's strengths and weaknesses, leading to their success as a managerial duo. Rob explores the theme of resilience and overcoming obstacles. Inspired by the stories of Thomas Edison and Ernest Hemingway, Rob discusses the importance of never giving up, even in the face of adversity. He discusses the reality of life's challenges and the need to fortify oneself against them. Rob also reflects on the power of asking meaningful questions and accepting the realities of life. He shares personal experiences and encourages listeners to embrace their own journeys, finding strength and growth through hardships. KEY TAKEAWAYS The story of Thomas Edison and Ernest Hemingway serves as a reminder that setbacks and tragedies are a part of life, but it is important to persevere and rebuild. Life is filled with disappointments, losses, and challenges, but it is crucial to fortify oneself and find the courage to move forward. It is essential to accept reality and deal with it rather than wishing for things to be different. Asking oneself meaningful questions, such as what life is asking of them and how they can serve, can help navigate difficult situations. The true measure of a person's character lies in their ability to face adversity, sit with pain, and find beauty even in difficult circumstances. BEST MOMENTS "Life is hard. Life is a tragedy. Get used to it. Understand it. Live with it." "Your job is to do whatever you can to fortify yourself, be an example to others, help others to fortify themselves against the tragedy that life is on this physical plane." "Words are cheap, talk is cheap, action is where it's at." "Is it okay to be wrong? Of course. Is it bad to do due diligence? No. Is it a bad thing to sit forever at a crossroads while your life passes before your eyes? No." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/leader-manager-coach-podcast/id1370481271?mt=2 https://www.robryles.co.uk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMPYDVzZVnA https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertryles/?originalSubdomain=uk HOST BIO Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. He discusses the importance of coaching and mentoring, emphasising the value of hunger and attitude in achieving one's goals. The importance of taking action and starting the journey towards one's dreams, even if the path is uncertain. The significance of attitude and mindset in overcoming challenges and achieving success. The value of mentorship and guidance in personal and professional development. The power of humility and the willingness to acknowledge and learn from mistakes. BEST MOMENTS "I think a lot of us underestimate the value that we have when we coach the younger generation that's coming up and that aspires to do that." "I never thought that I couldn't fly fighter jets. I had no idea how to do it. But I never really had anybody tell me, no, you can't do that definitively." "I think the important thing is there's the hunger there and there's action behind it. That character I was just like I don't know what I'm doing, but I know that I started college and I started taking aviation related classes and I started flying and I started just doing things that were down that track." "If you're a bad apple and you can't get on with people, then you're going to struggle. And if you speak to elite coaches and you say, look, as long as you've got somebody who's got an ability, it doesn't have to be the very best in the world, but if they have an ability to perform, it's the psychological aspect that will make them world-class." Rob delves into the life and career of renowned football manager Jose Mourinho. Drawing from Patrick Barclay's book "Anatomy of a Winner," Riles explores Mourinho's journey from a middle-class upbringing in Portugal to becoming one of the most successful football managers of the modern era. Rob highlights Mourinho's unique skill set, including his intelligence, multilingual abilities, sports science knowledge, and teaching background. He also discusses Mourinho's formative years as an assistant to Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal, where he gained invaluable experience and developed trust and reliability. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jose Mourinho is a highly successful football manager and coach, known for his winning mentality. Mourinho's upbringing and early experiences in football, including working as an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson, shaped his career. Mourinho possesses multiple intelligences, including linguistic ability, sports science knowledge, and teaching skills. He is a master psychologist, using the media and mind games to create an advantage for his teams. Mourinho is also an innovative and detail-oriented coach, integrating technical, tactical, physical, psychological, and social aspects of the game in his training sessions. BEST MOMENTS "And I think one of the, or amongst the things that excite people about Mourinho and intrigue people about Mourinho is the way in which he landed into the most successful league in the world, the English Premier League with Chelsea and how he took it by storm." "Jose Mourinho was an overnight success. Very quickly following on from the great success he had in Portugal, as anybody who is invested in the game knows, he went on to have enormous success at Chelsea, coached Manchester United, Real Madrid, and continues to be a highly successful European coach now in Italy." "He built them up to be greater than they were. He lent them every bit of belief he had and made them feel great and made them into the best players that they could possibly be." "Obsessed with detail as many great leaders and winners are. But on the football pitch, he was at the vanguard or the forefront, the cutting edge of evolution, where technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of football coaching are brought into the arena of everything being done together." Leader Manager Coach Podcast

Rob explores the concept of true authentic leadership and the qualities that make a person a true leader. He emphasises the importance of being a doer, someone who takes action and creates positive change, rather than just speaking about it. Rob also discusses the power of hope and how seemingly hopeless situations can be overcome with determination and perseverance. He delves into the role of dopamine in driving human behavior and highlights the importance of the journey rather than the destination. KEY TAKEAWAYS True leadership is about taking action and doing something, not just speaking or having a title. Life may be challenging, but very little is truly hopeless. There are countless examples of individuals overcoming seemingly impossible situations. The journey itself, not the destination, is what brings fulfillment and happiness. It's the hope and progress that give us a sense of purpose. Building relationships and being a net positive giver is crucial for personal growth and success. Trusting others and treating them positively, unless proven otherwise, can lead to more beneficial outcomes in the long run. BEST MOMENTS "A leader is not someone with a name on a door, that is, humanly created. A leader is a doer. Somebody who does something. Who takes action." "Very little is hopeless. Life is hard, brutal, challenging, probably things will take 10 times as long as you thought they will take, they will be 10 times harder, and you may not get anywhere near achieving what it is that you thought you would do in the timeframe that you hoped. But there are too many stories and there is too much evidence about human beings about individuals who have achieved great things from seemingly hopeless situations." "It's the hope that gives you the dope. It's not the achievement or it's not the acquisition necessarily, because yet today's success is tomorrow's irritation. Today's happiness is tomorrow's misery." Rob explores the importance of stress and challenge in personal growth and compares it to how trees are forged through adversity. He then delves into the concept of love, emphasising that true love is demonstrated through the investment of time. He encourages listeners to reflect on where they spend their time as it reveals their true passions and priorities. The episode also touches on the significance of being authentic and not imitating others, as well as the responsibility of leaders to take care of themselves and empower others. KEY TAKEAWAYS Stress and challenge are necessary for personal growth and development. Love is shown through the investment of time and attention. Authenticity is important; be true to yourself and avoid imitating others. As a leader, take responsibility for yourself and others. Self-determination theory, which includes autonomy, competency, and relatedness, is crucial for empowering individuals in organisations. BEST MOMENTS "If you are a mature individual who is prepared to put themselves through optimal amounts of challenge, the right amount of stress, and not look for the constant easy way, then you will forge yourself into whatever it is that you hold as your golden vision." "How do you know when somebody truly loves something or someone? They spend their time and are prepared to spend their most valuable asset, which is your time, with or on that particular person or subject." "Be yourself. Be truly and utterly yourself. It is the way" "As a leader, you have to be responsible first and foremost for yourself. But if you consider yourself a leader and you wish to influence others and be there for others and show a caring aspect for others, you need to take responsibility for them." Rob shares a variety of insights and lessons that have stood out to him from his recent readings and experiences. He discusses the importance of furnishing one's life with truth, courage, and beauty, and how these virtues can enhance leadership, management, and coaching. Rob also explores the value of learning from defeat and the power of commitment, even in the face of adversity. He delves into the concept of constantly moving from theory to practice to mastery, emphasising the importance of energy, work, and love in living a fulfilling life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Remember to furnish your life with truth, courage, and beauty. This noble aim can guide leaders, managers, and coaches in their endeavours. There are valuable lessons in defeat, while victory offers only one lesson. Embrace defeat as an opportunity for analysis and growth. The worse you feel, the more committed you become. Emotions should not dictate your level of commitment. Push through challenges and maintain dedication regardless of how you feel. Constantly move from theory to practice to mastery. Seek knowledge and understanding, apply it in practice, and continue to improve until you reach mastery. Be present and focus on the present moment. Avoid getting caught up in past traumas or future worries. Tolerate others but hold yourself to high standards. Limit your thoughts to the present and deal with what is in front of you now. BEST MOMENTS "Remember to furnish your life with truth, courage, and beauty." "There are a thousand lessons in defeat, but only one in victory." "The worse I feel, the more committed I become." Rob discusses the book "Courage is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave" by author Ryan Holiday, highlighting the key findings and lessons from the book, which align with the philosophies discussed on the podcast. Rob emphasises that courage is not just physical, but also moral, and explores the importance of facing fear, taking small steps towards bravery, and standing up for what you believe in. KEY TAKEAWAYS Courage is a key virtue that encompasses both physical and moral bravery. It involves taking small steps and practicing bravery in everyday life. Fear is a normal part of the courageous journey. It is the first step in recognising that you are on the right path and being challenged. Courage is about answering the call and being committed to noble ideals. It requires standing up for what you believe in and speaking truth to power. The heroic journey involves selflessness and transcending personal desires. It may involve periods of depression and facing challenges alone, but it is necessary for growth and defining oneself as a hero. Heroism is about making choices and following one's ethical line. It is not just about one monumental choice, but a series of choices that shape one's character and contribute to a heroic path. BEST MOMENTS "Im going to talk about the outstanding findings that affect us all" "Reading is where it's at" "Embrace fear and choose the path and jump in" "Find your passion and find that thing that drives you!" Rob discusses the concept of leaders who are also great coaches, drawing inspiration from an article by Bill George and Zach Clayton in the Harvard Business Review. Rob highlights the importance of care, organisation, alignment, challenge, and help in effective leadership. He also talks about the fact that a leader's title may make them a manager, but it is their ability to inspire and lead their team that truly makes them a leader. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leadership is not solely determined by one's title, but by the perception of those being led. Being a leader means gaining the trust and respect of your team. The acronym COACH (Care, Organise, Align, Challenge, Help) highlights key qualities and actions of successful leaders who also act as coaches. Care is essential in building relationships and trust with your team. Genuine care for your team members will lead to better communication and collaboration. Organise involves placing individuals in roles that align with their strengths and skills. Effective leaders understand how to assemble a team that complements each other's abilities. BEST MOMENTS "Your title makes you a manager, but your people make you a leader." "People don't care what you know until they know how much you care." "Your job is to organise and put people, as the Harvard Business Review says, in their sweet spot." "Your job is to explain, show, demonstrate, and bring to life the vision that everybody will die for." Rob shares his thoughts and insights on various topics related to personal growth and development, beginning by discussing the concept of hierarchy and how our perception of authority figures can impact our feelings of disappointment or frustration. Rob then delves into the importance of maintaining inner peace and not letting external circumstances disturb our consciousness. He emphasises the need to focus on personal evolution and growth, seeking wisdom from others and following one's own hero's journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hierarchical levels in organisations and society are man-made and do not define one's worth or value. It is important to focus on personal growth and evolution rather than being concerned with positions of power. Maintain a peaceful relationship with themselves, their soul, and a higher power. By not allowing external factors or opinions to disturb this peace, individuals can navigate challenges and hierarchies with a sense of calm and confidence. Rob highlights the importance of answering the call to embark on one's own hero's journey. This involves stepping out of comfort zones, facing challenges, and following one's heart and true purpose, even if it scares them. Take responsibility and move forward: By taking ownership of one's actions and choices, individuals can make progress and grow personally and professionally. BEST MOMENTS "The only hierarchy is consciousness." "You have to worship your own, whatever you consider God to be." "From the wound comes the salve. From the problem comes the answer." "Shoulder as much responsibility as you can and move forward."
