European countries discussing sending up to 100,000 peacekeeping troops to Ukraine in event of ceasefire — Reuters

European countries are reportedly discussing the potential deployment of troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, according to Reuters. Analysts and officials cited by the outlet estimate that a European contingent could range from 40,000 to 100,000 personnel, with the majority likely coming from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the U.K.
A Ukrainian official told Reuters that a European deterrence force could be formed by a coalition of five to eight countries. Franz-Stefan Gady, a former military planning expert from Austria who now works at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said he believes up to 100,000 troops could be involved in rotations at any time, including units preparing for deployment. A European security officer speaking anonymously gave the same estimate.
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) also referenced the 100,000-troop figure in late November, claiming that Western countries are increasingly inclined to “freeze” the conflict and may deploy up to 100,000 peacekeepers in the region.
