And God said, “Let there be light,” . . . and there was light!

Have you ever thought about how remarkable that sentence is? God spoke a word and light exploded into being. In that word, light covered the darkness and the darkness has not been able to conquer the light.

On Sunday, this will be our meditation as we look at Day 1 of the creation week. In Genesis 1:3–5, God speaks light into existence and separates it from the darkness. And from that one word, we discover an entire theology of light. On Sunday, that is what we will look at, as we begin in Genesis 1 and trace how the Bible speaks of God’s light, God’s day, and God’s rule over the darkness.

To prepare for Sunday, take time to read Genesis 1 and then read John 1 too. Both chapters testify to God’s good creation and call us to marvel at the only one who is light.

As the Lord allows, I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, when we will gather together to behold the God who haas revealed to us his unapproachable light.

For His Glory and your joy in Christ,

Pastor David

Discussion & Response Questions: Genesis 1:3-5

In Genesis 1:3–5 we enter Day 1 of God’s creation of the earth. Why should we see verse 3, not verse 1–2, as beginning the creation week?

What is the relationship of God’s light (God is light) to the light of heaven and to the light of the earth?

Is it possible (or conceivable in your mind) to see a world with light, but without a Sun or stars (created on Day 4)? Compare Revelation 21:25; 22:5.

How does that final creation (i.e., the new creation) inform the way you think about the creation of the earth?

There are four actions verbs in Genesis 1:3–5. What are they and what do we learn from each?

How does Genesis 1:5 define “day”? Why does that definition matter?

What does the light of Day 1 have to do with the Day of the LORD?

What hope of salvation do you find in Day 1 of creation? Compare 2 Corinthians 4:6.

What else does this passage teach you: About God? About God’s Word? About the world?
