The Great Escaper is a 2023 biographical drama film directed by Oliver Parker, and written by William Ivory. It is based on the true story of a British World War II Royal Navy veteran who in June 2014 "broke out" of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France. It is also based on that of Bernard Jordan, who was 89 years old when he made his journey to France.[4] Another forthcoming film based on Jordan's story, The Last Rifleman starring Pierce Brosnan, is also expected to be released in 2023.[5] The film stars Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. The Great Escaper had its world premiere at BFI Southbank on 20 September 2023, and was released in the United Kingsom on 6 October 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is Jackson's last film: she died in June 2023, nine months after she finished filming her part. Suggestions that it might also be Caine's final film were dispelled by Caine, who stated he will commence filming in January 2024 on a project about Charles Darwin.
