Konstantin Chaykin 1.65mm ThinKing – Step aside Bvlgari, Piaget & Richard Mille! We have a new (Thin)King in town! The new record holder is Konstantin Chaykin which pushes the limits of thinness by another 0.05mm with a 1.65mm mechanical watch. The case measures 40mm and its thickness has been achieved by splitting the balance and roller of the balance wheel using a balance wheel. This reduces the height needed for a balance staff. The barrel also has been redesigned to remove the need for a cover. Finally, the case back doubles up as a mainplate. Naturally, the actual concept goes far beyond this, so stay tuned for a proper write-up.

Impressively, the brand did not just stop at clinching the record but also was able to design the ThinKing as a Wristmon, with the hours and minutes operating as separate sub-dial “eyes” on the front and the brand’s logo and name acting as a nose and mouth. Beyond that, there is also a series of puns. You’ve heard of “ThinKing” but there is also a PalanKing case (after a Palanquin) that can be added to the watch to enhance its robustness and reduce the likelihood of the watch bending. The Palanking also adds the ability to wind the watch via a crown (a key is needed otherwise) and set the time (this cannot be set without the Palanking). Is this cheating? Not really though it does take a little off the gloss of the win imo.

Moser x Studio Underd0g Passion Fruit – If you thought that Mb&f x H Moser & Cie was outrageously good, wait till you see what H Moser & Cie x Studio Underd0g have cooking. In the past few days, both brands have put out Instagram videos teasing their collaborations centred around passionfruit based desserts and now we have the end product, an Endeavour Perpetual Calendar and a brand new monopusher Series03 set in the fruit’s colourways. On the Moser, the plum coloured elements come on the main dial where you find the power reserve, small seconds and what forms an outer ring for a gold hammered fume Grand Feu enamel dial that sits on top. It is also beautifully framed by a silver coloured outline. On the Studio Underd0g, we have a Coarse Dégradé Amber and Royal Purple multilayer dial with the latter that includes the 3 o’clock small seconds sitting below the former much like the combination on the Moser. Both watches revolve around balance, on the dial, and between the two brands, with Moser taking on much of the playful tones and contrasting colours from Studio Underd0g, while Studio Underd0g embraced the minimalism that often comes on Moser watches, doing away with its seed hour markers, and taking on a touch of fume. Studio Underd0g’s piece is a first in the Series03 from the brand, that uses a Sellita SW510 monopusher chronograph.

The watches will be sold as a pair and are now available on H Moser’s website for CHF 59,000.

While on paper, the two brands could not be further apart in pricing and positioning, their passion for watches, design and all the fine details, truly makes them the perfect pairing. These creations are inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Robur the Conqueror, mixing a zeppelin airship with the steampunk aesthetic, and its core has two engines. One caliber commands the digital time display and chiming function (chiming at the hour and half hour), each function powered by a barrel that’s connected to the front propeller (counterclockwise for the time and clockwise for the chiming). The second caliber has a third barrel, connected to the back propeller, whose sole purpose is activating the ship’s 16 propellers! Besides your mind, this automaton won’t blow anything away as they move at 14 seconds per turn, which keeps them visible and from creating wind. By working in pairs, the speed effect is enhanced and can be made to accompany the chiming or not. It will command the room at 60cm long, 60cm tall, and 30cm tall. Its aluminum, brass, and steel frame numbers 1520 components weighing 17 kg. Defined by their colored components, executed in translucent cold lacquer, 8 of each will be produced.
