Host Gena Timberman welcomes Maggie Boyett, Chief Communications Officer for the Shawnee Tribe, to talk about the Five Moons Dance Festival, a special event that will honor OU School of Dance co-founder Yvonne Chouteau (Shawnee). The Festival was created to pay tribute to the Five Moons, a group of Native American ballerinas from Oklahoma - Choteau, Rosella Hightower (Choctaw), Moscelyne Larkin (Peoria/Eastern Shawnee), and Maria and Marjorie Tallchief (Osage Nation). They talk about the partnerships involved in the Festival including the University of Oklahoma, the Jacobson House Native Art Center, First Americans Museum, and the Shawnee Tribe as well as other Five Moons' Tribal Nations. Gena and Maggie discuss the heritage of dance in Oklahoma, the legacy of Oklahoma's Native prima ballerinas, and the importance of community and family connections and support. Maggie reflects on her own dance education and the inspiration she gained being taught by Moscelyne Larkin.
