Alex Riad, an Egyptian-American playwright from New York City will be visiting Durango as part of PlayFest's 2024 Real-World Speaker series as a way to connect young theatre professionals from diverse backgrounds with our local high school and college students. This Thursday March 7 at 1pm Alex will give a free talk for the Fort Lewis College students and the general public at the FLC theatre building. During the week Alex will also speak to students at Durango High School and Animas High School about his path to becoming a playwright. Also over the weekend March 9 & 10 Alex will lead a playwrighting workshop. Alex was inspired to become a playwright himself after a professional playwright visited his high school and spoke about the challenges and opportunies in the theatre industry encouraging students who may not have otherwise envisioned careers in the theatre arts. Alex's play HEARTBEAT was featured at PlayFest's 2023 festival to much acclaim. He is a graduate of The Julliard School and is currently under commission at the Atlantic Theatre Company via the Judith Champion Launch Program. Alex is the second playwright in the Real-World Speaker series, the first was Sky Lakota-Lynch a young actor of Native American and Ethiopian descent currently starring in THE OUTSIDERS on Broadway. This year's exciting 2024 PlayFest will be taking place in Durango from June 25-30. Stay tuned for more information!
