Four Corners Arts Forum

My guest today is Dr. Gary Rottman who for 30 years was Associate Director at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is currently a member of the Professional Associates of Fort Lewis College which helps build awareness of the college and the importance of liberal arts, serving students, faculty, staff and the community. He is here on the program with me today to talk about History Live! a month long event celebrating the humanities in Southwest Colorado beginning with two Chautauqua style performances by Brain “Fox” Ellis at the college on September 5th as Meriwether Lewis and on September 6th as Walt Whitman. A host of additional events will be continuing throughout the month with programs, lectures, and workshops from multiple humanities and arts groups across Durango including the Life-Long Learning Lecture Series. Some of the topics include Ute Family History, The Military Fort Lewis, Restoring The Powerhouse and the Sand Creek Massacre. The entire program is created by Shelley Walchak of Bayfield and co-sponsored by Southwest Colorado Humanities. Shelley has a history of 40 years of library directorships in the area and has also authored a book called 52 Rivers: A Woman’s Fly Fishing Journey. She enlisted 20 cultural organizations to cooperate and present the month long program in its sixth year. Events take place at Fort Lewis College, Animas Museum, Pine River Library, The Powerhouse and Maria’s Bookshop.
