Today’s episode is the second in a two part series celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Maria’s Bookshop here in Durango. There will be an anniversary party this Saturday September 28th from 4-9pm with beer from SKA Brewing, snacks, dancing, live music, family fun games and giveaways and everyone is welcome! Last week I had an interesting and fun conversation with Evan Schertz the current owner of Maria’s and we talked about the bookstore as it is today. He joins me again in the studio and this time we have also brought in Andrea Avantaggio one of the previous owners, who is also Evan’s Mom. Andrea ran the business for over 20 years with Evan’s Dad Peter Schertz who is her husband of many years. This has been a family owned business now for two generations and today Andrea fills us in on some of the history of the shop which I think is interesting for all of our listeners and community members! Learn about how Maria’s got its name and how Andrea and Peter decided to become small business owners in town. We talk about the independent bookstore industry and the sharing of ideas through bookseller conferences throughout the United States. Growing up around the family business Evan had some interesting stories including a 5th grade birthday party sleepover at the bookstore for the midnight release of the last Harry Potter book. Now Evan after much thought has taken the reins as the owner of the bookstore which is dedicated to serving the community but also receives immense support from the Durango community as a valued business through their love of reading and independent thinking.
