Notes:
Our natural impulse to deal with people from a place of self-interest makes peace with others impossible.
ME – YOU – OTHERS
Self-Image - How does it make ME look
Self-gratification - How does it make ME feel
Self-preservation - How does it make ME benefit
Conflict: A disagreement or opposing views about needs, wants, and expectations.
It’s impossible to have peace with others unless we change our default way of interacting with people.
Our current definition of peace is impossible to experience in the real world.
Peace: Freedom from Disturbance or a State of Tranquility
In a world that is broken, and where everyone is flawed, Conflict and Chaos become unavoidable
How do we have peace with others?
PEACE WITH OTHERS: Security/Provision – Identity/Value – Righteousness/Relate Rightly
Righteousness: Acting in accord with divine or moral law
“Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.”
- Mark 12:31
Jesus knew he had come from God and would go back to God. He also knew that the Father had given him complete power. So during the meal Jesus got up, removed his outer garment…
- John 13:3-5
…and wrapped a towel around his waist. He put some water into a large bowl. Then he began washing his disciples' feet and drying them with the towel he was wearing.
- John 13:3-5
“You will never wash my feet!” Peter replied. “If I don't wash you,” Jesus told him, “you don't really belong to me.” Peter said, “Lord, don't wash just my feet. Wash my hands and my head.”
- John 13:8-9
Jesus answered, “Are you really ready to die for me? I am telling you the truth: before the rooster crows you will say three times that you do not know me.”
- John 13:38
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
- Philippians 2:3-5
Righteousness:
We’re benefactors/not exploiters
We’re forgiving/don’t payback
Boundary setters/not codependent
Receiving God’s love, grace, and provision transforms our interactions with others from selfish to selfless…which brings peace regardless
TRUTH: We can’t give what we don’t have.
