In this episode of Historically St. Pete, St. Petersburg Museum of History executive director Rui Farias shares one of the little-known historic stories of St. Petersburg - the city's incredible aviation history Sunshine City. The Museum of History works hard to keep this history alive, but there is one organization that has gone above and beyond protecting and preserving this aviation story – the Florida Aviation Historical Society (FAHS). Joining Rui in studio is pilot and president of FAHS, Mary Fletcher. Says Rui:
"It begins on January 1, 1914 when the Tony Jannus used the Central Yacht Basin and lifted a Benoist airboat off the waters of Tampa Bay, carrying former mayor A.C. Pheil as a passenger and landing roughly 23 minutes later in the world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight. Yes, the birthplace of true aviation is St. Pete, not North Carolina! Albert Whitted Airport becomes one of five St. Pete airports when it opens in 1929 – named after Capt. James Albert Whitted"
Rui Farias is the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History, which has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 102 years.
