For nearly 60 minutes, Zach Wilson and the New York Jets looked like they were stuck in the mud, with an offense that was about as lively as a wet blanket.
Then, out of nowhere, Wilson unleashed two dimes, Zuerlein’s leg did the rest, and the Jets somehow walked off the field winners, 13-10, in a gritty, rainy showdown with the Giants.
In a final act of defiance, Greg Zuerlein nailed a 35-yarder as time expired in regulation, and then booted a 33-yarder with 6:09 left in overtime to seal the comeback win for the Jets.
“We weren’t leaving that field without a win,” said a confident Wilson after the game.
With the win, the Jets (4-3) continued their hot streak, racking up their third consecutive victory in a game that saw them grind out 46 yards in six plays to set up Zuerlein’s game-winning kick, thanks in part to a pass interference call on Giants’ Adoree Jackson.
Coach Robert Saleh wasn’t taking any chances, opting for the field goal instead of risking a turnover. Zuerlein delivered, sending the ball through the uprights and sending the Jets’ sideline into a frenzy.
“That’s how you draw it up, right?” said tight end Tyler Conklin with a grin.
On the other side, the Giants (2-6) were left licking their wounds after a tough loss that saw them come up short on a fourth-and-1 at the Jets’ 17-yard line. Instead of going for it, the Giants opted for a field goal, but Graham Gano pushed it wide left, adding to his earlier miss from 47 yards out.
“No excuses. That’s not who I am,” said a dejected Gano after the game.
Wilson, despite struggling for most of the game, finished 17 for 36 with 240 yards and a touchdown pass to Breece Hall. Garrett Wilson had a solid game as well, hauling in seven catches for 100 yards.
“Resilience. That’s what this team is all about,” said Saleh.
For the Giants, it was a tale of two halves, as they were unable to get anything going on offense after Tyrod Taylor went out with a rib injury in the second quarter. Practice squad quarterback Tommy DeVito took over and managed to give the Giants a 10-7 lead with a 6-yard run, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
Taylor was taken to the hospital for further evaluation and will remain there overnight.
Saquon Barkley had a big game on the ground, racking up 128 yards on 36 carries, but the Giants finished with a net passing yardage of -9, the lowest in a game since 2000.
“We tried to win it the old-school way,” said Giants’ coach Brian Daboll.
Next up for the Jets is a Monday night showdown with the Los Angeles Chargers, while the Giants will head to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders.
