Episode 2: Overdevelopment in Rural Sarasota: The Fight to Keep the Country Country
Manage episode 461954274 series 3579715
Old Miakka residents Mike Hutchinson and Eileen Fitzgerald are suing Sarasota County over the approval of sprawl development on rural lands in northeast Sarasota County. The Sarasota County Comprehensive plan requires the County to provide for rural lifestyles, but how is that actually enforced? We discuss their case, the impacts of overdevelopment, and how Sarasota County government looks to be serving developers at the expense of residents and their quality of life.
In 2022 the County approved the expansion of Lakewood Ranch (aka "Lakewood Ranch Southeast") - 5,000 homes on 4,100 acres that is now rural land. If built, those homes will fundamentally change the now rural character of northeast Sarasota County. Hutchinson and Fitzgerald are represented by attorney Richard Grasso, who also successfully represented Lourdes Ramirez in her lawsuit against a mega-hotel on Siesta Key.
A lower court upheld the County's decison to approve the 5,000 homes. Fitzgerald and Hutchinson have appealed, and that hearing will take place on January 21, 2025.
