Hello, and welcome back to The Evermore Podcast: An Exploration of Baltimore’s Art, History, and Forgotten Lore.

This week, we’re visiting a mural whose artist is also a mystery… but its message is loud and clear!

I can’t remember exactly why I was in the city the day that I noticed the ghostly “Vote Against Prohibition” mural on the side of a brick building in Fell’s Point. I imagine I was sitting at a red light and quickly stopped to snap a picture.

Today, I have summoned the image forward, and we will be heading back to the 1920s to get a better understanding of what prohibition meant for Baltimore and, in particular, what it meant for The Joseph Kavanagh Company and its family. Theirs is a family business that has been weathering the storms of the city since 1886, and perhaps one of their most interesting storms was that of the Prohibition Era. Fortunately, the reigning Joseph Kavanagh agreed to share his story with us today!

So come join us! We’ll be talking about prohibition and the city of Baltimore during the 1920s, how a family of metal-workers became bootleggers to keep their family and business afloat and remind you about the time the government wasn’t held responsible for poisoning and killing 10,000 people.
