Today the focus is saying no. This is a difficult one for me to cover. I am TERRIBLE at saying no. I am getting better, but it has taken a lot of work and reflection to get to the point where I can say no more often. I know where you are, you feel like you are letting people down. Friends, coworkers, loved ones, kids, whoever…you are letting them down by saying no. What I have learned over the years through painful failures is that I want to help so much that I tend to overcommit. Which means that I way over my bandwidth, which tends to lead to failure and there is no worse feeling than failing people you care about. The best advice I can give is to remember the value you bring to the table, that value decreases when you overcommit because something is going to suffer whether it’s quality, timeline or relationships…or all of the above. Be honest, be upfront and offer other solutions outside of you doing it. It’s not easy, but it’s really important.
