Today I wanted to talk briefly about transitioning from an individual contributor to a leader. It’s not an easy transition to make. There are preconceived notions of what a leader does, often they are over simplified, over complicated or dismissed entirely. The main thing to know is that leaders, managers, whatever are doing a lot of things, they just aren’t always tangible.
That is probably the biggest issue for someone transitioning from a solid individual contributor to a leader…output. More specifically the types of output. As an individual most of your work is fixed and you more often than not produce something. As a leader, your output can be less tangible, more strategic, more bigger picture which leaves those transitioning feeling like they are bad leaders. They simply aren’t producing as much as they used to.
With that, I have come up with three simple things to do in order to make your transition go smoothly. The first is to write down the things you have done today, this week or this month for others. Two is to go easy on yourself, it’s really easy to beat yourself up for not producing more, the reality is, you are doing a lot. The third and final is give it time, keep pushing for 3-4 months before you make up your mind, you will feel like you know what the role involves and will feel like you are contributing.
