Five relationships define who we are. Who are you? Who we are impacts everything from the opportunities that open to us, to the people we connect with, loan criteria, job offers, and more. Thank you coming to the conversation today! In this episode, Kevin Baker unpacks what respect is, and how respect and disrespect define a person.
- Respect for persons may perhaps be the most fundamental principle in all of ethics.
- Respect calls on each and every one of us to respect the intrinsic dignity of all other people.
- We live in times of great disrespect because leaders and influencers in societies are using the notion of respect as a weapon for control and domination.
- By saying “I approve (or disapprove) of you and what you are doing,” we take on the role of the judge. In so doing, we imply “if you want my respect you must behave consistent with my standards.”
- If we are going to overcome family conflict, racism, hatred, workplace conflict, discrimination, and war, we must build a new culture of respect and civility.
Respect we can truly know who we are in our relationship to ourselves and others.

When people ask you who you are, what do you say? I am best known in my relationships. This series is inspired by Jim Selman’s work on the five relationships:
—My relationship to myself and the voice inside.
—My relationships with others.
—My relationship to time.
—My relationship to my circumstances.
-My relationship to what is outside my understanding—God, the universe, the unknown, the mystery.
