It is the first Friday of June and we are officially into National Homeownership Month! Today, we revisit some of the key reasons we have discussed in the past as to why homeownership should be at the top of everyone’s priority list! TALKING POINTS (3-5):

• What is National Homeownership Month?
• Why do I want to own a home?
  • You are your own boss when you own your own home!
    • You can make the design choices you wish
    • You can renovate as you see fit (plus, you can hire who you want to do the work)!
    • You control how many pets you own (within reason) and don’t pay extra for it!
    • As long as you don’t live in an HOA!
  • You own it, so you don’t have to worry about it being sold out from underneath you!
• Discuss the financial benefits of owning a home!
  • Equity
  • Appreciation
  • Helps to build your net worth
    • When you sell your home, you get to keep the net proceeds and if you own your home free and clear, that is a great deal of money coming back to you at closing!
• There are tax benefits to owning your own home!
• Your mortgage doesn’t increase at the rate your rent amount does!
  • This is especially important for retired people! The goal is to go into retirement with no mortgage payment, but if you do, your increases will be much lower (i.e. higher taxes and insurance costs) than if you rent!
