Treasurer candidate says pension system "crowding out other priorities"
Manage episode 459908595 series 3635730
This week's episode of the SEANC View Podcast focuses primarily on the State Treasurer's race, which is one of the most important to state employees and retirees. SEANC sponsored a debate between the candidates seeking to replace Dale Folwell — Brad Briner and EMPAC-endorsed Rep. Wesley Harris — in conjunction with the Institute of Political Leadership, which aired on Sunday on Spectrum News.
In the debate, Briner, a personal investment manager, repeated a false claim that the pension system costs 16% of the overall state budget, which is more than three times what it actually costs. Executive Director Ardis Watkins points out in this episode that this inaccuracy makes it seem like our retirees are a huge burden to the state, which is untrue. Briner even said the pension system is "crowding out so many other priorities of the state."
We also discuss the ongoing Hurricane Helene relief and recovery effort, highlighting the amazing work of state employees and our favorite fall traditions.
