325. Parenting Principles: Teaching Our Children to Share
Manage episode 450133644 series 2838097
Welcome back to the kitchen table! Bethany is sharing a parent principle that every parent battles: sharing. If you’ve ever watched your kids argue over toys, you know how challenging this can be. But the reality is, selfishness is bound to show up in your house. And honestly, it shouldn’t surprise us.
As parents, we’re guiding little ones who are just learning what it means to walk with Jesus. They are new to this journey, and we have the privilege of teaching them how to be generous.
In 1 Corinthians 10:24, Paul reminds us, “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” Similarly, Philippians 2 teaches us to put others' needs before our own, while 1 Corinthians 13 calls us to love selflessly. These verses set the stage for how we can approach the concept of sharing with our kids.
So how do we handle it when selfishness rears its head over toys and playtime? Instead of forcing the issue, focus on teaching them to consider the interests of others. When a child chooses to join another’s play willingly, we see generous sharing in action. It’s a choice, not a demand.
Sharing is a tough concept for kids to grasp, but by guiding them with principles from the Gospel, we can help them learn what it looks like to put others first. And in the process, we’re shaping hearts to be more like Jesus.
