Social media with an estimated 3.5 billion users worldwide has become a major influencer in today’s global culture. The social networking platforms are filled with people presenting themselves in their altered and/or enhanced light, thereby creating false impressions which might cause some to have a negative body image and low self esteem. Body shaming is rampant and image issues, which affect women more than men, are further heightened. In the glossy world of media, poor body image and eating disorders are enforced by certain cultures and societal standards of beauty have had a detrimental effect on people’s mental health and well-being. Self-esteem and self-confidence largely depends on how you perceive yourself, how others view you and how you think others perceive you. You literally have to think about the whole umbrella of causes when talking about body image.
