Karin Avila is US-born but has been living in the province of Valencia on Spain’s east coast for the past couple of years. While she was unaffected by the floods that raced through parts of her province, killing more than 200 people, she is aware friom friends and neighbours that almost everyone knows someone who has lost their home, their car, their business or their life as the flood waters carried away everything in their path. But what has happened since. Graeme Kemlo spoke with Karin overnight to get the latest. At the weekend Karin said about 100,000 protesters marched to the centre of Valencia to demand the resignation of Carlos Mazon over the government's inadequate response. In a subsequent update Karin wrote: With emotions from dismay to optimism, Valencia continues to recover from devastating floods. While many areas, like Catarroja, still face challenges, the city centre is operational, including the fast train to Madrid. Cultural spots, restaurants and shops welcome visitors, and Albufera’s famous paella rice fields are partially open. Recent protests, drawing tens of thousands, highlight the community’s determination to hold the government accountable and rebuild. At the same time, Valencia’s marathon brought together 35,000 participants, showcasing the city’s resilience and providing a much-needed boost to the local economy. Travellers are welcome to enjoy the city and should remain aware of ongoing recovery efforts. Photo crecit Jose Anngel,X
