JO THWAITES has been in London for over 40 years. Jo was born in Forfar and brought up in Aberdeen in the north of Scotland. She studied at Edinburgh University, spent six months in Australia before landing in London in the 1970s. She considers London home.

Jo was keen to support many activist causes in London. She is a stalwart supporter of the Labour Party. She worked for Islington Council and studied Building Surveying part-time. She joined Historic Royal Palaces and was involved in key projects at all six palaces under HRP's remit. She was awarded an MBE for her outstanding contribution towards the Kew Palace project involving an extensive restoration and conservation project spanning several years after which time the Palace is now open to the public once more.

Jo has experienced London through many good times and bad, and these are her reflections on living in this amazing city with its wealth of architecture and cultural heritage from the Victorian sewer systems to the new and much talked about sculpture recently unveiled in Newington Green. Created by British sculptor Maggi Hambling, the statue commemorates Mary Wollstonecraft - considered by many to be the Mother of feminism; writer and philosopher. If you are in London, go take a look and decide for yourself what you think about it.
