The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a German political foundation affiliated with the Green political movement that developed worldwide as a response to traditional politics. Our Middle East – Beirut Office works to promote the foundation’s Green values in the region by working closely with local partner organizations and individuals in all of Lebanon, Syria and Iraq for the creation of a socially just living environment. Our namesake, the writer and Nobel Prize laureate Heinrich Böll, personifies the values we stand for: defending freedoms and human rights, promoting civic courage and tolerance, facilitating engagement and open debates, and the valuation of art and culture as independent spheres for thought and action. As such, our work focuses on environmental rights and access to public space and resources, civic engagement and political participation for the promotions of human rights and gender justice, and cross-cultural dialogue on diversity and tension in the region and on an international level. Alongside our support to partners and collaborative projects, and through a variety of tools and approaches including talks, workshops, publications, theatre and the arts, documentary film production and our yearly film festival, we seek to continuously deliver impulse for debates on the socio-political issues in the region at a time when the space for freedom of expression is further shrinking. Veranda, our newly established podcast channel is to further our goals by providing yet another platform for people in the region and beyond to access more stories coming from the margins and engage in relevant and wider discussions about the developments from the comfort of their own space.
