Say Anything’s Is A Real Boy… showcases the talent of then 19-year old Max Bemis as all instruments on the record, with the exception of drums, were written and played by Bemis himself. The pressure that Bemis felt during the creation of Is A Real Boy… culminated in a mental breakdown which in hindsight comes as little surprise to somebody whose ambition was to outdo Andy Warhol and Jesus. The product was ultimately one of the scene’s greatest albums, a masterpiece that sounds like little else from the genre. Is A Real Boy… would go on to be named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time.
