Understanding Unconscious Bias in Healthcare

Target Audience This activity is targeted toward all physician specialties. Statement of Need Providers are not consistently aware of the impact of unconscious bias as it contributes to health disparities in patient care that can affect overall patient care and outcomes. For providers to understand how to address unconscious bias, they need an understanding of the role of implicit biases in disparities in healthcare. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
- Define conscious and unconscious bias in healthcare.
- Discuss how unconscious bias affects patient diagnostics and outcomes.
- Identify barriers that diverse patient populations may encounter in the healthcare setting.
- Outline strategies to create an accountable and open space in the healthcare setting.
