In today’s episode of Embracing Your Season, Paige shares an interview from her recent trip to AACC (American Association of Christian Counselors) in Dallas, TX with Dr. Shannae Anderson. Dr. Shannae is a licensed clinical psychologist and is currently the Clinical Director at Monarch Recovery Intensive Outpatient Program in Ventura, California, and Director of Psychology and Co-Director of Ethics and Advocacy at the American Association of Christian Counselors. Paige and Dr. Shannae discuss the markers that can point to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), how attachment disorders in infancy and childhood can indicate a future diagnosis, and, ultimately, how God has designed our brain to rewire itself and heal with professional guidance and healthy relationships. Paige’s Takeaways We can still heal from a poor attachment from childhood This does require other people: professionally trained counselors or wise individuals who have navigated this on their own successfully. Let others speak into you to help you grow and heal. It’s okay to make mistakes - but repair is necessary As parents, mistakes will happen! The important thing is how we resolve the mistake with our kids. Go to them. Apologize (be specific), assure them that you will work to make sure it doesn’t happen again, and ask for forgiveness. Communicate clearly: Let your yes be yes, and your no be no When navigating relationships with someone difficult/toxic, etc., mean what you say! Whatever boundaries you make with this individual, stand firm. The more consistent you are with keeping your word, the better for your relationship. Doing this also models to your children how to stick to their word and stand their ground as they navigate their own relationships and convictions. Paige’s Takeaways During different seasons, certain things deserve a no, (even if they’re good things). Filter and focus! If it’s not part of the vision, filter it out. Your child needs time to REST and CREATE. Take a brain break! Physically remove yourself from your task to reset your brain. Move your body! Stretch, do jumping jacks, run stairs, etc. Teach your child to recognize their body cues. Kid have the wiggles? Let them know they can get up and dance, move around, and reset their body. Teach them how to advocate for this need, especially in a school setting. E.g. We like our “spiritual forces of evil” to be metaphorical rather than literal. Brooke currently serves as the Clinical Director of the Counselor Education Program at Purdue University-Fort Wayne and is a wife and mother of 4 young children - so she knows what she’s talking about! Paige’s Takeaways Having firm boundaries is actually loving people well When you have love for yourself as well as love for the individual, you can instill a very rigid boundary of what is right and what is wrong - and that is healthy! You are NOT responsible for fixing them You are not and cannot be the source of their change. You can be a catalyst but change only comes from the desire of the individual and the power of the Holy Spirit. If you’re in an unhealthy relationship (family, friendship, marriage, etc.), at some point you have to grieve that they aren’t what you want or what you need. When you realize that these unhealthy relationships are not what God designed, you need the time to grieve. By taking the time to mourn, process, and heal ourselves, we are better equipped to handle the relationship (or to end it) moving forward. Biblical literacy is so important! When you dig into your own Bible, when you do the study, ask God for guidance, and seek mentorship from someone you trust, you are less likely to be emotionally manipulated by someone taking scripture out of context for their gain. When we pause and remind ourselves that our spouse is our partner, our teammate, and someone we specifically chose - that can help reset the perspective of our spouse. Instead of jumping to assumptions we can ask questions, find out what’s really going on, and find ways to authentically connect. Build trust back. When we make a mistake, how can we build back trust with our spouse? We can model self-awareness. When we can take responsibility when we’ve annoyed, angered, or disappointed our spouse, we apologize, ask for forgiveness, and ask, what do you need from me? Jenny shares how Christians are/can be intimated by the idea of theology when in reality, it simply means the study of God. This is a practice available to anyone with a curiosity or desire to deepen their understanding of God and should not be feared! When we humble ourselves and admit that we do not know everything about who He is, we can learn, grow, and model a life of truth-seeking to our children, families, and friends. By this example, we invite our children into a real, thriving relationship with a God who is big enough to handle any question or doubt they may have. Takeaways: How can we disciple within our home? By taking each moment at a time that becomes a teachable moment! Call out when you see Jesus in them. Maybe it's an exuberant joy, maybe it’s patience and kindness with siblings - whatever it is, make sure you are speaking LIFE and TRUTH over your kids. Who has my alliance and who am I partnering with? We all have an alliance with something. In this world, we are all being discipled by something. If we aren’t intentional about our values, character, or definitions of success, we allow other things to speak into that. When we have a firm biblical view, when we want to be like Jesus, that will be a driving force behind how we shape our lives Make sure the people that you are surrounding yourself with are truth speakers and truth seekers. When you have Truth Speakers in your life, they will call you out in love, calling you to be better and holding you to a higher standard. They encourage our maturation in our walk with Christ. When you have a Truth Seeker in your life, their walk with God and pursuit of truth naturally push you to do the same. We should seek out friendships that push us to be more like Jesus.
