Are You (Still) Ready For W.O.R.?: Without Reservations: Native Hip Hop and Identity in the Music of W.O.R. by Alan Lechusza Ph.D. The 1960s in America brought to light the importance of Civil Rights. The 1970s drew into focus issues of tribal rights, equity, and justice through the Red Power Movement. It was at this turning point in American Indian history that a discourse of sovereignty and tribal self-determination gained national and worldwide visibility. This same era ushered in the foundations of the Hip Hop movement. Native Peoples living in the urban centers were exposed to this expressive complex and utilized the embedded resistant nature of Hip Hop. The 1980s brought forth a critical Native Hip Hop voice that spoke across lines of socio-political demarcation. This work focuses on the Native Hip Hop group, WithOut Rezervation (W.O.R.) and their use of the cultural signifiers and Elements of Hip Hop. A critical reading of selected works by W.O.R. reveals new epistemological discourse models and the ideological flexibility of Native identity. Hip Hop’s vernacular and expressive elements are deconstructed and narrated from a contemporary Native perspective. This updated edition of the original 2009 research includes BONUS TRACKS that illustrate the progress movement of a Native Hip Hop canon. The added analysis reviews the original scholarship to see how those early Native critical theories have evolved for a Native-centered artistic expression. This updated edition argues for socio-linguistic pedagogical theories that articulate the dynamics of tribal sovereignty and self-determination. Elephants, the Grass and A Teacher: Recollections and Reflections on the Nigeria/Biafra War by Chinyere E. Egbe This book is a captivating rendition of Dr. Egbe's personal and family experiences during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). The book will equally go down as an audacious contribution to the historiography of the Nigerian civil war. Not to mention a crash program in military history. Here, his detailed rebuttal of Brigadier Alabi's claim that the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage was the first time elephants were used in battle, comes to mind. Dr. Egbe presents several harrowing experiences and close calls with annihilation of his family. For example, after Dr. Egbe's siblings and their mother were tied up to be executed by Nigerian soldiers in May 1969, one of the soldiers discovered a photograph in which their dad was pictured with the battalion commander who had sent them to arrest the family. Dr. Egbe concludes that the leaders of Nigeria and Biafra learned little or no lessons from the tragedy. Dr. Chinyere Emmanuel Egbe is an economist and currently a tenured full professor of Business at Medgar Evers College (CUNY), where he has taught business statistics and finance since 1989. Dr. Egbe is also a Consortial faculty at the City University School of Professional Studies (SPS). At CUNY SPS, Dr. Egbe teaches Business Mathematics and also provides leadership in curriculum development.During his tenure at Medgar Evers College, Dr. Egbe held various positions. Math Is Wonderful by Fred Hardwicke MD This mathematics book is organized and useful. It departs from the usual pragmatic avenues of math and explores math topics that are only lightly touched on in school. It is a readable and somewhat humorous account that leads readers into a new sense of wonder about the mathematical world that is only a few calculations away. It is appropriate for both high school and college students, and it is an enjoyable read for those who haven't been to school in decades as well. Fred Hardwicke taught medicine, hematology, oncology, and a little bit of math for 21 years in Lubbock, Texas at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He was honored with the Internal Medicine Teacher of the Year award in 2004. Now he continues his work in cancer medicine in a unique rural setting. He currently lives with his wife, Beth, in Childress.
