Celebrating Juneteenth
Manage episode 296191781 series 2816013
Did you celebrate Juneteenth this year? What about previous years? What did you do to celebrate? How will that change in the future? The Docs discuss new possibilities for celebrating Juneteenth now that the holiday will be a 3-day weekend in the future. The Docs brainstorm heritage sites they and their families could visit to enrich their understanding of Black history.
Juneteenth - also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Black Independence Day - is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday and the first to obtain legal observance as a federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983. This has been controversial for many different reasons - the Docs weigh in with their own reactions.
